One of the worst doctor visits ever. Dr. Champine treated me like I didn't matter. He didn't introduce himself when he entered the exam room. He made me feel like I had no reason to be there or to take up any of his time with my knee pain. He asked me what I was doing there since my x-rays looked normal. He did ask a few questions, but in a humoring me kind of way. He never addressed me by my name. The entire visit took less than 10 minutes. He basically told me I had to live with my knee pain forever. He suggested a few rounds of therapy and had a mocking expression on his face the entire time. The staff was wonderful but he was rude and cold. He didn't even say goodbye when he left the exam room. Terrible experience. read more

I did a lot of research prior to picking a Doctor to do my knee replacement. I liked the group of doctors at Texas Orthopedic associates. I liked that most of them came out of UT Southwestern with very impressive resumes. I went to a different doctor first who does not perform knee replacements, but highly recommended Dr. Champine. I had a short informative meeting with Dr. Champine where he laid out a very disciplined process that gave me great confidence that he was the guy to do my knee replacement. I'm still early in the process, one week out from surgery yesterday. I went out with the family and had a steak to celebrate last night using a cane. I'm off pain meds, doing well in rehab and everything is going better than I thought it would. I will drive myself to rehab today and walk it off along the Trinity River after. The physical therapists at rehab came over to see and compliment my nicely zippered incision asking who did it. They nodded when I answered Michael Champine one saying he does beautiful work. Thanks to Dr Champine and his great team I will be spending thanksgiving dinner with my family in Austin 2 weeks after surgery instead of perhaps home in bed. read more

What I've learned since my first review is that ignorance about the hip-spine relationship is almost universal among orthopedists. If you have scoliosis and need hip replacement, please contact Dr. Lieberman's office at the Scoliosis and Spine Center at Texas Back Institute in Plano, and ask about the "Gait Study." They'll image you before and after hip surgery to learn more about the interrelationship. No answers yet, but at least they're asking questions. Another tip - hip replacement may affect your scoliosis, even though the docs will tell you "no connection." Good luck finding doctors who believe you when you report the changes you experience. I believe you! Bottom line. Dr. Champine did a good job fitting me with a new hip, and a lousy job recognizing unintended consequences. So, I'll up my rating. read more

He did double knee replacements on me in 2008 and it was the easiest surgery I've ever had and here it is 2022 and they are still working great. Dr Champine is a fantastic surgeon he does not sugar coat anything he tells you right up front if your not sure your not going through with it don't waste his time he's very bush and does great work read more

I was having lots of trouble with the left knee, I went to see this "specialist". What a joke. Entire length of office visit (by the doctor) was less 10 minutes. No questions like what activities make it hurt, where does it hurt, does it always hurt in the same location, is the pain always the same and in the same location. Nothing. The doctors only comments were, "the x-rays look good", and "you don't have X, so you must have arthritis". I am prescribing a steroid shot and 3 weeks of physical therapy. See you in 3 months." And all of this wonderful diagnosis cost $247 for the office visit and $138 for the x-rays. Like hell I'll return in 3 months. 8/21/12 Update: The knee continued to hurt (even worse with assigned exercises). I finally went to a 2nd doctor, Dr. Jeffery Klein in Garland. He took the usual X-rays, asked a bunch of questions then scheduled me for an MRI. The MRI clearly showed that the problem is a stress fracture at the top of my tibia. Dr. Champine got it all wrong, i.e. mis-diagnosis and incorrect treatment. I am now in a brace for at least 6 weeks depending on my progress. I am finally heading in the right direction. read more

If I could give him a 10+ I would! He's the best! I'd had a tibial plateau fracture in 1996 from an accident on a raft trip on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon and knew I'd need a knee replacement. I was told within 5/6 years. I stretched that out to February, 2013 when Dr Champine did the full knee replacement. The entire experience was incredible and while the recovery wasn't all that easy, it went along smoothly, quickly and painless. He was there every step of the way and not at all like the experience from 2 others here. The office staff too was remarkable and whenever I called with a question, I was always greeted with a warm caring attitude. His PA Darren Hughes is very knowledgeable and easy to speak to. He also gives very good information and explains thing well. I spoke with Dina several times during my recovery and she was great. She always reassured me I was going along normally. The surgery itself and hospital were both top notch. I had NO pain and wonderful care from every nurse. I had his special "joint juice" as it's called, and pain meds when needed. My only complaint - the food at the hospital left a lot to be desired! Ha !! Minor detail. And certainly no fault of Dr Champine!! Dr Champine had me do physical therapy at home and my wonderful "physical terrorist" Karma pushed me hard and I'm thankful she did as I progressed fairly quickly. She works with a lot of his patients and knew exactly what he expected. I pushed myself also and the only time I used a cane was when Karma was there making me walk and do stairs. (No accidents on her watch!!) Today my knee is better than it's been in maybe 30 years. There's nothing I can't do, even get down on my hands and knees and clean the tile on my kitchen floor!! (No that isn't why I had my knee done!!) I searched and read about all the top doctors doing knee replacements in the Best Doctors issue of the Big D Magazine. Dr Champine has been at the top of these lists for more than 10 years - and I can definitely see why! They are voted on by their peers. Who they would go to or have family go to if they needed their specialty. Dr Champine was always a to choice. He's amazing. I cannot recommend him higher because he's already the best of the best. He spent about 10 minutes with me, max. Cold as a fish. Asked me nothing about what I was trying to accomplish with my hip surgery, what my options were, etc. I could tell he was already on to the next patient in his mind. He reminded me twice that replacements are only good for about 13-15 years. I already knew that. Being 60, I asked him if waiting awhile might be smart if I can stand the aggravations. His response was "No, the average age of death for American men is 73". Was he saying I might as well get it done now since I'll probably be dead at 73? My parents and grandparents lived into their 90's and for the first time in my life, this guy now has me thinking I have 13 years left. He may be right, but he won't see a penny of my money. I'll find a doctor who can at least PRETEND to care a little about me as a person. read more
