My experience was a disaster to say the least. As I walked into the salon Michael was drinking liquor with another customer... he continued to do this through out my appointment. I didn't want my hair cut but he insisted, didn't put any products on my hair after washing it, and well the pictures speak for themselves regarding the color job. I had asked for heavy highlights all over my head (which I usually get from a different salon) because my roots were growing out. It didn't end well but I did get a refund. I had moved to Charleston some time ago from another state where I had taken for granted having access to very advanced and technical stylists. After four years here in WV, I was still having trouble finding a stylist that can cut technical and fashion-forward hair. Then I met Michael. Michael looks like a combination of Edward Scissorhands with a waistcoat and some steampunk vibes going on. His energy can be described as lively and friendly and you immediately know, this guy knows what he is doing and he is an artist! He has multiple locations, and I sat in an antique barber chair on the Quarrier St. location. I had wanted a modern shag cut with a specific fringe and had a picture. He knew exactly how to make it happen and watching him cut hair is nothing short of magic! As he made his way around my head, cutting, swishing and thinning, I could tell he was sculpting something good out of something drab. ( He even had me turn my head upside down for him to balance the cut!) I have to mention he has his OWN private label hair products and they smell AMAZING. (I recommend the honey shampoo/conditioner) I couldn't be happier with my hair, and that is no easy feat as I am a picky little brat. Charleston is lucky to have him for those of us who want rock-star hair, or a precision pixie he is the guy! This man is a trained Barber/ Stylist combo, so when you find that, you better not let go. He has trained in London and LA and it shows. His haircuts feel tailored just for you. I left today feeling cute, like Joan Jett mixed with a little Carol Brady. read more

I travel for a living and visit a lot of salons across the US. Michael's Hair Studio is going on my list of top 10 salons to visit. I came in with a pretty bland, messy cut that was not very flattering. My sister's wedding is next week and although the attention will be on her (as it should be!), I wanted to look my best as well! Michael's Hair Studio is a small barber shop with a single chair...a 100-ish year old barber's chair he bought in Detroit. Very cool! The shop may be small but it's clean and comfortable, with some very cool decor. Michael is both fast and efficient. I left the cut up to him, and he softened my look and also gave me something that's easy to work with (I'm not one to spend hours on my looks). It's been a week since I got the cut and I'm able to easily style my hair myself. Not sure about you guys, but sometimes after a new cut I find out a few days later that it's more than I bargained for. Not so this time! I had a 4pm appointment. I get there early and he doesn't show up until 4:15 and there are two other people there waiting that also had a 4pm appointment....when it's a one chair salon one guy left, the other one and I stayed. He didn't even ask me what time my appointment was for, he just automatically told the other guy to have a seat. I just walked out. How do you run a business that way? First being late and then scheduling three people at the same time and forgetting about it. He didn't apologize or try to make it right. Never again read more

I have a tough head to cut. To me, it's just hair, but to Michael it's more than that. It's almost a type of art. I moved to Charleston for pharmacy school and tried him. Hopped around to a couple other places to try and quickly realized how silly that was. It's a little bit on the pricier end for a guy's hair cut, but Michael spends his time on every head of hair and goes the extra mile to make sure you leave with exactly what looks good on you. I cannot tell you how many people I have turned onto him. Men and women have vouched never to go anywhere else. I would suggest calling him to schedule you in as he is really busy, but he will work around your times. Try him once and if you aren't satisfied, I'll eat my shoe. (Not really, because then I'll only have one shoe.) I have now moved to the DC area and have yet to find a replacement for the great job he does. Michael, please consider moving out here. Best haircut I've ever had! $35 for a men's haircut is certainly worth it when you are paying for the expertise of a seasoned professional. I loved the look and feel of the place, and I enjoyed getting to know Michael while I was there. My 2-year-old son and I got our haircuts back-to-back, and Michael did an excellent job on both. My haircut took about 30 minutes and my son's was finished in slightly less time. My only suggestion is that there be a slight discount for children (maybe $25 instead of the full $35, for some incentive to bring the whole family instead of taking the kids to a chain). I will certainly be returning for another haircut if I am in the area. Thanks again! read more
