Writing this review unprompted as I feel there are too many physicians who are one in a million and possibly go their entire career without the recognization they deserve. Especially publicly. So here it goes: Our son had a serious fainting episode and Dr. Griffin's office was able to get us in a timely matter without any administrative problems. His front desk staff were warm and accommodating. Dr. Griffin performed the echo himself. Unheard of! (I get regular echocardiograms done by technicians which then get *reviewed* by a physician *later*.) His bedside manner was calming, unassuming and put a worried and frazzled parent to ease. Dr. Griffin spent nearly 2 hours with us going through other tests, as well as family history. Again, unheard of! The time he spent with us was thorough and detailed, I felt like a load had been lifted as we walked out of his clinic. Note: I am an experienced lifelong neuro/cardio patient at Stanford who can attest to numerous bad experiences. Dr. Griffin is an excellent choice for any child needing care from a cardiologist. read more

Our son is a competitive swimmer with a complicated medical history. We were recommended by his pediatrician after my son experienced chest pain during a swim meet. Dr Griffin was awesome! Very knowledgeable, thorough, and patient. He was willing to spend additional time to answer questions from us - the worrying parents, and even conducted a second EKG by himself to rule out possibilities once and for all. All of us - my wife and my son included - felt very comfortable (and encouraged) by Dr Griffin's methodology, approach, and his way of communication. Being a medical professional myself and a single parent for many years, I am very particular about my child's healthcare. Dr. Griffin is very good at what he does. From his very comprehensive assessment of my child, listening intently to MY concerns for her and what I've noticed going on with her, to his immaculate office and warm staff, his care is top notch! I even recommended him to a friend that's child has WPW, but when I did, she said the Dr. Griffin was ALREADY her child's cardiologist and she loves him! Today I received notice from a collection agency that Dr. Griffin has sent us to collections for $623.12. We have not seen or spoken to or received anything from Dr. Griffith for the past almost four years - no bills, no phone calls, nothing. Since they make you pay on the spot for every visit, the only thing this could be is for that missed appointment that we called and cancelled 22+ hours prior in 2010. I am disputing the collection and will be discussing this with the billing division of the AMA and whomever else regulates medical billing in California. This is super sad and as a professional office they should be completely embarrassed by this. read more

I would give Dr. Griffin 4 stars and not his staff. They tried to call me before the appointment that I would have to pay $700 dollars due to my deductible. They had the number wrong so I didn't to hear about the amount or the same day payment policy. I arrived at their office and was told about the $700. I had not brought my debit card linked to my FSA account. I told them I would return the same day or next and take care of it. They agreed very reluctantly. I didn't return the same day because I was looking for the card. The second day they call the number on file which was my wife's number. She gives them my phone number but instead of calling me they go ahead and bill my card without my approval. I understand they need to bill for services, but they could have a customer centric approach and have some flexibility. read more

Dr. Griffin and his whole front and back office were grand. My daughter was treated kindly and spoken to with respect. The office was pretty and decorated nicely for kids. The testing was informative and we felt like we were getting super care and most importantly her needs were being met. A lot of times Doctors do not explain very well to regular folks without PHDs in medicine. Dr. Griffin explained to us using the ultrasound monitor and with a model of a heart all we needed to know. I did read the past older review from a few years ago and it seems like the office must have listened and made changes with their staff and communication because everything was impressive. I have to agree with some previous negative review about their office people, it's not pleasant experience. My child went in for an ECHO checking, the bill is close to $3000 for an one hour visit, after insurance I have to pay $600 on my own, this is a surprise and I questioned if all check/charges are actually happened. I called the office for the bill, the lady does not want to explain each charge and simply told me this is what insurance company approved, no matter how much I need to pay it. I paid the bill but feel cold for the way they reply, I believe there is no mercy even for people cannot afford the cost, so if you do not want to see surprise and deal with the office people lately, you'd better check cost first before you go in. read more

My son was seeing Dr. Griffin for his heart condition for two years but I finally stop his appointments because dealing with his front desk has been one of my worth experience ever with a doctor's office. First, they charged me $50 for rescheduling my appointment one week before the appointment date. Second, When I challenged them about my $100.00 balance (they charged my insurance company $2K for 45 minutes of a regular check up) the lady laughed and said they don't get paid that much from the insurance company and reported me to the collection agency. Dr. Griffin himself doesn't really have a great bedside manner either. read more

We had an appointment and were not able to make it due to some family emergencies and I had requested for waving the fee and accordingly they did for the first time and unfortunately the second time I tried calling them 3rd July / 4th July (sunday & holiday) and unfortunately they are so clever they dont have an answering system and people like us who work all day in places where we dont have access to phone will endup not canceling an appointment and they take it to their advantage. My child has been a patient of Dr. Griffin for several years. We've never had a problem with the office staff, and I pay attention to such things.Dr. Griffin has a wonderful bedside manner with the kids, and you never feel rushed during the appointment. I'm surprised to see all the negative reviews here but if you read through them, many of them are disgruntled parents who are having insurance issues, cost objections, or simply a bad day -- petty complaints. These days, instead of solving small problems (like billing, or surly office staff members) by having a conversation with offending parties, people feel empowered when then can just fire off a negative yelp review and avoid confrontation of any kind. The reason for four stars is we juts don't see Dr. Griffin enough to warrant five stars, nor do I have enough experience with pediatric cardiologist to assert -- the best there is! read more

I was very nervous while I was on my way there after reading all the bad reviews. What I noticed was that most reviews have to do with insurance issues. As soon as I walked in I was greeting and they were very friendly. I had all the paper work ready to go so they were fast in getting me started. My daughter who is only 7 months old was very cooperative, and they were very gentle with her. The doctor was very nice and also was also very calm with my daughter. I paid the co-pay. He spent 30 minutes max with our son. Told us all was good (thankfully). Then billed our insurance over $3,000. They then sent a bill for $500 of the remainder. I called, let them know we had the bad luck of both of us being laid off within a month of each other, with 2 kids depending on us....anyways, they immediately sent me to collection over $500. Totally pathetic. I was willing to pay in installments, but they wouldn't accept anything but the full amount. I dont know where or when it is that Dr's loose their humanity, but this piece of crap of a human being lost it long ago. Enjoy your vacations, golfing and your mercedes...I hope losing your professional integrity is worth it. I hope messing up a decent family going through rough times helps your ego. read more

Dr. Griffin is a wonderful pediatric cardiologist. My daughter was very sick as a newborn. Dr. Griffin made last-minute appointments and got her seen at Stanford at the last minute. He helped us during a difficult time in our lives and made the process easy for us. The front office staff was always kind and courteous to me. They are professional and fair. We have been going to dr griffin for close to 9 years- since our son was born in 2003 and have had nothing but positive things to say. Dr griffin is kind, caring, well respected in his filed and patient. Too bad and sad to hear that there are so many cancellation fee issues - which we have never experienced once!!! It is understandable that a doctors office will charge for cancellations - lets be fair, they often work hospital time around office visits and v USA versa.... I would not go to another pediatric cardiologist because of the billing departments issues but instead bring it to his attention when at the appointment - he is very receptive to comments and feedback - he is a wonderful doctor and person! read more

I was ready to write about cancellation policy charge, and was shocked that many others were in the same situation as me, They can not practice this.... In fact, I canceled my appointment when they called to confirm, which they claimed missed their policy by 5 minutes time ( I wonder if they wait in their office timing your appointments) , but since they said that they called me and not I calling them, I would be charged 200 usds for late policy. They are tricky in that they said that Dr. Griffin would review the charge, and guess what, they were sneaky to charge me 6 weeks later on my visa card!! Please everyone...go to Stanford Pediatrics Cardiology.....we don't deserve this kind of treatment from Dr. Griffin office. I had a bad experience with the office staff, too. I sent in a copy of our insurance card, front and back, by mail, a month before my child's appointment. And then I called and verified that they received it. And they did. The appointment occurred and then two months later I get a nasty call and nasty email from the office saying that they believed I didn't have medical insurance and that I need to pay $495 in the next TWO HOURS or they'll send it to the collection agency. I didn't like being threatened like that, and I emailed another copy of my insurance card immediately, and they DID NOT accept it! First time in my life - with three kids and several moves so we've been to many doctors - that any doctor's office has refused to bill my insurance and sent anything to a collection agency. I work for a pharmaceutical company so we've got great insurance and this visit is completely covered under my plan. It was a real sign of disrespect and unprofessionalism for Dr. Griffin's staff to behave this way... especially since I didn't hear one word from them in the two months since the appointment. And it's maddening that I did everything ahead of time and did everything right, too, and it still came to this. I'll get this straightened out eventually but I just don't appreciate the hassle or the negativity. And, don't forget, this was their mistake! They were the ones who lost the copy of my insurance card! I agree with the other one star postings, go see another pediatric cardiologist so you don't end up dealing with staff like this. No one deserves such an unexpected and downright hostile exchange from a doctor's office. read more

I totally agree with Ed J. This office is unethical and needs to be reported to the AMA. My daughter recently had an appt. there. She had a couple of quick tests and an even quicker discussion with Dr. Sheridan. We were there less than an hour, after which my daughter was told there was nothing wrong with her. Imagine my surprise when we got a bill for nearly $1,700!!!! Who makes $1,700 an hour for a quick office visit?? We were told us to come back in a month for a follow-up. Yeah, right! read more

I'm amazed at all the bad reviews. I've seen Dr. Griffin for fetal heart scans for two pregnancies now (almost done with the current one). Visits are once a week from 16-24 weeks, and then a few more visits after that, so let's call it 16 visits total so far. I've never found the office to be less than courteous and helpful. I've been late a few times, including my most recent visit, and they've always been nice about it, telling me to focus on driving safely and not to rush. On billing, they always tell me when I come in if I have a balance, and ask if I'd like to pay it then or to make other arrangements. Maybe it's because I'm there often? I will say that virtually every specialist I see does charge for late cancellations/no shows, and you generally only get one free, so I guess even if that happened, I wouldn't be up in arms (though I do think they should change their reminder schedule if they really are penalizing people for canceling at that call - that's not fair). As far as actual medical treatment, Dr. Griffin does a great job. I like that it's actually him doing the ultrasound and the echo, not a tech and then him stopping in for two minutes. I tried Packard's Heart Center previously, and the doctor literally never even came all the way into the room. They also would not do weekly US, which is considered the standard of care for my condition. Dr. G is also great about taking a quick look at the whole baby and will say fluid looks good and he's seeing definite growth. I haven't had to deal with an actual cardiac issue with him, just screening, but I have a friend whose daughter has seen him for more complex issues, and she loves him as well. My other doctors (OB and rheumatologist) are also very confident in his skills. read more

I've been taking my daughter to Dr. Griffin for the past 3 years and I have nothing but good things to say about his practice and staff. It's a shame that people bad mouth this practice due to a billing experience and/or out of pocket expense they incurred. Dr. Griffin was highly recommended to me by an employee of Sutter Health in San Mateo who had been taking her son there for the past 10 years. So far he has been amazing treating my 14 year old daughter and I'm so happy I found him! Dr. Griffin is such a caring doctor, takes his time to explain everything making sure patient/parent understand the diagnosis and treatment plan. It is really a shame that people don't know how to value a good practice like this.........good and caring doctors are hard to find! Mean, rude, arrogant, discriminatory,inconsiderate, sneaky staff to deal with. I have been putting up with this office for 7 years, since my child was found to have a heart murmur. The front desk at not the most friendly people, zero customer service, flat affect, no friendly greetings or chats, sign, pay and sit down. They would look at you with fake smile, maybe because we r not Caucasians. They won't call to remind you for an appointment, they said it's not their obligation or requirement, then lo and behold u missed the appointment and they will call you a day after and charge you $200. Without a warning that this will be charge of the appointment is missed. We tried to negotiate, with the business of our day to day life, we sometimes forget. But they said "you should know your appointments" we beg to have it reduce or asked for an installment payment, because this amount maybe to small for them but it is big for us. They would not consider, but instead they said will increase the bill $10 every month of not paid in full. This is not the only pediatric cardiologist in the area. I would not recommend this place even to my worst enemies. Besides I am in healthcare too, we don't treat our clients like they do, and Dr Griffin is not the most impressive pediatric cardiologist anyway. read more

I met Dr. Griffin, his wife and staff nearly 8 years ago with my twin boys. My boys began seeing Dr. Griffin soon after birth when I decided I would not sit with my boys in a large hospital cardiac clinic for hours being shuffled around between residents, fellows and staff. When I met Dr. Griffin and his wife, I instantly fell in love with them and the care my boys received. If it weren't for Dr. Griffin and his wife, one of my twins may not be here today. They have stood by my side as a mother who is in tune with my children's health issues. They have ALWAYS been there for my boys and our family when dealing with serious cardiac and/or health issues. I can say without a doubt Dr. Griffins care, treatment and bedside manner is paramount. He is very attentive and thorough. As a parent, if you put your child's health first - you couldn't ask for a more highly qualified and amazing doctor!! I am appalled after reading the horrible reviews with low ratings. They are all stemming from money. I have never been charged a fee. I also have never missed an appointment in nearly 8 years or I have rescheduled way ahead of time. By canceling a child's heart appointment you are potentially risking your child's health and safety. Shame on any parent who associates money with their child's life. read more

I absolutely don't understand the negative reviews either - we've been seeing Dr. Griffin since my daughter was born and he guided us through such a scary time in our lives through her open heart surgery in 2006. Happy to say my daughter is a healthy and happy 9 year old today and certainly much of our thanks goes to Dr. Griffin and his staff. They are all very knowledgeable, very professional, and very compassionate. I would refer this office hands down to anyone who needed to see a pediatric cardiologist. They are superb. In all of our years, we had one billing issue and it was resolved quickly. The error was made by the insurance company but the office stepped in to get it all resolved. We have actually only been late to one appointment (my daughter was in school and both my husband and I thought the other was picking her up so we both showed up without her-oops). Not only was the entire staff very patient and willing to wait while we took 30 minutes to pick her up and come back, they stayed after closing to accommodate our mixup. It seems to me those giving the negative reviews never actually made it into the office because they didn't speak a word about the level of care - only about traffic, after-hours answering services, and billing. Those truly needing cardiac care for their children would never base reviews on such trivial topics. read more

Absolutely atrocious. The worst experience I have ever had at a professional's office. I had been going here for three years and had never missed an appointment. Then, after trying to cancel my appointment 23.75 hours before my appointment, they told me that I had missed the 24 hour cancellation period, and that I now owed them $300. At this ridiculous charge, I naturally wrote Dr. Griffin and asked him to rescind it. Thankfully, he did, but only if I scheduled another appointment. After the extreme rudeness and terrible, terrible treatment that I had received from his staff, of course I decided I would no longer be a patient of his, but I scheduled the appointment anyways. A few weeks later, about a month before the appointment was scheduled for, I called to cancel it, so that I could switch to a different cardiologist and wouldn't have to go back there. I spoke to an attendant who asked me my name, when my appointment was, what my reason for canceling was, etc. About a month later, I receive a call, informing me that I had missed my appointment and would now be charged $600 for both missed appointments. I informed them that I had called and cancelled it, leaving a message with their answering service who gladly took it. Then, whomever I was speaking with accused me of LYING, saying that their answering service does not take messages canceling appointments. She then said "So what, are you just not gonna come here anymore? Is that what this is?" She was inexplicably rude. I then informed her that I would not be paying the office a cent, that I had done nothing wrong and that I could get my cell phone records to PROVE that I had called and canceled my appointment a month in advance. Then I hung up, and thank GOD I never heard from them again. Please, never go here unless you want to be treated like dirt and taken to the cleaners. I've never been spoken to the way I was spoken to, or treated the way I was treated in a professional atmosphere the way that I was at Dr. Griffins. read more

I too am surprised to see negative reviews. I'm not sure about the billing and front office, but for me that wouldn't matter, because I want an excellent doctor. Dr. Griffin was professional, highly recommended by my pediatrician, took so much time to understand my son's life, and was so helpful. He included my son in all of his thoughts and listened to what was really going on, gave strong advice and truly listened. I would recommend him to anyone. As far as his wife, who is the nurse, she too is excellent. I had some concerns with my son a month prior to our appointment and she had me come in asap (it was close to closing, but she didn't care) and spent quality time with my son. She followed up with a phone call and also reassured me a few times before coming in about his condition. She was caring and professional. read more

Dr. Griffin and his staff fit our daughter in to his schedule when she got an alarming treatment plan from another cardiologist. Kim was terrific, getting my daughter's records for us when the other office wouldn't release them at my request. Dr. Griffin gave us plenty of time and calm reassurance. My husband and I brought our 9-year-old son in to see Dr. Griffin today. He and his staff were exceptional. The nurse was very warm and made our usually anxious son feel comfortable and relaxed, even getting a few smiles from him. Dr. Griffin was extremely thorough and spent a good hour with us. This was my first experience with a doctor where I didn't feel rushed; he answered any questions and explained everything in detail, putting our minds at ease. Here is our experience for the last year with that office. My baby needed an ECHO exam after birth, it was provided at hospital by the partner of Dr.Griffin's at the same office. She indicated we need to schedule an appointment after 1 month for follow up. I called to re-schedule my appointment 3 days before the appointment . The lady who answered the phone said it's no problem and there are no fees for re-scheduling only if it's within 24hrs of the appointment (after I asked her specifically). Then I received a phone call the day after telling me that they will forgive us for re-scheduling and will not charge us $200 as they were able to "sell" our appointment. I was shocked for hearing the word "sell" and that although they told us no fees for re-scheduling. I honestly didn't pay that much attention to that weird call. At my new appointment, when I arrived at the office, I was asked to fill some paperwork .Then the nurse asked for my baby with his mom to go to the exam room to get ready for the Dr. On one paper I had to provide full information for a credit card (including the 3 digit security code on the back of the card!!! As I had already paid the co-pay and they already billed my insurance before. As my Credit card info was stolen before due a similar piece of paperwork. I told the representative I am not comfortable providing this info and if there another way to solve this. The representative replied in an unacceptable way that I can't go to the appointment unless I fill the page then he called the office manager. I asked them to contact my insurance to make sure of the amount that I need to pay. I even pointed that they charged me 1month before so they can check their records of what is needed from me. The office manager bluntly indicated I either fill the required paper or get out because they need such paper to be sure I will pay any extra charges. I again indicated that I am not willing to fill such paperwork and prefer if there is another way. She decided to call the doctor to the front office. At that time the office manager entered the examination room where my baby is and said to the nurse don't start anything and to wait. They left my wife and my child half naked and left the room. After a while my wife had to come to the front desk to see what's taking so long. I waited for the doctor who came after a while and indicated that the CC paperwork is for my convenience, I said I am not continent this way and I prefer to not provide such information on a paper. He now changed the tone that they need this paper to make sure I will pay any extra charges if there was one. I again indicated that I know there are no extra charges on my side and they already billed me before at the hospital appointment so they can confirm my words. He then decided to ask the representative to call their billing manager to check their previous bill and he turned around and stepped out of the room into the backroom while I was talking to him. While waiting for their billing manager to reply, the office manager made a sarcastic comment on us which I didn't reply to. Then after another minute, she came and indicated that I must provide my and my wife's SSN and there was no discussion about that. I asked why they need such information as they already got a copy of my health insurance, in the doctor's presence she said in a load tone so they can track me down if I didn't pay my bill and that I am being Ridiculous. I replied that I don't appreciate being treated as a criminal. And I was shocked of the way that Dr Griffin didn't mind his office manager to speak that way to his patients. Even worse he decided to turn around and indicate I am abusing his staff and I should leave, I mentioned that his office manager is the one calling me "ridiculous" and I would like to reverse my co-pay charge so I can leave. I had to leave the office with my 1month old who had a sever condition. Then I received a bill for $200 for the missed appointment (the one I already rescheduled 3 days before) (although they told me twice that I will not be charged). My insurance is fighting them currently on the fake charge and they even had the nerve to provide a letter to my insurance lying bluntly in it that I refused to fill ANY paperwork or pay anything and I was abusing their staff members. From that letter I learned also why the doctor was very supportive of the office manager abusive behavior as it turned out to be his wife. Bottom line, if you were unlucky enough to see Dr. Griffin or one of his associate at the hospital, for the sake of your child, yourself and your time don't ever think of scheduling an office visit with him. You are better off going to LCPH as I did. Frankly, for a pediatric cardiologist (who sees newborns with heart conditions), a doctor or even a business, he should treat his patients with courtesy. read more

Dr. Griffin himself is a caring, thorough doctor and he himself was worth the 2-hour round trip drive to reach his office. But his office staff is aggressively and extremely rude so we have decided to see another cardiologist. They're so aggressive about creating and pursuing cancellation charges (got a reminder call 23 1/2 hours before our appointment, we asked to reschedule, they said we were inside the 24-hour window so would have to pay $300) -- sounds like a common practice here, to wait until the patient is inside that window to "remind" them and then tell them they're out of luck if they can't make it -- and when I very politely asked for mercy, as we had never ever missed an appointment or even been late, despite the long drive, and had always paid our bills on time, the man at the front desk (whose name I've forgotten) was incredibly snarky and dismissive; when I followed up with the office manager, adding what an extreme financial hardship this would be for us, she talked to me as if I were about twelve years old, admonishing me about the rules, using a parental tone to the effect of "now what would you think would happen if we let everyone do this, hmmm?" It was really enraging but I had to suck up to not be charged $300. When I hung up my heart was racing and I wanted to cry. I could not believe how I'd been treated. It was appalling. I seriously doubt Dr. Griffin has any idea how his staff treats his patients, and there's no way to reach him without going through them -- now that we no longer see him (because of his staff). read more

We saw Dr. Michael Griffin alongwith another doctor. While the front office collected our co-pay, they didn't mention anything about 2 co-pays for 2 doctors. Hence, I was a bit surprised when I received a call last week from the office of Dr. Griffin stating that his co-pay was due and I hadn't paid. I informed the lady on the line that I had already paid and when she clarified that it'll be separate, I asked her to mail me the statement. When the statement finally came in a few days, Dr. Griffin's office had already put in a Late Fee on it while I never received the statement before. my daughter was referred to by an urgent care doctor and he made the appointment for us. i would not have step foot on that office if i had read these reviews first. true enough, front desk people were not friendly and immediately asked for copay of $286.00. i told her I have HRA account and if it's not paid then bill me. they reluctantly agreed. today i got my EOB, and my copay was $760. totally drained my HRA account. i'm thinking of questioning the bill but after reading these reviews, this looks like what their office is all about $$$$$$. and of course nothing wrong with my daughter. they even wanted me to schedule for a follow up check up. I just received a $200 missed appointment fee from his office. The day of my daughters appointment i ended up in the ER with my elderly mother. They could care less about any issue other than MONEY. This man is the face and name behind one of the most unethical Doctors Offices I have ever come across. I have been a heart patient for 24 years and have gone through a litany of doctors. I have been charged missed appointment fees too, usually in the $20-$50 range. I get that they are losing money and I understand they can charge for it. BUT $200. I promptly cancelled future appointments and am actively pursuing treatment at UCSF. As far as clinical the environment at teaching schools, well you do not receive better treatment than where all the latest medical ideas are created. The sad part to it is that Drs like Michael Griffin learn their trade at teaching schools. I was unable to get their office staff to tell me their justification for such an incongruous fee. They kept referring to the number at the bottom of the bill which is a billing company. It took several minutes of bickering before they admitted that the billing company could not adjust the bill and promptly referred me back to the billing company. All I asked for was their justification for such a high fee, and after being handed off to a irritable back office dolt who kept repeating that I had to call the number at the bottom of the page he finally tells that this phone call is over. Well sweetheart it's not over. My daughter's primary care physician was taken aback by the fees and admitted that used to charge $20 but ended the policy. In today's world when you have to make difficult decisions for your family this is shear unabated larceny. do not give them a credit card number, something they "require" as this is how they get you now.
