I have been on a search for a couple of years for a new dentist. I was no longer able to get to my long term dentist as it is a difficult location for me to now access and he will be retiring soon. I tried one that was close by that I could access on my own by bus, but after having a great first visit with the younger dentist there, I returned to discover that he had left when the practice was sold. I had really wanted a multi dentist practice so that if needed on short notice there would be someone available. My long time dentist was a solo practitioner and did not work full time. Through all of this, I had a recommendation for North Boulder Dental which only missed in the self transportation factor and in taking my insurance. After talking to them on the phone, I was assured that they would process my insurance claim but I would pay at point of service and the reimbursement from the insurance would come directly to me. It was close enough to my home that I was sure I could get a ride as the bus I normally use does not go that way. It was a wonderful decision. I don't think in my whole life I had ever had such a wonderful experience in a dental office. I chose a dentist that a friend recommended from their team of 4-6 dentists on staff. They are open 5 days a week which none of the previous offices I had used, did. They had been 4 or under. I was able to get a date and time that worked easily for me. They had me pre-register on their website so that they could save time on arrival, know my dental and medical history and gather my previous dental records from the previous practice. They sent gentle reminders for arrival. When I arrived, I found a clean, attractive and comfortable waiting area, better than any previous situation. Staff greeted me immediately. I was taken on time. I met the dentist, Dr. Nielsen and her assistant, we chatted a little to get familiar with expectations and they went right to work on an initial exam. Most of my teeth were fine, just a few gum issues to address. No cavities, no infections. As I have a serious chronic disease, these are critical assessments. I then proceeded to the hygienist who performed the most thorough but gentle cleaning in my life. This is important as I bleed easily because of my medical condition. Before leaving, I made my appointment for my next cleaning in 6 months. I paid and left, confident it was the right choice. read more

Best dentist ever!! Highly recommend!!!! 10 stars if I could. I've been going here for 22 years & trust them! read more

Update 11/11/25: I went in for a bi-annual cleaning and check-up yesterday. Marian is still a great hygienist. Very thorough and praises me for good home dental habits. She even laughs at my jokes. This dental group in general is full of positive, encouraging folks, from the front desk, to the office folk, to the dental team. I feel like we are all working to keep my mouth, teeth, and gums in good shape. I saw Dr. Dhaliwal this time and found her thorough and knowledgeable about the condition of my teeth. We bonded over both identifying (and me remembering) a cosmetic filling I had done years back on the outside of a tooth. I tend to chat a lot, and Dr. Dhaliwal and I had a good conversation as we went over my x-rays about the state of dentistry in overall medical/health industry. Yeah. :) And I really love that I can see my x-rays and the doc can point out what they see there and any specific concerns.(or kudos!) The only negative was that I had to wait longer than anticipated to begin my exam and cleaning. My appt was at noon, and they had gotten behind. It wasn't a hardship for me because I didn't need to be anywhere right after the appointment. But, if you are squeezing a cleaning in between work, lunch or other appts, you might want to get one earlier in the day to mitigate the chance the office is behind schedule by the time your appt comes around. Update 05/05/25: I am still very pleased with my experiences at North Boulder Dental. I still see Marian and she still does a wonderful job. This time I saw Dr. Sica, who I have been seeing since I joined the practice. We discovered today that we started at the practice about the same time -- 20 mumble years ago! At today's visit, I was due for x-rays. I was concerned about having another x-ray because I'd already had 2 in the last 2 months. Dr. Sica looked at the chart Marian had just updated and said I was good to go for another 6 months. The Staff is patient-focused, knowledgeable, caring, and there to help. I believe my teeth and gums are in good shape not only because of the staff's excellent preventive and proactive care, but because they have instructed me well in how to care for my own teeth and gums. At 60+, I have been able to maintain minimal periodontal disease and to stave off gingivitis so far. That said, the Staff has also seen me through root canals, caps, and replacement fillings. The only Con is that NBD does not take insurance. They have their own dental plan, which does not save us any significant money. (Unless our teeth get worse, which we want to avoid!) Previous Review: I've been with North Boulder Dental for 24+ years. Can't recommend them highly enough! During my visit yesterday, Marian was very personable. She gave me a thorough teeth cleaning and more information about geographic tongue, which helps me deal with it. She and Dr. Kristi praised me for the excellent job I was doing, which helps me feel capable of managing oral health issues. read more

They aren't cheap, but they do great work. I recommend them-I've used them for years.

I've been going to North Boulder Dental for about ten years and they are pretty amazing and thorough . I never liked going to the dentist prior to north Boulder dental , I never even liked cleanings because they were rough and I was reprimanded for not brushing well or flossing correctly . here they make suggestions treat you with respect and do an amazing job , so much so that I enjoy my visits! the staff is polite and my appointments are always on time. they do amazing work, and at times even follow up with a call from the dentist doing the work. I typically work with Dr Nielsen and she is amazing. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a dentist. cheers Gurion read more

I've been going here for over two decades but the front office is terrible. I had a bad experience with a hygienist I saw in February who was a 'temp'. When I confirmed today's appointment last Friday, I WAS ASSURED that I was going to have my teeth cleaned by a staff hygienist . I show up for my appointment today and, again, I'm told that is not the hygienist I was scheduled to see and they had me with another 'temp' hygienist. They couldn't even get their story straight whether the staff hygienist I was supposed to see was in or out of the office. Walked out. Won't be pushed around by an incompetent staff. And I will agree with other reviews that since Bob Murphy retired from the practice, the quality has tanked but, certainly, the prices have gone up! read more

After our dentist of over 20 years retired, my husband and I tried 3 other dental offices in Boulder. All disappointing. Finally, a friend suggested North Boulder Dental and it has been a godsend. Unfortunately, I inherited my father's teeth - prone to cavities and just about every other dental problem. I've had chemo as well so my teeth are a real mess. Dr. Nielsen is incredible - she always works with me and suggests alternative solutions to very expensive procedures. Her dental skills are impeccable - friendly, professional, thorough and extremely knowledgable. The front desk and billing staff couldn't be more pleasant and informed. We are so pleased that we found North Boulder Dental! read more

Really terrible and incompetent office that overcharges patients. I was not told that they were out-of-network with my dental insurance when I made my new patient appointment (I asked if they accepted my dental insurance at the time of making the appointment and they said they did). I also was not told that the new patient visit did not include a cleaning - which required a separate appointment - again, I had asked for a cleaning when making the appointment. Finally, after paying nearly $400 out of pocket for their services and being told that they would submit a claim for reimbursement to my insurance company, I discovered they had never submitted my claim. The dentist herself was good but totally not worth any of this. read more

I highly recommend North Boulder Dental. Dr. Neilsen is on time for visits, informative about my care, knowledgeable, and friendly while being very professional. It is often hard to find a more home town feel in dentistry these days and it is felt at North Boulder Dental. read more

Sadly, I had one of the most frustrating experiences with a business that I've had in years. I came in for a cleaning and left with a charge that was over $500. They did an x-ray and then started a cleaning that was the most painful I had ever experienced. I was told that I would need to come back 6 weeks later to finish the cleaning because there had been too much blood to see everything and clean thoroughly. I went to the front desk and was told that they had done an extra expensive kind of cleaning, but they never discussed this cleaning with me during the appointment. My biggest concern was that these things were never discussed with me. I could not afford both and x-ray and the type of cleaning they chose together, and I never imagined that the visit would be so expensive since I have never had such an expensive cleaning in my life. I also did not wait longer than I have in the past to get my teeth cleaned, so such a change in my experience was not expected. I called the office to see what could be done and was told by several people (including the hygienist) that they would look into covering my x-ray to help me, but they continued to avoid calling me back, and the last receptionist I spoke to (Priscilla) was extremely negative and patronizing. I am shocked by the lack of communication and by the way I was ultimately treated by Priscilla and will never go back. I would have had a better experience and might have chosen to consent to the expensive cleaning if there had been transparency during the visit. I would have also appreciated if those who promised to help me had followed through. Having the final conversation convinced me that I should never be a patient there again. read more

A fantastic appt. from start to finish! We ran late (things happen when you're 82!), and Gabby at the front desk worked with us, so we wouldn't have to return on another day. The hygienist, Shivaun, was VERY patient and helpful with my mother's mobility issues. Everyone was so kind and pleasant. This dental practice is a real gem!! read more

This dental office was awesome under Dr. Murphy. But now that he has retired, I have had two bad experiences. A bad cleaning that led to an infection, and then a meeting with a dentist about said infection. They billed me for another x-ray - but did nothing about the infection. And they no longer let you choose your dentist - even when I specifically asked - you get whomever happens to be there. I won't be going back. Look at the dates under the good and bad reviews. Bad reviews in the last year since Dr. Murphy retired. read more

I was their patient for ten years. Never saw the same dentist, never saw the same hygienist. Today (September 17) when I tried to reschedule an appointment, I was told they were booking appointments 4 months out. They tried two excuses, first that two hygienists had just quit, second, "due to Covid." I'll find a new dental office, one that actually takes the time to establish a knowledgeable relationship with patients. read more

This business is run extremely unethically. I'm a college student and I went here out of network to get a cavity filled. I specifically asked the cost before which they said was $140 total. I paid this after I was done and was good to go. They then continually called me saying I owe more money. They forced me to pay them $500 when I paid them the $140 already as that was the agreed upon price with insurance. I'm a college student who can't afford this and these people take your money unethically. I hope the doctors here who make hundreds of thousands are happy with the money they steal from broke college students. I don't even understand how someone can live with themselves running a business this way. read more

I had been going to North Boulder Dental for 7-8 years. Over the last year, however, my negative experiences have increased. I had one hygienist ask me an extremely personal and inappropriate question. Then, most recently, they sat on my bill processing for two months and proceeded to tell me they were having issues with insurance, followed by immediately demanded payment. You'd think they would have offered to help or provide of guidance in navigating the insurance world (or even a head's up BEFORE they needed payment immediately). Needless to say, I will be looking for a new office where the staff is more polite and treats you like more than a transaction. I will still say that my positive experiences have outweighed the negatives, but these last two experiences left such a sour taste in my mouth. read more

Pros; nice office. Cons: don't use this dental outfit unless you plan to take out a second mortgage. In my experience they come up with manner of gimmicks and tricks to inflate the charges plus everything is rush, rush, rush, I recently had 2 cavities filled which took about 18 minutes and cost over $800, I was just charged $450 for a routine cleaning which was NEVER completed plus the hygienist was coughing in my face the entire time! Don't be fooled by fancy office! read more

Confused as to the negative reviews below. I think North Boulder Dental is great! I knew I needed to get some dental work done but was unsure of who to go to since I'm new to the area. Was recommended to see Tim Kyger from a colleague, and so glad I did. Tim is fantastic. He's empathetic, knowledgable, and his sense of humor has made my visits enjoyable. My husband sees Dr. Sica, and raves about him as well. The dentist office itself is clean and staff is friendly. read more

After many years of being a patient there I have left because I believe that the way they are doing business and practicing dentistry is not entirely ethical. I went in for a routine cleaning and within moments was told I had periodontal disease and needed a crown and other major work. I went for 2nd and 3rd opinions and was definitively told there was absolutely nothing wrong with my teeth or gums. The dame thing had happened to my wife the year before. When I brought this matter to the attention of the Office manager she had a lot of attitude and acted as if I was doing something wrong. Something significant has changed there and I won't be going back. read more

Tim Kyger is an AMAZING employee. I am terrified of the dentist and he made my experience not only bearable... but enjoyable. Laughed the whole time. Have never had such an amazing dental experience. 100% recommend. Looking for a dental office? this place will bring your smile ALIVE. read more

Dr. Murphy is great! He takes the time to explain things and is very personable. He makes going to the dentist easier. Highly recommend him! Update! Took my toddler in for his first visit and I was blown away! My son is very shy and generally dislikes (cries/resists) new people approaching him in close proximity. Dr. Murphy won him over big time. read more

North Boulder Dental Associates is one of the most pleasant organized efficient dental offices I've ever been a patient at. I understand that all the dentists working there are wonderful. The dentist I have been using is Dr. Sica and he is not only a fabulous dentist he's an artist who works miracles in the mouth . He managed to save three teeth that had cavities below the gum line that other dentists said would most likely have to be pulled. In addition everyone who assists, or who works in that office is so kind. I love that they have a monitor set up for the patient to be able to view prior to and during work being done on them. Especially since the images in the slideshow are gorgeous, or hysterically funny or adorable. Or display all of those qualities. North Boulder Dental Associates seem intend on reversing the commonly held attitude that dental appointments are the most unpleasant and painful healthcare annual experiences. On your way out you are invited to choose from a vase sometimes 2 filled with beautiful roses to take one that you favor home for yourself or for your partner. read more

I've been going to North Boulder Dental since I was three years old and can honestly say that I love my dentist! I never understood why people disliked going to the dentist until my husband's first visit here: He hadn't been to the dentist in five years and I had to make the appointment and harass him into actually going. I love him to death, but he's awful at making and keeping any sort of appointment. When he got home that night, he was *excited* by how awesome the dentist was, and went right upstairs to floss after dinner! Since then, his twice-yearly hygiene appointments are the only appointments he willingly goes to! All of the dentists at North Boulder Dental are friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. Every time I go it seems like their equipment has gotten more state-of-the-art, too! The hygienists and assistants are gentle and respectful, and always make sure you're mouth is free before asking you a question! When it comes time to pay the bill, they submit everything to insurance and then call and let you know what you owe so you don't ever have to pay more than is covered, or at least that's how it's been for me. Plus, their prices are reasonable for the type of work they do. read more

This place has become the unofficial dentist office for my company. A couple of us have been going there for years and like it so much we've recommended it to others who are unhappy with their dentist. I don't know if anyone loves the dentist (it's never fun). But I've had many over the years as we've moved, as have my wife and daughters. All of us think the NBDG is really good. read more

I can always trust this dental office. I was told by another dentist that I needed five fillings. I could tell by looking at the xray that something was not right. I came here for a second opinion and they were extremely honest, telling me that I didn't need any fillings and if I had gotten them done it would have damaged my teeth. I am so happy I came here! read more

With little to no description of what was involved in my dental implants, I went happily on my way for the implants. $4800 later, imagine my surprise when I'm told I now need to get the crowns for another $2400 - both figures are after my dental insurance. Because I have no way to pay the additional $2400 as I wasn't given sufficient information to budget, I will either continue to live with my 'flipper' or find a cheaper cosmetic dentist. Do NOT use this dental group unless you are wildly and fabulously wealthy. read more

This is a really great dentist office. I have gone here for a few years and Dr. Sica and the dental hygienists (especially Katie!) are great. Mitzy at the front desk is especially helpful and cheerful (especially helpful since this is a dentist appointment. I am leaving since they don't take my insurance (I recently switched jobs and naturally, so did my insurance). I am very sad to leave. They have early morning appointments (at 7) to accommodate people who don't want to take off work and they will work through all your insurance issues with you. Seriously, they will go through all that crap to help you figure out how much things will cost. Very, very grateful for all the help they have provided me in my dental health. read more

Everyone wants to find their "forever dentist," and you need look no further than Dr. Neilsen. She's great at what she does and you can tell she cares. And the office is great. I didn't want to go during COVID, but I needed to and it actually felt safe. It's a relaxing and attractive environment and I had an excellent experience with the assistants and receptionists also. Plus, they send you home with a rose which in my opinion is much more comforting and personal than a boring new toothbrush read more

This is the best dentist office I have ever been to. High tech, great staff! I refuse to go to any other dentist even if they stop accepting my insurance. I went here on the recommendation of some of my co-workers. It was an ok dentist office, I've had worse but I've had much better. For new patients you have to go in for a new patient consult. I was not told this in advance and was expecting to get my teeth cleaned on my first visit (I even said on the phone that this is what I was looking for). Upon arriving for my visit I was handed a stack of papers to fill out, no problem except the receptionist told me that the person who I made the appointment with should have emailed them to me or told me to get them from the website. I came in about 10 minutes early but still ended up waiting for 20 minutes after my appointment time to be called to an office in the back where I waited for a while longer. Dr. Sica was friendly enough, kinda felt like he was trying to sell me more than what I wanted i.e. orthodontics, teeth bleaching etc. An assistant took x-rays, done the old-school way with films thus a little more x-ray exposure than digital. They didn't bother to get my records from my previous dentist or follow-up with me when they didn't come. Had to make another appointment for the teeth cleaning later at the end of the week. I ended up being 10 minutes late and got read the riot act for it. The cleaning was old-school too. No sonic cleaning just good old-fashioned scraping. Didn't really walk away with that extra clean feeling I normally have. And they still hadn't taken care of getting my dental records. So not bad but could be better. The less-fun part is that apparently all my co-workers are using an out-of network provider so I got an unexpected bill in the mail (my fault for not double checking). Can't believe they break up some of the preventative care to charge more though (I've never been billed for these things separately). Anyway, will be looking for a new dentist. read more

Wonderful practice! I have been going here for two years and have seen three of the four dentists in the practice. They are all extremely knowledgeable, use the best equipment and have wonderful bedside manners. The prices are reasonable (for dental work) and the team goes above and beyond to make sure they answer all of your questions and give you the best level of service! Many of my coworkers and friends also go to North Boulder Dental and love it. read more

I'm blessed with cavity-free teeth at 42, but I go here religiously twice a year for cleanings and very occasionally for a chipped tooth. I've turned two more people on to North Boulder Dental and they both said it was the best Dental experience of their lives... even the one who had drilling and filling done. He has a mouth full of metal and said he didn't realize dentistry could be painless! I've been a patient for about 15 years and have never had a bad experience. Great people, almost always on time, and always professional. read more

Dr. Murphy and his team are by-far the best dental group I've ever experienced. I first went to Dr. Murphy in 1999, and had great care. Unfortunately, I've had other dentists before and after, due to insurance changes. Bad experiences. So I'm back to Dr. Murphy, even though I have to pay out-of-pocket. The expertise, friendliness, professionalism and efficiency are definitely worth it. Everyone - from the front desk to the assistants are kind, happy and know what they are doing. And Dr. Murphy is absolutely the best. I'll be seeing him until he retires! read more

Pretty nice dental office, but expensive. I came in for a cleaning and the hygienist said I was due for an exam. I asked how much an exam was and she said oh, that's for next time and I could ask on my way out. The dentist came in for a few minutes during the cleaning and sure enough I got charged $60 for an exam. So, my bill came to $205. Needless to say, I'll be going elsewhere for cleanings from now on.
