I recalled the incident with great…read moresadness and horror the other night as I watched the Apple television series Pachinko, as it reminded me of the kind of humiliation Dr. Miyakawa tried to inflict on me as I sat in my wheelchair, newly diagnosed with a very rare disease called Periodic Paralysis. I was sitting there with a friend who is the exiled queen of an African nation, whose son was waiting for us downstairs in a car, he of course, is a prince. I knew both of them because the only grandfather I knew had been financial advisor to the country of South Africa, a former ambassador and diplomat-- there are many diplomats and ambassadors in my family history. However, I shared my new diagnosis with Dr. Miyakawa, these words actually came out of her mouth, " you are black, albeit light skinned, but you think I'm going believe some Alison Wonderland diagnosis from you? I'm Japanese I'm intelligent and educated". It was them that I began my journey of understanding that anti-blackness in medicine, particularly with Asian providers. it wasn't the first time in the UCLA system, this happened, it was rather ordinary. The queen and I left, laughing, said a few things to her staff of predominantly African-American women. Dr. Miyakawa did try to apologize to me through another provider, but I refused the apology. There were a lot of laughs that night at the home of my friend as we sat there talking about how insane it all was. But tragically, I think of the patients Dr. Miyakawa does treat who don't know not to walk out and what she really thinks about them. I've been fighting for peoples rights my entire life--I remind people of the first immigration reform act of the United States with 1882 and Dr. Miyakawa knows why. The medical community has to get to the place where they treat patients as human beings, not based upon race, religion or gender bias. I still do not forgive you, that was deeply traumatizing. I should have reported you to the AMA.

Urgent Care Review Only…read more How I spent today. Sunday. Allegedly "Funday". Fun? Not so much, seriously, not so much. Three days ago my hubby complained of fatigue, left sore throat pain, left ear pain. Against my admonishment, he continued to go about his business pure pluck until it wasn't. Immediately rapid Covid tested both of us. Negative two days in a row. Hey, he breathes where I breathe. Sunday, allegedly "Funday" would it be mimosas or urgent care? The latter. He kept telling me he went to UCLA urgent care. I Yelped it. Uh huh, nothing there. Finally, he found a business card in his Rolodex for here. (Yeah, who has one of those? He does.) Since we're both in the St. Johns' Providence system, I recommended we go to urgent care here today (no forms to fill out, etc.) since at the beginning of the pandemic lock down with zero home testing available, he was sick. He went here. Was it a cold or was it Covid then? Cold. Praise be! "Call them from that Rolodex card!", I yelled to determine if care is available on Sunday. It is. M-F: 8:30AM - 7:30PM Saturday & Sunday: 10:00AM - 2:30PM (Doors promptly lock at 2:20PM). Arrived at 11:30AM. Processed and seen by noon even with a few folks ahead. Vitals (A-OK), Covid, Strep test taken, negative. GREAT doctor! Professionalism with a capital "P". Sent home with OTC med Rx and to return or contact primary physician, or EMS if symptoms worsen. P.S. Photos and videos are prohibited! Couldn't even snap a pic of the flyer saying so without getting in trouble...

Today I was treated very well and professionally by the woman at the right side of the desk. They previously were my only complaint about the office, and now I can focus on how fabulous Dr. Ruth Sorotzkin is! She reads the notes carefully from all the previous visits I've had, offers suggestions for preventative care, listens well to my input and quickly follows up with an Rx or an Imaging Request. She's fun, she's funny, and she's clever on top of being a thorough primary care doctor. I'm proud to have her as my PCP.

Dr. Ross was recommended to me by an on-line acquaintance and it turns out that he was an early mentor of my original GP. For the first couple of years, the only negative input was from a friend who was horrified that I'd chosen Dr. Ross. She reported that he'd simply left the room when her daughter had started throwing up in his examining room and was very unengaged. This did not match my experience to that point, but.... After a couple of years, I suffered an injury that required X-rays, an MRI, and ultimately surgery. Dr. Ross was very weak on pushing the required paperwork through Blue Cross and left on vacation without making sure that someone in his office would energetically pursue the matter. Some symptoms became worse and I saw an associate of his who not only got the first paperwork pushed through but ordered additional tests and got them approved...it turned out that I needed surgery. The second doctor's crisp and quick response really was a stark contrast to Dr. Ross' response and I subsequently switched doctors. A specialist expressed surprise at Dr. Ross' initial lack of diagnostic response to my injury and said that perhaps he was just slowing down. Dr. Ross isn't awful but there are better doctors out there. I was very disappointed.

I told him to write an evaluation about it and he didn't want to because he said he does not want to put this nurse in trouble and he said he likes Dr Lee a lot and that's what matters to him. Front desk (Brenda) demotes this 5 star doctor (Dr. Nourmand) into a 1 star practice…read more My gf has been seeing Dr. Nourmand for a while and she loves her. Unfortunately, her front desk is the reason my gf doesn't get the care she deserves. My gf has to call 6 or 7 times (leaving voicemails) sometimes before she gets a call back. I have to constantly see her stress about not hearing back or not getting her prescription refilled. There has been 2 situations where my gf just had to go to urgent care because she could not get a hold of the doctor or even a call back. Who is in charge of scheduling or answering phones at this place?! What kind of business is being run here? This doctor is a great doctor. I have met her myself and her care is amazing, but what's the point of being such a great doctor if it takes 2 months to make an appointment or have such a rude receptionist who never replies back. I am rating this on a whole, and as a whole, I am not happy with this place.

Update 6/5/22: Upon recently logging into the MyChart portal after seeing a new doctor, I noticed…read morethere was a "documentation" entry from February 8th, 2022. How interesting? That was the same day I had a problem with the front office about scheduling an appointment through the Mychart portal. I opened the documentation notes and low and behold the person I spoke with over the phone that day Cynthia, has taken it upon herself to add notes regarding our interaction. These notes paint a false narrative, were not added by my doctor, and do not in any way pertain to my medical well being. Cynthia has her name attached to the documentation, listed as Cynthia H. I think it is grossly unprofessional to have a front desk worker/scheduler add any notes to a patient's medical profile on the Mychart portal, that are not pertaining to patient health. Notes regarding a bad interaction on a telephone call have nothing to do with one's health. These types of notes should be entered into one's file in that specific office, not on the Mychart portal. Even after the numerous bad interactions I've had with front desk workers there, they have never added notes regarding these interactions to the Mychart portal, only Cynthia H. This kind of unprofessional behavior solidifies that I have made the right decision to move on from this office. I ran into Dr. Lily Nourmand in person last week at a birthday party and she was very pleasant as always. Again, it's unfortunate that front desk workers have the ability to ruin relationships between doctors and their patients.
