When compared to other local cinemas, Movieland is a real winner in terms of its location. Situated close to the Kempstones Road, this cinema is part of the Ards Shopping Centre complex and is only a short walk from food outlets such as McDonalds, KFC and Burger King. There is also a seemingly non-existent Cantonese restaurant, as although there is a blatant sign advertising it- it is nowhere to be found and has never actually opened. Spooky....However the cinema does advertise 'nearby' restaurants within the town, even though the majority are at least a good ten minutes walk away!
As customary with cinemas, the snacks (including nachos, sweets and popcorn) are overpriced but are not as extortionate as large chains. The ticket prices are also fairly good, with discounts for students and NHS nurses.
The 3D film tickets are usually priced at £5, which is a bargain when compared to other cinemas. However one slight drawback is that you have to purchase your own 3D glasses (and cases if desirable) for an additional £1 rather than merely borrowing them. Whilst this is a tad annoying at the time, the reasonably priced tickets more than compensate for this. It also means that you can actually watch 3D programmes on television without having to wear the standard (and rather flimsy) carboard glasses...usually free with magazines.
Movieland is also that little bit more quirky when it comes to cinemas, due to the fact that it houses a fully restored Compton organ. Over the years, a number of accomplished organists have 'tickled the ivories' in a series of recitals. Classic films such as 'Back to the Future' are shown on a frequent basis, although this is usually only listed on the website. The cinema is also embarking on a new venture by holding an evening of mediumship, showing it's ability to diversify as a venue.
However although Movieland has many great attributes, I often worry about its future-as each time I have visited it has resembled a ghost town (...and I don't have bad taste in films just to clarify!) On the other hand, this gives you more choice in terms of seating!
Movieland is definitely one of the better (and more economically-friendly!) cinemas within the province, but whether it will withstand the test of time remains to be seen... read more
