Unless all you want is a shampoo & large barrel curls, DON'T go to Julie. I asked for something a slight bit different, but she didn't use the right tools so it came out the same. I wasn't mad ( a little frustrated), but I left her a nice holiday tip and left. I have been going to Julie for 5 months ( she is an apprentice under Keri, the owner). 30 minutes later, I get a call from the Keri, saying Julie was in tears cuz I wasn't happy; Keri wanted me to be happy . . .but. . .I brought BAD ENERGY into the salon, so I wasn't welcome there anymore. No concern for my satisfaction; no listening to my side of the story; no " you can see a different more experienced stylist"; like. . .WHAT??? I received a haircut from Spencer last month, and was sooo pleased with the results! I have an intense anxiety of getting my haircut for fear of it turning out poorly (who doesn't fear a bad haircut amirite?). I slaved over Manchester, NH salon reviews for hours before deciding on Michael Thomas. I really had nothing to be worried about! The front desk staff made me feel right at home, and offered me a beverage. Spencer first asked me what I struggle with when it comes to hair maintenance, and really listened to what I wanted in a cut. I've had long hair my whole life, and decided to give it a significant chop. He then washed and conditioned my hair. They also massage your scalp which is really nice! I'm weird about where I part my hair, but Spencer listened to my request and followed my parting directions before beginning the cut. He's super great to talk to, and keeps the conversations light and fun. He didn't make it feel like a job interview and ask prying questions (which often happens at salons, nail place, doctors, etc.) After the cut, he gave me a fresh blowout which lasted for 2 days. I'm not from the Manchester area, and Spencer gave me a list of things to do while I'm here this summer which was incredibly thoughtful. Overall, my experience cost me $65 (including a $10 tip), and it was worth every penny. I was super, super happy with my cut and glad I went to Michael Thomas. read more

I recently came here for a drastic change- bleaching my dark brown hair to platinum. I had never done anything as far as color goes and Spencer was knowledgeable and informative along every step of the way! All of the other staff were great and friendly as well. First Impressions: Good service but overpriced First of all, this is a nice salon. It's in a lovely old building with very high ceilings, wide-planked hardwood floors...tons of character. The salon itself is clean, stylish and very open and inviting. You know that the owner and stylists take pride in working here. I called to make an appointment and spoke to someone about the different stylists and the different costs. The owner and master stylist, Keri, was ridiculously expensive. I discussed the different costs and merits of the different stylists and settled on Stephanie. I went in for a semi-permanent color and cut. Stephanie greeted me on time and brought me back to her station. We discussed what I wanted--I asked for something "different" but told her I really didn't know what that really meant. She suggested an all-over layering of my hair to give it a different shape and more movement and also suggested some changes in my color. I agreed. She did the color, and then spent a great deal of time on the cut. She was meticulous. She then blew the hair dry and styled it. It was a nice cut, but I really didn't see much different in the shape and cut of my hair. But it was still an excellent cut. What I didn't like was that she left a great deal of color in my hair. It took a week to wash out the excess color even though Stephanie took great pains to shampoo my hair thoroughly. The color treatment itself left my hair very coarse--very different from the products that my other stylist had used (PM Shines--great color, and leaves your hair shiny and silky smooth). All in all, I got a good cut and okay color. But the cost at Michael Thomas was almost DOUBLE that of the other stylist I recently tried with very little discernible difference. So, I'm going back to the first person I tried in the area (I just moved here recently); not the best stylist (I'm not into big hair), but decent cut and color. read more

I went here for the first time...just yesterday. I moved to Manchester a couple months ago and have been shopping around for the right place for me. Karen was super welcoming and the business is small and locally owned. You can feel good about going there and feel good while you're there. I'll definitely go back and I'll also tell my colleagues and friends about it. No one enjoys getting waxed, so you might as well enjoy where you get waxed. I don't normally take the time to write reviews but I thought this warranted the time to speak. First, earlier in the week I had tried a new salon in Manchester and received the haircut from hell. I came home feeling horrible. The next day I had to be out of town for the day so I had to put haircut aside. I got home last night and took a chance and called Michael Thomas to see if Jeffery could fit me in to fix the disastrous cut I had . The receptionist was so understanding and she spoke to Jeffery personally to see where they could fit me in. Jeffery fit me in this morning coming in early to work his magic and fix my hair. I walked out of the new salon feeling human again and with such gratefulness that they felt so compelled to help me out. Thank you Michael Thomas and Jeffery for a wonderful experience. This is my happy place! Beautiful, modern salon, I absolutely love it and my stylist, Brittany. She takes the time before each visit to talk about my last visit, likes and dislikes and what I want to accomplish at each appointment. When I first starting going to Michael Thomas my hair was a COMPLETE DISASTER! The color was about 5 different shades and dry from previous processing. Within 3 visits my hair is the exact color I wanted (and repeatedly asked my previous stylist for) and my hair is in a much healthier state. Checking out is just as pleasant as the rest of my visit as the receptionist there is super sweet and helpful and you can tell she really enjoys her job! I think it's important to also note that I never feel pressure to purchase the styling products they sell which is something the previous salon I went to always did, making the end of my appointments awkward and uncomfortable. I just love this place so much! First of all the salon is beautiful.. really beautiful. It has a warm and calming decor that invites you right in. So before I went here Thursday, I had NEVER colored my hair before. I went in with lots of pictures, questions and ideas of what I wanted. My hair is very dark, and I wanted a caramel balayage. The color I got was farrrr from the pictures I showed her. It is a weird blonde, orange color. (It looks like I went to CVS and tried to dye my hair with box color). That was bad enough, but on top of that, its not even balayage! It's kind of like a failed ombre look. It goes from nearly black to the blonde/orange color. Awful, awful, awful. Can't email them, there is never anyone I can speak to when I call. Over all, just a very horrible experience. I would never recommend this place. Not even to my worst enemy. read more

I recently moved to the Manchester area and was in desperate need of a trim. I looked this salon up on yelp.com and found good reviews- and a coupon along with it- so I went ahead and booked an appointment. The salon space is in an old mill building with tall,lofty ceilings. I loved the open space and atmosphere. My stylist Bethany did an excellent job at fixing my long, disjointed layers and split ends. The result was a head of hair that framed my face beautifully with nice long layers. I also got a deep conditioning treatment to help neutralize chlorine from swimming several days a week. So far I am very happy with the cut, and I would say this place is well worth it despite the prices. I'll be heading back a week or so from now to get my old highlights taken out, so I'll update you on the color then. My coloring is scheduled with Chelsea. read more

I've been coming to her for years, and although I am always beyond pleased with the work she does, she always continues to confirm that I'm happy with my brow wax. I'm a grad student that was new to the area and looking for a new salon and came across Michael Thomas Salon in my search. This is honestly the best salon I have ever been to! So far I have been here three times, twice for a hair cut and once for a brow wax. Brittany G. was my hair stylist for both haircuts and the very first appointment she spent at least 10 minutes asking me about my hair, which products I used and how I wanted me hair to look. I have VERY naturally curly hair and Brittany did a great job of cutting and styling my hair so it would not be weighed down by my curls. Never have I had a hair stylist do that great of a job. She is excellent, and has been cutting hair for nearly 10 years so she knows exactly what she's doing. Highly recommend her! Caryn V. did my brow wax and did a great job! She begins by looking in the mirror with you and asks exactly what you want and then gives her expert opinion on how she wants to shape them. They came out great, and I especially liked that she didn't go too thin, I think that is a down fall of a lot of other places I have been to. I will definitely be back! This salon is pricey, but totally worth it, I firmly believe you get what you pay for and when it comes to haircuts and waxing I definitely think everyone should splurge. My first experience at this salon was actually not mine, it was my 12 year old son's. He's had a couple of haircut nightmares...one in particular on Newbury St. that left him looking like Herman Munster. Suffice it to say he suffers from salon-stylist phobia. The staff was welcoming and attentive, the decor is modern, open, bright and comfy...leather chairs, coffee, tea, snacks and great magazines to browse while you wait. Before writing this review, I tried 3 different salon professionals to cut my hair. All three were poor even though two of the three were senior level and charged over $40 per hair cut. The issue is that the salon professionals go through the perfunctory "Hi, how do you want your hair cut?" but then they do what they want regardless of what you asked them to do. It seems to be like a manufacturing line, where you sit down, they get the shears and threat you like a sheep being sheared of its wool. They only use scissors at the end to fine tune. I could have gone to SuperCuts for 1/3rd of the price for the same haircut. What they lacked was an understanding of contemporary and classic styling, the interest in customizing a haircut to tailor the person sitting in the chair as well as they lacked pride in their work. Would I recommend anyone to visit the Michael Thomas Salon? No. Would I return for another haircut? No. read more

I walk into this salon as a Personal Trainer with my sweats,sneakers, and wind blown hair, (No make up of course) They treat me like a movie star and make me feel great about myself. The staff NEVER pushes product so you can be sure that if they offer you to look at a product it is so in your best interest.
