So far I've had a terrible experience dealing with this company. I've placed two orders for a marine diagnostic unit and both, they canceled on me. They stated it was because i was having it shipped somewhere other than my billing address, which can't be that uncommon. And i get that is a common fraud flag. In response to your dissertation, Loren H., apparently you did not reply with all of your facts. First, have you seen your ratings on Yelp? Your bad reviews equal your good reviews. That alone tells the public something. It appears that positive reviews are being posted to counter the real negative experiences customers have had. That's how it looks from the outside. Let's go back to the beginning. In the spring of 2021 I first inquired about a 302 long block. I was told I would be placed on a waiting list because you had to find a 302 block and none were in stock. Two months later I called to check on the status and was told you were still waiting for a block. About another month later I called again and was told the order had been lost and that we would have to submit another one. At that point we were already past half of the fishing season here in New Jersey. Salt water season. I decided to pass because the delay had already left a bad taste. Spring of 2022 I placed the order again. Once again I was told I had to wait for a block to become available. That raised a question for me. Do you not specialize in 302 engines? These engines were widely used in boats in the 1970s and some into the 1980s. They are not exactly rare in the marine world. So it makes me wonder how your machine shop treats these older engines when they come through. What level of care and attention is actually given to them? About a month and a half later I called again and was told the engine was being built. Great. Eventually I received the engine. If you actually looked at your notes referenced in your dissertation, you would see that when I installed the engine everything on that boat was brand new. The stern drive water pickup pump was new. The circulating pump on the engine was new. The fuel pump was new. Intake manifold new. Risers and exhaust elbows new. Water hoses new. Everything was new. On the first startup the engine was completely out of balance. I spoke with Zach about it. We did not discuss timing at first. We discussed the possibility that the flywheel did not match the crankshaft. We went through all the possible causes of an imbalance. I made it clear that I am more than capable in my field of mechanics. It turned out the flywheel was the wrong one. That was an easy fix for me. I have owned this boat for 30 years. I have rebuilt it once before. New transom, completely rebuilt and overbuilt engine compartment, new fuel tank, new console, new T-top, and the entire boat rewired. I know this boat inside and out and could take it apart and put it back together blindfolded. The engine break-in went fine that fall. I ran two or three short days on the water, probably around 15 hours total. In the 2023 season I was able to run the boat five or six times. My fishing is primarily in the fall for striped bass. I run a landscape maintenance business, so early season boating is not something I have much time for. In 2024, on the second day out, I finally felt confident enough to run offshore about 25 miles to the Monster Ledge for mahi and tuna. Just after breaking out of the inlet the exhaust blew out on one side. With new risers and pumps installed, the question immediately became why it was running so hot. I checked the water flow, confirmed the risers were clear, and verified water was flowing properly. I replaced the hose and continued, but I constantly had to watch that side of the engine. I ran the boat maybe five or six times that season, but at that point I did not feel confident in the engine at all. For a $3,300 rebuild from a national company, it should have been reliable. In 2025 I ran the boat four times. By then the engine was running very rough. Oil smoke was coming out of the valve covers and oil was all over the engine compartment, which by the way had just been freshly painted. At that point I performed a compression test. You have those results. The spark plugs appear corroded because the boat operates in a saltwater environment. The ignition system is not old. It has a brand new Mallory Unilite distributor, new wires, and the plugs were new at the time of installation. Another issue I never mentioned before: the engine would not exceed 3300 RPM. It should peak closer to 4000 RPM. The tachometer is brand new as well, and the boat has completely new wiring throughout. My conclusion is that this engine was pushed through your shop so you could move on to engines you actually care about rebuilding. Based on the wet and dry compression results, it appears the valve job was incorrect and the valves were not seating properly. That would also explain the overheating issues. As for response time, it took more than two months for anyone to contact me. I finally received a call on the 29th. I believe it was the day after Christmas. I was honestly surprised to even receive a call at that point. I was told that from November until that date the paperwork had just reached someone's desk. More to say not enough room. read more

First of all, I have had boats my entire life and know it is an expensive hobby. I needed to repower my boat - 800+hrs on old engine, long life! I bought a carbed 5.7L complete engine for my I/O 24' boat in 2022. I had a professional marine mechanic install it. She started up and purred like a kitten. I was stoked. Then had a 10 hr break in period which I followed instructions meticulously and all went well. At about the 12 hour mark, we heard a terrible rattle coming from the transom...after several hours of troubleshooting, had to yank the engine and found that the bolts holding the fly-wheel had not been torqued during production and the shear pins broke and the fly-wheel was loose causing the rattle. Dangerous! Submitted a warranty claim and MM paid out but I lost 6 weeks of prime boating season chasing this problem. Then,...I could never get the carb and timing spot on, called MM and after a lot of discussion, it was discovered they put the wrong carburetor on during production, so they sent me a new carb, this time the correct one but they didn't pay for the time spent trying to diagnose the issue, only paid for 1 HR shop time of $85 which is $40 less than standard marine mechanic hourly rate of $125 in FL. Then,..Starter failed at 15 hrs, Alternator and relays failed at about 17 Hrs, Fuel pump failed at 20 hrs. all replaced by MM but again came up short in paying for shop time for FL mechanic rates. Several more weeks lost during boating season too then winterized and stored for the winter. 2023: Beginning of boating season and did the initial start up and it ran! Phew! Then after first outting of 2023, the engine would not start. Ugh, here we go again. Ended up being a failed Hobbs switch that tells the fuel pump there is compression and to start fueling the carb for ignition. Guess what!?? MM used a Hobbs switch during production that was recalled and no longer made. Never received a bulletin on that. They sent me a new one that is a different style and had to be wired way differently that the diagram they sent me. Lost time and still short on the reimbursement $$/time I spent for a mechanic to troubleshoot and diagnose/repair. Summary at 42 engine hrs: The block is fine,..but every accessory part on the engine has failed so far except the coil and water pump (not yet). Boat is now for sale and will soon be someone else's bullet to the head. I do not recommend MM based on my frustrating experience and a lemon for an engine. Also, expect to pester them for a call back or follow up from warranty dept. read more

Lets just start by saying i wouldn't buy a gasket from this company let alone another engine ever again. I ordered two reman 5.7 mercruisers from michigan motorz in 2022 costing me just over 7k. I put the motors in 2023 and they ran flawless, came up on my 10hr oil change mark right before winter so we decided to just change in spring.. Fast forward to spring of 2024 i go to start the engine and port engine (standard rotation) was hydra- locked. Come to find out that one bank the head was cracked and on the other bank the head gasket had popped filling all cylinders with coolant. I just picked up two remanufactured heads from a performance shop and they said that the heads from MM were just poorly done. The one head had a valley in the middle when sighted with a straight edge.. Steer Clear of this company!! read more

Engine that was ordered had a major malfunction and our shop had to pay for their labor to fix the mistake and we had to find another engine from another company. This is a great value. I bought a long block marine 5.7. It came with all of the tin with the exception of the valve covers, all of the gaskets, a new water pump, and a new harmonic balancer. It fired up the first time, and has been running flawlessly ever since. Now, why did I give them 4 stars if I was that pleased with their product? Simple, I paid for the engine, and it didn't arrive on the agreed upon date. I waited 5 days, and when I called MM, they said I hadn't paid for it. I told them I had, and when they looked it up...ok. Yes, I had paid for it. The engine hadn't even been built yet because they thought I hadn't paid for it. So, I had to wait another three weeks or more. I'd use them again in a heartbeat, but I'll keep in contact more often. read more

Ive used a few different motor suppliers over the years but just recently gave MM a try. First thing I noticed was how the engines I recieved stood out from the rest. Even the reman motor could have passed for new. They were cleaner, the paint job was hands down better than the compettition and everything was machined and assembled with care. they came with new parts I wasnt used to getting with a reman like circ pump, balancer, timing chain cover etc. Michigan Motorz communicates via text if desired (something I like) and their responses to my questions and needs are quick and thorough. I went to MM after seeing them selling long blocks on eBay. Turns out even though the long blocks are listed as 'in stock' and ready to ship that there's actually a 3-4 week wait. So I waited. 4 weeks later a long block arrived missing some parts that were supposed to be included and including a few parts from another engine that were no good to me. The 'complete gasket set' wasn't - so I had to go out and buy some gaskets, and a timing chain cover and gaskets / seal kit (also supposed to be included but wasn't) The motor itself wasn't bad - could have used a little better prep - there was still RTV all over the oil pan mating surface and the 'urethane paint' they used for anti corrosion looked like it had been thrown at the engine from a distance. Upon starting the motor there was some clicking and tapping from the valvetrain. I went to MM for help, no response, emails go unanswered, phone calls go to voicemail. The core charge thing is a joke - I can't even get these people to respond. I hate writing bad reviews on companies but I've spent a few weeks trying to get MM to return a call, answer an email without any success at all. The only time they were responsive and attentive was when I had my credit card out. So here you go. 2 stars. I won't use MM again. read more

After speaking with many people, about a bad motor, I was directed to the owner. I could not explain my findings with manufacturing defects due to him talking over me, and yelling at me. So much so, my Secretary could hear him in the other room. I've had this block looked at by 2 different machine shops claiming water isn't escaping certain water passages even after the block was drained. Also found blue marker, marked on the water passages where water was holding. I also had my technician, now retired, called in, and asked him, how he winterized my step mothers boat best to his memory. He drained all passages thoroughly. Than started and blew out any remnants in the exhaust. Lowered the lower unit into a tub of starbrite winter safe -100 degree marine antifreeze. Ran the motor until well after the thermostat opened up. Now "Roger" the owner is claiming my company didn't winterized the boat correctly. And will not listen to the passages holding water, talking over me and hanging up on me twice now. Wants me to get a lawyer. After speaking to other people at his business about winterizing, they all have different methods. My company has been winterizing boats for years and not once did this happen until now. after reading reviews from this company, it's clear this business doesn't care about the consumer or other small businesses. read more

if anybody wants to hear a positive review out of a negative situation I Bob the sea urchin diver in California I'm here to detest that Michigan motors truly stands by their warranty, unfortunately you might not get your phone call answered immediately but can you please understand how many motors they put out and how many people they have to communicate and all the moving parts so give them a break I really did not want to but after further study I am absolutely certain they care what they do I received a 454 Big block and within the first 9 minutes A rod knock developed after all the work and consideration of hopefully having a good running motor but without in mind I called them and they said ship me the entire motor so I pulled it that night out of the vessel created the entire thing shipped it off of course them giving me a free label and received the motor Clayton and the crew got on it and free oiled the motor for me making sure I received a good running viable motor to perform its duty I have just put a hundred and one hours on the motor have changed the oil every 20 hours relentlessly making sure that this thing last the remainder of my season so thank you so much Michigan motors and everybody out there that has anything bad to say should look down deep knowing that they are getting a quality motor and thank you so much for standing behind your product it really was trying during the process read more

This operation is a joke. First I order a part on a Monday. Had not heard anything from them so I call on Thursday. First I talk to two different guys who could have cared less to help me. Then I got transferred to a girl who was very sweet and helpful. She gave me the tracking number for my order and said it would be there by end of day Friday. So I was able to get Saturday off to install my part and be on the water Sunday. I get home from work Friday and no part. I find the tracking number she gave me, look it up and it is a tracking number for a part that went to San Antonia, Texas. I live in Reno, NV. I call them and they return my phone call on Monday and give me another tracking number....... this time I looked it up and it was the correct address. I take Thursday off to install my part that is coming in on wed........ only to open the box and see that it isn't my part. I'm actually not sure what it is. Then I go onto their website to cross reference the part number on the packing slip with the part number on their website and wouldn't you know, they don't sell my part anymore! So now I have taken two days off, still not going to be on the water, have a useless part and I'm out $283. At the moment. Do not buy from them. They just want to take your money and then they don't care to help from there on. They took my money for a part they don't even sell anymore and sent me some useless crap. read more

It's unfortunate that with so many people giving Michigan Motorz good reviews, I had to be one of the people who got screwed. I bought a Volvo Penta power steering ram from them. It was supposed to be brand new. It was about a $600 dollar part. I installed the ram and still had a power steering leak. I spent the whole summer trying to figure out the leak (because who would think that a brand new part would leak?). Finally I gave up and at the start of the next boating season I took my boat into a shop I trust. They called me right away...guess what? The power steering ram was leaking! So, I paid about $1600 to have a new ram installed (expensive yes, but on my boat it is a miserable job). I contacted Michigan Motorz, they said send them the receipt and details of the purchase and they would look into it. I emailed the info and Ethan said he would look into it. A month went by with no word so I emailed Ethan. He responded and said he had handed it off to "the person who handles it" but would check and get back to me. I never got a response and now my emails go unanswered. I have the receipts and the email to back up my account of what happened. So go ahead and do business at your own risk, perhaps everything will go smoothly for you but just know that if you do have a problem you're most likely screwed. Very disappointing. read more

This whole expensive disaster started in February of 2014. I had used Michigan Motorz a few times before and thought they were a good solid company that stood behind the products they sold. I have a 33 foot Sea Ray with twin 7.4 Horizon Mercruisers. The boat has only 600 hours on it and has been professionally maintained its entire life. It was time to change out the manifolds and risers so ordered 2 full sets of HGE aluminum manifolds and risers as a set from Michigan Motorz. The kit came with bolts and gaskets. My boat is kept in the Connecticut River near Hartford so it was not going to be run in salt water. I had the manifolds and risers professionally installed and were happy that now the boat was about 100 pounds lighter and the manifolds put off less heat. Then the trouble started. In November of 2015 I was putting the boat up for the winter and was shocked when I drained the oil on the starboard engine. It was cloudy and light colored. I knew what that meant and immediately had the mechanics check out the engine. After a few days the report came back, the manifold on the port side had failed due to deterioration and it appears the starboard side was also starting to fail. I had them pull the manifolds from the Port engine, same deterioration in the same place. I called Michigan Motors and explained the issue and the findings. They asked that both sets of manifolds and risers be sent to them so they could send them back to HGE for analyses and they would get back to me. I said I would send them one set as it seemed suspect they would need both sets. At this point I was getting worried. I sent the first set to them and they said they must have the second set before going ahead. I reluctantly sent them the second set. At this point I received the report of the damage to the boat. Both heads on the starboard engine were damaged badly by water intrusion and the port was starting to go. I had the marina write a complete report on the condition of the engines including past service etc. I was not getting much feedback from Michigan Motors at this time and started to get frustrated. It took threatening them with a lawyer to even get a response form the owner "Phil" . I made sure most of our correspondence was via email so I would have a record. Phil assured me they would help me out and they were just awaiting the report from HGE. After a few conversations I felt a little better. In the mean time I asked the mechanics at my marina what the cause of such a manifold failure might be. They said it appeared to be a combination of poor casting and electrolysis. I kept wondering how this could be. The manifolds were installed using the bolts and the gaskets that Michigan Motors sent. The engines are in 100% working order and have not had any issues. Then I got a huge shock, the response from Phil at Michigan Motors: "All of the 9011A and 4354A HGE Exhaust manifolds have been Inspected and check by the manufacture HGE. They have determined that there is no Issue with the casting. They are declining the warranty claim. There are many reasons for water intruded into the engine. One of the reasons may be due to improper riser installation or the bolts was not re-torqued after initial startup of the engine. They notice there are severe electrolysis corrosion at the exhaust ports of the manifolds. It suggests that electrical system of the engine was not grounded properly." This is simply not the case I told Phil and now the estimates on the damage and repairs were climbing into thousands of dollars. Only the manifolds had a deterioration issue that the rest of the engine was fine, the grounds were solid on both engines. Basically Michigan Motorz had decided not to honor their own warranty or help with the problem. I was now forced to get a lawyer involved which is in process now. I have asked repeatedly for my manifolds and risers to be returned and Michigan Motors refuses to do so and will not respond. It is my belief they know that if the manifold make it to court they will lose. I believe they knew there might be issues and sold me the parts anyway. I now have over $10,000.00 in repairs and I am sure it will be much more in lawyers if I decide to go forward. I have all of the email correspondence, marine records and reports for anyone interested. My advice to anyone thinking about buying anything from Michigan Motors is, Don't Do It. If something goes wrong they will leave you with the mess. For the quality and honestly of HGE, forget it. I am not just pissed, I have evidence and pictures. read more
