I was in chronic pain and wanted to find a mind body doctor. I had read Dr David Schechter's books and wanted to find a solution. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Kristina and Vanessa sent forms and prepared ahead of time. The extra 2nd star is for the office staff. I filled out probably 7-8 detailed forms and had to wait 1.5 months to see Dr. Schechter. The day before my appointment I was notified for MBS (mind body syndrome) / TMS patients there's an extra $130 or 150 (I forget exactly the price) you have to pay out of pocket that's NOT covered by insurance. During the zoom appointment Dr. Schechter was 20 minutes late. He didn't review any of my files and just started reading them right there. Prior to our appointment I was really excited to finally get his diagnosis. I had sent a very organized 100 word summary of my conditions and what's I've tried so far.... and that wasn't read either. During our call, he cut me off several times and ask questions that I had been asked 100 times already by other practitioners, questions that easily would have been answered if he read my summary or any of his forms that his office had asked me to fill out. Towards the end of the call about 10 min prior to our 1 hour time, he was rushing to leave while I still had a lot of questions. Interesting considering he was 20 min late. I learned 0%. Nothing new. It was disappointing, being in pain for so long, hoping someone can help you. After this I sought other methods of help and the Mind body stuff really didn't resonate with me anymore. I still believe in Dr John Sarno's work. There are other mind body doctors that do well but they are out of state (CA). If you're reading this now, I wish you luck in your search. Dr. Schecter has been my doctor for a long while and if I could give him 4-1/2 stars, I would do so. My previous doctor, who retired, told me that medicine is an art shared between the doctor and the patient and I believe this to be the case. As such, I'm a patient who tends to ask a lot of questions and, sometimes offers my opinion (which can conflict with the doctor's). In every case, I've been treated respectfully and professionally, and, as such, I believe the doctor and I have succeeded in making some difficult decisions together. I like the messaging system that the office uses which allows patients to see lab results and to exchange messages with the doctor. I took 1/2-star off because a while back, the doctor's front-office person left and there has been some replacements which, while okay, aren't the same. Also, I don't think doctors, by nature, can be perfect. Medicine is still mysterious and complex. No human being can master that -- especially during a 15-minute office visit! I've been with Dr. Schechter for almost 10 years now, and I'm sad that I have to find a new doctor (moved to a new state). His staff has always been kind and on top of things. If you're looking for a doctor to coddle you, that's not Dr. Schechter. However, if you want quality care from someone who stays on top of the latest medical information, pushes you to take better care of yourself, and hears and addresses your concerns, this is your guy. I've been going to see Dr. Schechter for several years as my general physician. Dr. Schechter is not only knowledgeable but is especially skilled at communicating information to his patients. He's very direct with his feedback and is always kind and respectful. I've been most impressed with his responsiveness to my questions. Dr. Schechter and his staff use a secure and compliant email service that I've found very helpful. I've had some basic questions about meds and one question that required more urgent feedback. I sent an email and his responses were always quick and helpful. During the recent COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Schechter has also used the secure email portal to send his patients information and updates about the crisis which I've found very helpful. Extremely rude and arrogant doctor. He made several offensive comments to me and sounded like a smart-ass. Was very cold and unfriendly from the first second he walked in which made me uncomfortable. He berated me for being 5 minutes late which is interesting because other comments on here refer to him being 20 minutes late. I paid around $400 out of pocket to see him and had high hopes. Only for him to pay hardly any attention to what I was saying and snicker at me, and then rush me out the door. He said I went to the Cedars Sinai "pain clinic" which I had never been to in my life. I had told him a few minutes prior that I had seen a neurologist at Cedars, not gone to the "pain clinic" which I don't even think exists. I would have corrected him but he wouldn't let me get a word in at any point. He bragged about making a cameo in a terrible documentary film he recommended. His success seems to have gone to his head and I highly doubt he actually cares about helping most of his patients. If he did, I think he would have shown an ounce of humanity rather than lecture me in a rude tone of voice the entire time. He was very pushy about saying I need to read his book but he didn't bother to explain what it's about and how or why it would help. I ended up having great luck with a different doctor, a rheumatologist at cedars, Dr. Long Pham, who recommended non-drug treatment approaches all the while being extremely warm, caring, compassionate, friendly, and detail oriented. He took his time and made sure I understood everything, explained it very clearly and even drew a diagram to help me understand my condition. A far cry from Dr. Schecter who didn't provide any details or insights, told me to just read his book, and acted like I should already know the solution to my medical problems. I will not be returning to Dr. Schecter and strongly advise others to steer clear of him. I am guessing these positive reviews are either fake or were written before his ego turned sour. I have a friend who also had a terrible experience with him and also found him very arrogant, abrupt and unhelpful. I also know someone who saw him about 20 years ago and had a different experience. Dr. Schechter is the best doctor I have ever had , and that is saying a lot given my age. I have praised his expertise and warm, caring manner before, but this time I want to focus on something that has helped me and my friends for the past two years. Since the beginning stages of Covid, he has written messages to his patients though the patient portal about Covid and our country's response to it. He has been informative, helpful, cheering and non-alarmist all the while making us feel totally cared for. Sometimes he would write 4 messages a month. And always when there was anything new to report. He knew far more than we did and we were just so grateful. I reprinted them as they came in and sent them to my 50 closest friends. This review is prior to seeing the doctor as I felt the need to comment on the disastrous process to just get an appointment. They won't schedule anything until you your send insurance information through their subpar online portal. Once you go through the hassle of creating an account there is actually no place to upload that information. What they don't tell you until you repeatedly call the office is that there is one specific way to send a message with an attachment - why that could not have been done via regular email you ask?! Well your guess is as good as mine. Once sending through the insurance information I get a message in said portal to also send ID and credit card. Mind you you cannot actually reply to the message because you won't be able to upload any files. I mean please I'm in tech and if you are trying to be ahead of the curve with an online portal please make sure it's not actually usable. Now waiting for someone to contact me to finally schedule an appointment. I will update the review after my visit. Update - I was refused an appointment unless I take down this review. If you are suffering unknown back pain or any other chronic pain, I highly recommend Dr. Schechter. I am now 99% free from my serious chronic pain which lasted for 4 years. I have met more than 20 doctors before I went to see Dr. Schechter. Before I met him, I took 4 MRIs(Back, wrist etc), did too many physical therapy sessions, visited Rheumatologist, talked to anesthesiologist, saw multiple acupuncturists... I took PET scans..I tried everything to treat my chronic back pain + knee injury. I saw Dr.Schechter once a month, about 3-4 times then slowly got out of the pain. Of course he's not a magician, but he's very smart and knows what's going on in your body. The most important part is "education". Dr Schecter is a wonderful doctor. Very personable and takes time to not only understand the medical problem, but gets to know you as a person. I love that he is interested in my work and asks about my family. He's been my primary care physician the last two years and I've come to trust his knowledge and experience wholeheartedly. I like that he takes a holistic perspective on medicine, checking in on things like exercise and diet which impact health outcomes, as well as how our thoughts impact our health. I've also utilized Dr Schecter to manage my ADHD medication and get prescriptions. He is knowledgeable about ADHD and the effects of medication. It's great to have a PCP also able to manage my ADHD rather than going to a PCP AND a psychiatrist. He takes all major PPO insurance plans too! Wonderful doctor specializing in TMS pain and family medicine. He trained with the legend Dr. Sarno and has two offices here in the LA area. I made an appointment by calling the office and filling out a few forms. It is a slightly more involved booking process than a general doctor visit, but is an important to understanding TMS. I highly recommend Dr. Schechter and his book, Think Away Your Pain. Dr. Schechter really takes his time to understand the underlying issues you are facing and talk you through realistic steps to alleviate any pain you are in. So many doctors today are quick to suggest surgery or medication and Dr. Schechter is the opposite. Instead he wants to understand the emotional pieces at play. As 64 years of age, I have seen more than my share of doctors, good bad and indifferent. Dr. Schechter is the very best of them all. I've been to him perhaps six times so far, and am most grateful that he agreed to be my primary physician. Ben was suffering from extreme pain in his right hip. After being examined and x-rays and MRI taken by his Ortho doc, it was determined a hip replacement was not necessary. He was referred to Pain Management. That doctor said he had spinal Stenosis and gave him an epidural in the spine. The pain was not alleviated. Months later his pain worsened. We had known about the Dr. Sarno method and we were fortunate to find Dr. Schechter who upon examination told us Ben does not have Spinal Stenosis but that his problem is in his hip. He ordered new x-rays which confirmed that he needs a total hip replacement. Dr. Schechter treats patients with the Sarno method when indicated but it's very admirable that he is able to diagnose Ben's condition as a traditional medical situation which in this case requires surgery. If anyone has unexplained pain, make an appointment to see Dr. Schechter. Pain could be handled via the Sarno method and if not, he is an MD who will treat the patient via traditional methods. read more

I am giving Dr. Schechter an 'average' rating, but I will paste here our last email exchange and let you judge for yourself. Please note that my husband and I both saw him a couple of times, and each time there was an 'issue'; the email below does not detail them all. I omitted our names for privacy; otherwise the emails are unchanged. I will say that he sticks to his schedule, which means you have ~10 minutes to get your story out and be examined, but you will probably not sit in the waiting room an undue length of time. He was generally prompt in responding to emails. In a message dated 1/4/2008 5:40:44 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, XXX writes: Dr. Schechter, My husband XXX came to see you on December 18 and you were kind enough to see him on short notice as he was running a fever and had a few other problems. You wanted him to come back in two weeks, which would have been Jan. 1. When I called your office to make his follow up appointment, I presented that dilemma and was told that XXX should come in on January 4; I asked for the last appointment of the day and was told "5:00" which I immediately wrote in my calendar, and which I immediately emailed to XXX for his calendar at work. XXX just walked in the door at home, after leaving work early (which was a big imposition, as big as it would be for you) and hurrying across town in the rain. Needless to say, you are not in the Culver City office at 5 on Fridays. I had assumed that you were temporarily extending your hours because of the holidays. I wanted to give you the courtesy of letting you know that this, on top of XXX's lost lab work and his unperformed PSA (which necessitated his coming back to the office after his physical) have combined to give him a very low level of confidence in your office. He thinks you're a good doctor, as do I, but he cannot continue to deal with the office mishaps. He is feeling fine, he finished the entire course of Cipro, and he hasn't had a fever for almost two weeks, so he won't be coming in for a follow-up. This is the doctor for you if you have hurt yourself playing sports or as in my case, an auto accident. I had a ruptured ACL, macerated medial meniscus, herniated lumbar and cervical discs and a laundry list of other ailments which Dr Schechter has treated me for or referred world class specialists to treat me. It's a testimony to Dr Schechter that every single specialist he has referred me to not only holds him in high esteem, but are as skilled, professional and as warm and kind as he is. His office staff are also a positive reflection of him, and I have never been disappointed in their efforts to assist me. I've never waited an unreasonable amount of time for my appointment (unlike some offices, Dr Schechter is on time, though you never feel rushed either when seeing him). This is NOT an office where you have an appointment at 3 and aren't seen until 4. Dr Schechter will utilize every method possible to ensure you receive the care you require to become well again. He follows through, makes checkup calls himself and is just a wonderful doctor and person. I went to Dr. Schechter based on the yelp reviews but I can say that I have never felt more money-swindled by a doctor in my life. After the first visit I came home thinking, this guys is great, he handled everything in one appointment! What a joke. I went to him 4 times, and to about 15 visits to different referral doctors/exams. The first visit he diagnosed me right away for a problem that I've had in my back for 5 years and injected me with 4 trigger point injections. I had asked if it would be bruised and be painful to sit the next few days because I work at a desk and he said "No." I was bruised for 1.5 MONTHS. It wasn't pretty. I decided to continue with his suggestion of going to the chiropractor regardless. The chiropractor tells me that what they injected.. was a bone. Great. I go to get x-rays to make sure and they tell me to come in to get an ultrasound because they think they see another problem. I make the appointment through Dr. Schecter and asked him to call me before I went in because I wanted to make sure that the ultrasound was necessary before paying all of that money. Never got the call (even though the receptionist told me twice that he was going to) but the receptionist assures me that I will get to speak to Dr. Schechter at the time of my appointment. Nope. He tells me he would love to talk to me about why my back is PERMANENTLY and very noticeably dented/disformed from the shots but I didn't make a REAL appointment. Cha-ching? But surprise, I was charged for a "doctors visit" on my next bill in addition to the ultrasound. Oh and $700+ later (post insurance) I was told "I'm not sure what it is, just stretch." Finding Dr. Schechter has changed my life...Seriously!!! I have had leg pain for 10 years, have tried countless tests/procedures globally with zero results. I was looking for sports medicine doc close to my office for an evil case of "golfer's elbow." I found Dr. Schechter. I had an appt the next day in Culver city. Ordinarily, I get very painful cortisone shots directly into the tendon, and those take care of it for a while. Dr. Schechter is a genius with a hypodermic. I felt no pain at all, and the treatment was as effective as it usually is. I'm going back tomorrow. read more

Dr. David Schechter saved my life!!! After suffering migraines since childhood and extreme back pain for 8 years, he diagnosed me with TMS and sent me to a therapist whom I saw 4 times. 6 years later I have not had one single pain pill. Not one single incident with pack pain. 98% less headaches. Total cost under $1000 (I had no insurance and paid for all services out of my own pocket). I spent thousands and thousands of dollars with neurologists, specialist, and chiropractors with no results. A dear friend in Houston has had back pain on and off for 15+ years. She had gone to all kinds of doctors and, chiropractors and massage therapists. I flew her to LA to see Dr. Schechter. She saw him once and a therapists he recommends, Alan Gordan, twice. She flew home and 8 months later has had no back pain except for one 2 day experience. She used what she was taught and it stopped on the second day. I found Dr. Schechter thru Yelp in Jan '11 & saw him 1st time a week later in the Culver City office. He was the answer to my prayers! I knew what I needed and didn't want to waste time and money to see someone that would make me jump through hoops before taking care of my problem. Yes, I have long term health issues, but I just wanted THIS problem taken care of now. I desperately needed help and with no insurance, and new in town, I didn't know where to go. Thanks to reviews, I found the doctor for me! Thanks Pete N and a few others, it was your reviews about the shots that helped me tremendously. I was at the point of dragging a leg due to hip/muscle issues. The first visit with multiple shots in my hip/butt area and I was able to actually walk almost normal after months of progressively getting worse!! I could lift my leg for the first time in 4 months. No joke. He knows what he's doing. Over the course of a few months, he perfected the areas that need injections and though the problem requires every few weeks more injections, each time is successful. Dr. Schechter is nothing but compassionate, efficient (I just want the job done and move on), and knowledgeable.. This is no frills place and he does work a bit quick maybe for some, but for me, that's perfect. I am fast paced too. I'd rather know he can squeeze me in if absolutely necessary because he works quick, than have to wait 2 weeks because he spend so much time with patients that he can't get me in for a quick visit. I found Dr. Schechter in a search for the best Dr. in L.A. who was knowledgable in and willing to diagnose TMS (Tension myositis syndrome), a benign, yet acute, pain syndrome with origins in repressed psychological anxiety. (Not all are knowledgable in this diagnosis.) The first Dr. to characterize "TMS" and name it, was Dr. Sarno in NY, and my research led me to the conclusion that Dr. Schechter was the closest I'd come in L.A. to seeing New York's famous, Dr. "To the Stars" Sarno. At the time, I was experiencing severe pain in my upper-back and neck, as well as tricep weakness, and was hoping for a TMS diagnosis, as opposed to something more physically serious. Despite his expertise in TMS, Dr. Schechter immediately ruled TMS out as a diagnosis, due to the objective weakness in my tricep. While this was not what I was hoping to hear, it's demonstrative of the fact that Dr. Schechter isn't so prejudiced by his own expertise in the area of TMS, as to show bias against ruling it out. I've come to learn and appreciate, that even the best Dr's aren't immune to confirmation bias, so this was the first thing that clued me into Dr. Schechter's exceptionalness. However what made Dr. Schechter, quite literally, exceptional, is the fact that although I had previously seen a half-dozen orthopedists and surgeons, and ALL of them were looking at the same MRI films and reports, Dr. Schechter was the first and only Dr. to notice that the scans had revealed a nodule on my thyroid. While I don't consider most of the other Dr's I saw to be slouches by any means, it seems that even the best have a tendency to be myopic towards their own area of expertise. Once again, Dr. Schechter showed himself to be an exception to this understandable, yet unfortunate, rule. The nodule Dr. Schechter identified did turn out to show a small amount of malignancy, so he essentially found (and I ultimately had removed) a Cancer in it's very early stages. Although, the nodule was sizable, it was located in such a place as to be invisible to the sight and touch, so I have no doubt that if it weren't for the Good Dr. Schechter, I would still have this asymptomatic Cancer festering in my neck... for who knows how long. Today, I went back to Dr. Schechter for a sciatica, which to my relief and suspicion, is TMS, and I have no doubt that I'm in the best hands on the West Coast in terms of a TMS diagnosis. (If you are dealing with pain syndromes like sciatica, back-pain, etc. and contemplating surgery, I urge you to first get Dr. Sarno's "Healing Back Pain" from Amazon, and then make an appointment to see Dr. Schechter.) This one very intelligent, caring and compassionate doctor. Out of all of the doctors that I have seen over my lifetime, he is among the best!!! He has treated me for illness, food poisoning from a local restaurant, back pain, removal of growths on my back, and knee pain. With the back pain and knee pain, I received shots. I had not one bit of pain with these office procedures as he is extremely knowledgeable about pain management. Recently, he helped me quit smoking. I have succeeded beautifully and without tons of withdrawal problems thanks to his help. I saw Dr. Schechter for my yearly physical. He barley listened to what I was telling him about what was going on with me, didn't seem to take seriously what I told him and blurted out a very unhelpful diagnosis seemingly before I was done talking. On top of that, when I tried to ask questions, he talked over me while I was mid-question and was in such a rush to get me out, didn't give me a chance to ask all my questions, of which I only had 3. I left with the feeling and understanding that this Dr. is not interested in me as a patient/person, but the money he'd be making from me. read more

Saw Dr. Schechter for back pain and was very impressed. He's got a zany personality (could easily be a character from Seinfeld) but he's thorough, listens carefully to your problems and goals, and outlines a short and long-term plan on how to achieve those goals. Found him very honest about how certain surgeons know how to profit off your pain and what to avoid. Dr. Schechter is a quick-talker but he gets to the point and wants to help. read more
