Best cinema ever!…read more Despite the fact that we have a cinema locally to where we live, the Movie House on the Dublin Road is the only cinema we go to. The cinema is in a good location in town with lots of on street parking available, or if it's busy, there is a multi story car park to the rear. If you fancy making a night of it, there are lots of restaurants in the area too. The cinema itself is over two floors, with food kiosks on both, and a coffee bar on the first floor, in case you arrive super early for the film, like we always seem to! There is a good selection of food available: Nachos (My favourite) with lots of cheese sauce and salsa, hotdogs, ice-cream, bags of sweets, crisps, and pick-n-mix. The screens are spacious and the seats are comfortable, what more could you ask for!

Cheap - £6.50 per ticket with student and OAP discounts Cons; Unreserved seating which makes it a bit of a free for all and means you should turn up early of you want to get good seat. As mentioned queues let this place down - it may be due to its popularity but you need to make sure you arrive at least 15 minutes before your screening time if you want to get snacks.

I've cried at cartoons, laughed at documentaries and rocked out at the rockumentaries. You should also keep an eye out for their special events. Last week I saw the new Hockney documentary which included a live link up to the artist's studio in LA and was shown in tandem with 200 cinemas across the UK. It was awesome. I took my Dad who usually falls asleep within 15 mins of anything, and he was on the edge of his extremely comfortable seat! The new bar area is a lovely ,relaxed space, and it makes a nice change to smell culture rather than overpriced sickly popcorn! ;-)

The QFT is one of the few independent cinemas left in Belfast (probably in Northern Ireland…read moreactually). It's the place to see modern, largely independent films. It's also a great place to see films like Coco Before Chanel or La Vie En Rose - pretty well known and successful films, but not mainstream enough for the chain cinemas. You'll get a mix of students, film buffs and Guardian reader types (I mean no offence, I include myself in that group!) here, all enjoying the chance to see something different, challenging, and hopefully more interesting than some of the films available in bigger screenings. The only criticism I have is of the screens themselves. There isn't a lot of leg room (not a problem for me, I'm 5ft3", but anyone over about 5ft6 would have trouble), and only some of the seats are elevated. At a screening of Coco Before Chanel, the only seat I could get was in the third row and as a result, I could see the bottom of the screen. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but when the film is subtitled, it's a pretty fatal flaw. Thankfully, my French isn't terrible, so I was able to fill in some of the blanks, but others weren't so lucky. There are always some great films and talks on at the QFT during the Belfast Film Festival, so whether you're a casual fan or a total film buff, this place is worth checking out.

The Strand is truly a grande dame among the modern multiplexes and I love it for that. It has been fully refurbished and divided into 4 screens, one of which is tiny and feels cosy without being claustrophobic. There are still some traces of how the cinema used to be set up, like the very old fashioned ladies and gents toilets which are accessed diectly from the seating area in the largest screen. You can still hear the film while you are on the loo!! Despite some quirky oldfashionedness, you'll still get all the latest releases showing here and a fab touch for me is that all seats are £3 all day on Wednesdays, even during the school holidays. This makes a big difference to your budget if you're taking 5 children to the cinema as a I did last summer and lived to tell the tale. The shop is a little basic but you'll still get all the popcorn, drinks and sweets you can scoff. Tricky to get parked directly outside but there is a small car park just around the corner. Oh and there is a 'meal deal' arrangement with the Gourmet Burger Bank just up the road - £9.95 for a meal and cinema ticket Sunday to Thursday. Hard to beat.

The cinema itself is excellent, showing new releases, classics and having special screenings. Get this! It's only £4 for any movie before 7pm and then only £5.50 after &pm for adults! That's a bargain when you compare it to other City Centre cinemas. Here's a wee sneaky insider tip - There isn't any parking for the Strand but if you take advantage of the £12.50 movie and meal deal at the Park Avenue Hotel next door you can park your car there! I love what The Strand Arts Centre represents, it's about the experience rather than just the movie. If you a cinema fanatic you'll love the character of the Strand!

Last night we made the trip down to see the 8:30pm showing of the Martian. I was expecting the place to be empty being that it was Tuesday night and a little later, but no, the car park was jam packed. I couldn't quite work out where all the people were because when we got inside City Side it was like a ghost town (excuse the Halloween pun). The cinema is located on the second floor of City Side Mall, right above a B&M Bargains. Handy to know if you don't want to buy all the premium cinema snacks. It was 13 screens so there's always plenty of choice and good viewing times. The cinema costs £3.50 per adult which I think is an absolute bargain although last night we paid an extra £1 for 3D glasses. There's 2 separate snack stands meaning that you won't be queuing through the movie trailers. The screen we were in last night (screen 4) sat around 100 people and was well laid out. The sound quality was average, at times I thought it was a little muffled but nothing to complain about. Overall this Moviehouse is great - really convenient and well looked after. A definite 4 stars.

With a wide range of films, to multiple showings and online booking, what more could you ask for? Well maybe heated seats and a personal waiter to refill my drink when the need arises, but life's not perfect. Despite its age, the building is in good nick and always to a high standard of cleanliness. Staff are pleasant and always more than willing to help with any enquiry. Crazy Tuesday's are exactly as they are advertised-crazy! So make sure you either book online or get down early to avoid the queue which often transcends the front entrance. If like me, you fancy the quieter nights where you can sprawl across two seats, slurp as loudly as possible and question every character on screen try a Monday or Wednesday...plus double whammy on Wednesdays if you're an Orange customer with their 2 for 1 offer.

They do student discount and also have a discount night on Tuesday (Crazy Tuesdays, the students love it), regardless of that, it's certainly on the cheaper end of Belfast Cinemas. The only slight negative is some of the older smaller screens smell fusty, could probably do with a good air out! Seats are just first come first served so get there early for the freshly released blockbusters.

The cons to this place first to get them out of the way then. First and foremost, it's run down. The seats are still among the more comfortable you're likely to enjoy a movie in, but there will be rips in the fabric of some and stains on others, plus you can feel the groove of many of the people who have sat in them before over the years. So it could do with some investment to spruce it up. There is also then the cost of parking to consider and that car really the only way to get here as it's a bit out of the way otherwise. If you want to make an evening of it, there is the problem that the run down nature of the place is reflected across the whole Odyssey Pavilion which means that there is nowhere left in the complex to eat, other than a Pizza Hut or a lighter bite in the Street Café here. The price of drinks and snacks here, like most cinemas is also way over the top. My last 2 visits with my daughter cost more in snacks than it did for the tickets! The pros then. Well there are the ticket prices.... The deals on a Tuesday or Thursday and the member's card discount (free to join) are good and there will be many movies available for £3.00, which for a movie ticket these days is a steal! The range of snacks is really good as well, from hot dog (proper frankfurter), through popcorn, chocolates and a good pick n' mix to choose from. They also have good screening times and continue to show older movies that have been out a while longer than most others, I think they can due to the number of screens they have. The staff are also pretty nice and helpful and they do seem to run a few nice little events aimed at families. For example when we were there on one occasion they had a free to use bouncy castle and a petting zoo for the kids. I like this place, it still makes it feel like an event going to a movie here, but I would have to acknowledge I may look at the place through slightly rose tinted glasses. But with a tidy up I think it could quite easily be a good cinema in anyone's estimation!

We asked the barista at a coffee shop down the street what some fun things to do around the area were and she pointed to this movie theatre and said that we could go see a movie and go bowling. So that's exactly what we did. The theatre is located in the upper level of a mall. The mall itself was completely dead and looked like it was going through some renovations. We made our way up the escalator and it led us directly to the theatre. You shouldn't get lost trying to find it. We bought tickets to the VIP screening of A Simple Favour, which also came with a drink and popcorn. For all of that it cost £15 per person. We made our way to the theatre and realized that we were sitting in large, comfy, recliner chairs. The ones you'd see in your grandpa's living room - except leather and more sleek. It felt like I was watching the movie from my own home! For a Friday night, the theatre was pretty empty. We were surprised that it was only us and two other women who ended up watching the movie. If I lived in Belfast, I'd definitely frequent this movie theatre, solely because of these large, comfy, recliner seats.

Do you ever buy sweet popcorn and only one in every twenty of the popped corns actually taste good and not like old warm card board. Well with movie house popcorn three in every four popped corns are as sweet as it can get... Also another reason to go here is that they have the most choice...so if your taking a gamble you'll be more certain to find a flick you like.

I'm actually quite a fan of them compared to other cinemas in Belfast, because they really do have some good points. The parking is free, the sweets, popcorn, chocolate, ice cream, nachos (oh GOD how I love the nachos!) are all reasonably priced, and there are loads of screens and you can book in advance and avoid all the queues especially if there is a popular movie on. What I don't like about it is there is a massive pile of stairs to get up in order to see your movie, it's like you have to prove you are fit enough to eat that massive pile of popcorn once you get to the top. The seating isn't quite as swanky or comfortable as the Odyssey cinema, but it's good enough, and they do Crazy Tuesdays - which sometimes really are Crazy - but good value for money. Not a bad place to go to see Brad Pitt and wish you lived in Hollywood...
