There was a display layout running by the door and it was fun to watch a Big Boy snake through the layout with a long train. Note that they don't have any wooden (Brio/Thomas) trains in stock, though they did have some O gauge Thomas train sets. Since I didn't have a list of things I needed, I was most just browsing. The owner was very pleasant as I rattled off a list of one-off items and helped me locate what I was looking for. We discussed custom runs for a bit, as well as the the future of the hobby. He clearly knew his stuff, and watching him assist some new modelers with simple, direct answers without an up-sell attached was refreshing. There is a dearth of good full-service hobby shops these days, and yet this one manages to rise above. I highly recommend it.

Long story short 5/19/23 ~7:30 pm...My wife and daughter were headed to a theatre competition in NJ. My daughter needed a couple things and went in to the store alone while my wife waited. She was accused of stealing items while in the store. The man didn't even let her get to the cash registers before he accosted her telling her he "knew she was stealing and to empty out her pockets and roll up her sleeves because she LOOKED suspicious". She showed him she didn't have anything and he was still verbally abusive. Her Mother went in and gave the man a piece of her mind. She called me sobbing. Ridiculous. Isn't it customary to let a person go through the registers before you assault them. Huge mistake on his part. We will never visit this store again. Nice job Barney Fife. Guess you and your Bimbo's up front screwed up. Thanks for ruining my daughter's trip. Bozo.

Walt's is a pretty big hobby shop, with a wide variety of stuff, including RC cars and planes,…read moreplastic models, model rockets, and lots of random supplies for making cool stuff, including paints, balsa, dowels, glues, etc. And as big as it is, there's an even bigger space out back with an RC car track, a crawler track, and even an extra meeting room. That's where Walt's really shines -- long after the posted hours, they open the space to all sorts of local hobby groups. I've been there with a rocket club in the back room, RC cars going on the track, and yet another group up front, meeting in the actual hobby shop part. The staff is super-friendly, and willing to help out and offer suggestions for whatever kind of project you want to take on. If you need hobby stuff, this is a great place to go in the Syracuse area.

Since 2003, their owner Tim has worked on my trains installing DCC (digital command control) decoders and other maintenance work. In fact, when in the beginning I would go over to his house and he would do his work there. Over the years, he has opened up several shops and the business has slowly grown. It isn't the largest of train stores, but they don't carry any of the low-end, junk stuff that will break easily. I have heard that they are moving again to Greece, which ironically will be just a mile or so from where I used to live when I was in the Rochester area.
