I have never been offered a hand wax treatment, TV, and jewelry cleaning at a dentist. Would highly recommend! They are very thorough with their care, and very friendly! UPDATE: Subtracting two stars. They tried to get me to have all this porcelain work done on my teeth, which would have cost me a small fortune. Went for a second opinion elsewhere and was told I needed a filling replaced, but that cost next to nothing! These guys are very overpriced and will encourage you to do unnecessary work that ends up costing you a lot of money!

The office is well-decorated and cozy with accent walls and aesthetically-pleasing black and white photos of people with ridiculously white teeth. They have complimentary fruit and drinks (orange juice, green tea, water, etc.), free yummy chapstick, and of course your obligatory floss and toothpaste. The exam/cleaning rooms all have nice, big windows, so you can look out the window or watch TV while you are having work done, your choice. Also, you have the option of dipping your hands in a paraffin wax bath for a nice hand treatment as you get your teeth done. Absolutely genius ... I mean, if you're sitting there for an extended period of time anyway, why not? Everyone I interacted with there was very pleasant, but, most importantly, honest. Dr. Alber has a very frank, here's-how-it-is personality, which I really appreciated. He told me I should consider having my wisdom teeth out in the near future, and when I admitted that I thought I would be doing that on my next visit to Peru, he encouraged me. "Heck, they can do it for a lot cheaper than I can -- and they have good dentists!" he said. I really appreciated that because he could have said something like "Well, the only way you can be SURE to have it done well is to go through me." I loved the no-upsale approach. My visit was very cheap; with insurance, it ended up being $22, but without it would have been $110 for cleaning, xrays, and checkup. I will definitely be going back.

Update 11/11/25: I went in for a bi-annual cleaning and…read morecheck-up yesterday. Marian is still a great hygienist. Very thorough and praises me for good home dental habits. She even laughs at my jokes. This dental group in general is full of positive, encouraging folks, from the front desk, to the office folk, to the dental team. I feel like we are all working to keep my mouth, teeth, and gums in good shape. I saw Dr. Dhaliwal this time and found her thorough and knowledgeable about the condition of my teeth. We bonded over both identifying (and me remembering) a cosmetic filling I had done years back on the outside of a tooth. I tend to chat a lot, and Dr. Dhaliwal and I had a good conversation as we went over my x-rays about the state of dentistry in overall medical/health industry. Yeah. :) And I really love that I can see my x-rays and the doc can point out what they see there and any specific concerns.(or kudos!) The only negative was that I had to wait longer than anticipated to begin my exam and cleaning. My appt was at noon, and they had gotten behind. It wasn't a hardship for me because I didn't need to be anywhere right after the appointment. But, if you are squeezing a cleaning in between work, lunch or other appts, you might want to get one earlier in the day to mitigate the chance the office is behind schedule by the time your appt comes around. Update 05/05/25: I am still very pleased with my experiences at North Boulder Dental. I still see Marian and she still does a wonderful job. This time I saw Dr. Sica, who I have been seeing since I joined the practice. We discovered today that we started at the practice about the same time -- 20 mumble years ago! At today's visit, I was due for x-rays. I was concerned about having another x-ray because I'd already had 2 in the last 2 months. Dr. Sica looked at the chart Marian had just updated and said I was good to go for another 6 months. The Staff is patient-focused, knowledgeable, caring, and there to help. I believe my teeth and gums are in good shape not only because of the staff's excellent preventive and proactive care, but because they have instructed me well in how to care for my own teeth and gums. At 60+, I have been able to maintain minimal periodontal disease and to stave off gingivitis so far. That said, the Staff has also seen me through root canals, caps, and replacement fillings. The only Con is that NBD does not take insurance. They have their own dental plan, which does not save us any significant money. (Unless our teeth get worse, which we want to avoid!) Previous Review: I've been with North Boulder Dental for 24+ years. Can't recommend them highly enough! During my visit yesterday, Marian was very personable. She gave me a thorough teeth cleaning and more information about geographic tongue, which helps me deal with it. She and Dr. Kristi praised me for the excellent job I was doing, which helps me feel capable of managing oral health issues.

I went in for the initial appointment, had x-rays done, had the exam with Dr. Carter and scheduled the filling/possible root canal for the following week. When my tooth cracked over the weekend I thought, oh great now I'm going to have to have a root Canal. I called and they got me in right away. They took more x-rays and when I explained I had just had x-rays done they linked the current x-rays with the ones from the previous week so I didn't get charged! Dr. Carter was amazing! The shot didn't hurt and I was barely sore from it once the novocaine wore off oh, and he used just the right amount of novocaine so when I was leaving the office it was already starting to wear off. Why is this important? No biting of the inside of my cheek when I ate, no slurred speech for the rest of the day and no drooling which is always a bonus. After he cleaned out the cavity he said that he could see 'the shadow of the root'. He told me that he could do the root canal OR we could simply treat it as a cavity. Regardless it would have to be a crown. Ok, when does the dentist EVER give you the option to decide what you want to do? We went the cavity route and he explained that if I had any pain at any time to call and we would have to do the root canal. I didn't have any pain! NONE. It would take about 2 weeks for the crown to come in. I got a call 4 days early and they said it was in and that I could come in early if I'd like. The fitting for the crown was ridiculously seamless and easy. Dr. Carter even sanded down my retainer to fit the new tooth. All in all this had been such a positive experience which isn't the normal review for any dentist. If you have medicaid and need a dentist go to Dr., Carter!

They kept telling me it wasn't ready yet. 3) The dentist acted like it was my fault that I waited 3 weeks to get it done. 4) The dentist did not care about pain management AT ALL. I asked for numbing because I know I have sensitive teeth so she gave me a shot. I was in pain the entire time and when I told her it hurt too bad for me to bite down she grabbed my jaw and squeezed my mouth shut. 5) The crown has a sharp edge on it that is cutting my tongue. 6) When I called to get the sharp edge filed down they told me that I couldn't see a different dentist, it had to be the same one that completely ignored my comfort and consent. I'll be paying $100 out of pocket to get a different dentist to fix this mess. Go literally anywhere else.

In fact, if I had been informed that my dentist was no longer here before I came in last month, I would have cancelled my appointment and made other arrangements for a new dentist in a group. I called the group I had contacted when making my choice last summer and asked to get an appointment with them for my next cleaning. It is not much farther away, but I will not be able make a bus connection to it as I had this one. But close enough to get a friend ride or a ride share. I also noticed when I called to cancel the next appointment that they are still using the recorded message that both dentists are available and gave emergency numbers for both. That was very misleading also. I want to reiterate that the glowing reviews on Yelp from past years do not represent the current status of this practice. I did not see any of the former staff last month. It's really a shame.

Dr. Higgins was recommended to me by a friend with the lowest pain tolerance I know. The office for starters is beautiful. They have Planet Earth playing in the waiting room and more books than brochures trying to sell you procedures. The receptionist is always super, super nice. She is chatty if you want to chat or quiet if you want to wallow in self-pity about having your teeth done. Even when I call too early in the morning she is friendly and helpful. A+ The hygienists are great. Friendly and helpful and as pain-free as possible. I hate having cavities searched for by pick. Here they use micoscopes! No unnecessary poking or prodding. The best part is Dr. Higgins though. My first cavity I was a nervous wreck. I was expecting the whole shebang of painful scrapy metal thing, big rubber thing, other big rubber mouth rest, needles, drills, pain, misery. He gave me a demo of his laser tool on his finger. It's that gentle! Makes a loud noise, but otherwise just sprays warm water. It's so cool! He told me "open your mouth, try to hold still." Then zapped it a few times, filled it, and I was out the door in less than 20 minutes. Didn't hurt, no shots, and the worst "pain" I had was water hitting my mouth. You can really tell Dr. Higgins loves what he does. He is not like most dentists who push procedures on you, he has talked me out of procedures numerous times that he thinks are unnecessary. He is passionate about his art and constantly searching for the next cool gadget to make dentistry less uncomfortable and less invasive. If all dentists were like him, no one would be scared of it anymore.
