City Centre

Best cinema ever!…read more Despite the fact that we have a cinema locally to where we live, the Movie House on the Dublin Road is the only cinema we go to. The cinema is in a good location in town with lots of on street parking available, or if it's busy, there is a multi story car park to the rear. If you fancy making a night of it, there are lots of restaurants in the area too. The cinema itself is over two floors, with food kiosks on both, and a coffee bar on the first floor, in case you arrive super early for the film, like we always seem to! There is a good selection of food available: Nachos (My favourite) with lots of cheese sauce and salsa, hotdogs, ice-cream, bags of sweets, crisps, and pick-n-mix. The screens are spacious and the seats are comfortable, what more could you ask for!

There's local bars and restaurants you can grab a bite from before you catch a movie. Parking across the road (free after 9pm) - literally a 30 second walk from the door. Simple booking process - you can book tickets online and use the self service ticket machine, definitely do this at weekend and peak times as it will save you a lot of time queuing. Cheap - £6.50 per ticket with student and OAP discounts Cons; Unreserved seating which makes it a bit of a free for all and means you should turn up early of you want to get good seat. As mentioned queues let this place down - it may be due to its popularity but you need to make sure you arrive at least 15 minutes before your screening time if you want to get snacks.

Had a really great experience at Movieland today. I volunteered to take my nieces to the cinema and…read moreI saw Movieland from a completely different perspective. For kids it's amazing. The car park is huge so you can get parked close to the cinema doors. They have a family pass offer allowing 2 kids and 2 adults entry to a movie for £16. Also and an absolute godsend, they have a big stack of kids booster seats, these were needed for my tiny nieces! The movie theatre itself is m slightly dated but definitely has charm. We were in screen 6 and the sound was excellent. The seats are really low so definitely grab boosters if you're with little ones. Snacks, as with most cinemas these days are very pricey. £4 for a large popcorn and £2.25 for a small drink. The shopping centre is in close proximity so I recommend picking up some snacks before you go in!

The snack shop inside is limited to really expensive treats such as nachos and some kind of toxic yellow dip thing that looks and smells vile. The also stock the usual cinema fodder of popcorn and vats of soft drink - you will need to remorgage your house to enjoy them though. Heres a tip: there is Asda garage a few meters away from the cinema where you can get your treats for normal prices and although the cinema frown on own purchases being bought in they tend to just turn a blind eye. I also went to the cinema recently to see inception and they had a bloody interval - i was seething as I couldn't work out if it was part of the films plot. There is also a fully kitted out chinese restaurant upstairs but don't try to eat there as it was established about four years ago but never actually opened!

The centre is a far oh eh from the shabbiness of the old curleys cinema! It's clean, well kitted out, and has the usual suspects that you would want at a cinema...only no hotdogs or crisps...which is what I always want lol! But got nachos instead...which come with the jalapeños in a wee sachet, as well as a tub of salsa...so no soggy nachos!!! Result! And the prices weren't overly expensive either Ordered tickets online, picked them up there at the touchscreen kiosk, got our grub and headed in Bish bash bosh...done! Great wee impromptu night, yes it's a small cinema...but it does the job rightly

Today I held a private screening of Night at the museum 3, for my son and 14 other children and the staff were unbelievable. You might be reading this thinking "Private screening bet that cost a fortune!" If this thought is scrolling around your mind, it is very wrong. For £5.50 per child, we were given our own screen and each of the kids got a small popcorn and a drink! With accompanying adults going free! Those of you unfortunate enough to have to book and pay for a kids party will know that is good value, and I really can't understand why they don't advertise this. Anyway, before the show started the team advised me that I could have the screen for another half hour after the show had ended to sing the obligatory rendition of happy birthday and even bring food in! What a great party the kids had and in such a great setting which really added to the occasion. The massive benefit of having the staff handle clean up, really meant a stress free time and a very enjoyable day. PS Ben Stiller needs to stop doing those films now.

There's always an air of excitement when Belfast Film Festival begins and this year has been no…read moredifferent. With the Northern Irish film Industry booming it seems like this year's festival will be a celebration of the talent that we have on these shores. The Belfast Film Festival organisers are excellent at promoting local venues and businesses. For instance last night I attended a special screening of Network aptly shown in a BBC studio at Balckstaff House. The venue was a perfect compliment to the movie and this is the beauty of The Belfast Film Festival - it provides a cinematic experience. The local promotion didn't stop there as Fratelli's hosted the pre movie drinks. It's fantastic to see a festival and local businesses work together to promote all Belfast has to offer. Venues include QFT, The Black Box and Moviehouse on the Dublin Road. This is the 15th year of The Belfast Film Festival and it's running from 16th April - 25th April - so if you want to see some local talent in the big screen or just want to see some local venues in a different light then look no further.

Belfast Film Festival takes place every year in April for two weeks…read more The programme is usually very varied, so it's hard to describe it exactly. Basically though, you can expect every kind of film; comedy, sci-fi, art house, horror, classic and there's usually a strong local or Irish feel about it too. The movies are screened in venues all over the city, some conventional cinemas and some more unconventional venues (like on a boat going on the Lagan for instance!) For proper film buffs, there are talks and workshops as well. There's generally something for everyone and it's a great chance to see some interesting films in unusual settings. There are also special events that take place during the rest of the year, so it's always worth keeping an eye on the website to see if there's anything on.
