OK so I want to love Battle Racing, but unfortunately this place leaves a lot to be desired…read more I recently went here for my cousins birthday because he wanted to live out his inner child dreams of doing real life Mario Kart. We went in a large group, and got to try out both the racing and the shooting game they offered. The actual race is so fun - you can buy a package to do two races that's around $25, but they offer group discounts and deals the more tickets you buy. I had a blast racing the go-karts, and it was even more fun because I beat my entire family much to their dismay. While the go-kart experience is fun, the entire experience of Battle Racing is pretty mediocre. The building itself is pretty run down, and the staff is not very welcoming or helpful. The place doesn't have a lot to offer in terms of other games to play while you wait your turn, and they also do not offer reservations and the experience is first come first served. I would imagine that creates a weird experience if you aren't the first ones to arrive like we were. There is only one bathroom for the entire space, so if the place is full you have to wait quite a bit. They also offer food and private party services, but seemed pretty unprepared for our private party which my cousin booked in advance with time details and food requests. I think this place could be really successful if they spruced the place up a bit, offered a bit more organization when it came to booking, and had a more welcoming team. There is definitely potential, but it missed the mark for our party this weekend. There is a free parking lot in the back of the building, as well as street parking. Overall, if you want to go-kart race here I would be prepared for an in-and-out experience as it's not a place you want to linger.

We either caught this place on the come-up (maybe a "soft opening"), or it has not reached its…read morepotential. The space is great & the location is good. The things that have been paid attention to (outside decor, the inside lighting, the overall theme etc) are well done. From that aspect, you are transported once you walk through the doors. But, the inner-workings lack the competitiveness to be in the same general area as K1 racing or Dave & Busters. There are better options that appear to run a tighter & cleaner operation 20 minutes in each direction. The battle karts were fun & do employ the gaming aspect that make them more than just go karts. But the software is wonky, the track felt small, & the safety precautions by the attendant were pretty much nonexistent (we had a 9 year old riding w the belt half on & a 14 year old who asked the attendant about tightening the seat belt only to be waved at & be told that it didn't matter). Eating in a room with only neon & black lights isn't too bad...unless you have to kill a roach (which we had to do) & then not having clear, bright-light sight of your food is concerning. (I know this is S FL & having a roach in a warehouse in downtown in the heat is hard to avoid - but this is my actual experience & if that sort of thing grosses you out, I thought you should know.). The gel-ball shooting game is pretty innovative - a mix between paintball & nerf that use small gel caps that sting but don't hurt too bad. Face masks are provided with different nerf implements to use as shields. The space for this competitive team shooting game is a shared space, with spare battle karts taking up a portion of the area. While the shooting zone is separated by a chain link fence, spectators do get hit with strays. Although players have masks, spectators are completely vulnerable. Several older people in our party opted to wear their sunglasses just to protect their eyes while watching others play. The location only has 1 bathroom, which is next to the shooting zone. So, if you are waiting in line during a match, there is a large probability that you will get hit (whether you are part of the party playing or not). The gel bullets move pretty fast & erratically - we found gel pellets in our curly hair for hours afterwards...a warning to anyone with textured styles. After driving & shooting, we were pretty warm. The place hasn't figured out ventilation & is generally warm. They do have air conditioning, but unless we stood directly below the vent - we were breaking a sweat. Here's the overall thing - I'm a Miami guy. I want to support small operations trying new things- even if they haven't quite figured it out yet. I like start ups, out-of-the-box labors of love. There are places that I haven't rated on Yelp bc I had a below average experience, but I felt that the proprietors were giving it their all. I'm not high maintenance - I don't need posh. And if this place had been in a non-gentrified area of town, I think I'd be okay. But, if you are going to spend money for go-karts & shooting games - I would regrettably suggest some place else.

The one thing they could have done better is actually have lights and a computer at the the packet pick up " It's 2012 and paper is dead " said Cecelia - she was right. We had to use our iPhone lights to help the staff. The other is to have the Medals table fully staffed for the whole event - I was in the last wave and had to go fish my own medal out of a box and many people did not get them because the staff already left - probably at Wet Willies. I will be doing this event again next year - I suggest you check it out. I am thinking UYE Sports event !!

Third, this did not earn five stars because they did not plan well for the packet pick ups; they were disorganized and unprepared for the large crowd. A friend of mine picked up my packet the day before, so I had to wait a long time for my team-members to pick up theirs. I finally got annoyed enough to force my volunteerism...yep..I went behind the table and helped them disseminate the packets. They struggled with finding names on a list, because...wait for it...no one thought to have lights at the tent for a night time event. Beside the above debacle ...this was so fun..and I actually improved in my time- even with a cold. I met lots of fun people and the music was great. I will recommend this for teams and veterans...first timers may feel a bit overwhelmed with running on the sand and the lack of cheerleaders on the path.

I was told this year's run was huge, and there were a lot more people than there were in 2013. I stood at the entrance of my office building and observed what looked like 5-10 minutes of nonstop throngs of compactly packed people running and walking on Biscayne Boulevard and beginning the 3.1 mile trajectory. After observing the different teams, some of which wore brightly colored tees, and cheering on our co-workers, another one of my co-workers (who also did not participate), my kid and I all headed for our corporate tent to patiently wait for our co-workers to finish and return. Slowly, they came back and we all sat at our tent, chatted, and ate some of the food we had brought on over. One of my co-workers brought his dog to the run, and his dog was a big hit with strangers of all kinds. Kids played with each other by the fountain and ran around all over the place so even my daughter was entertained. Some of the tents had professional caterers, chefs and the crepemakers making an appearance. If you work in this area, it's probably best to leave work very early (street closures begin at 2 p.m.) or just staying behind and enjoying the event, which is what I decided to do. One of my co-workers drove about 5 or 6 blocks, and it took her 45 minutes to do so and this was around 5:00-5:30. The crowds dispersed between 8 and 9, making driving a decent experience, although northbound Biscayne still remained closed. We left around 9, and there were still plenty of people behind, partying it up (some tents even had booze!). Weather was perfect, with a breeze. I may decide to walk the 3.1 miles next year as I enjoy walking, we'll see though, it's a year away, I have time to think about it.

West Palm Beach Marathon - 1.5 mins too fast for my pace at mile 20

This was the third time pacing the West Palm Beach Marathon but it is my first time reviewing it…read more It also happens to be my 80th career marathon. While I'm not racing the event I am running it as a pacer which essentially is maintaining a consistent split / mile and making it to the goal time which for me was 10:41 minutes/mile for 26.2 miles equates to a 4 hours 40 minute goal time. As an out of town pacer Marathonpacing.com paid for my Hotel at the Hilton, dinner at Brio, Tuscan Grill, and my registration fee was waived. Not bad! I also was eligible for a finisher medal and a free race shirt. However, one of the main reasons I pace a marathon is to give back to the running community. Helping runners achieve their individual running goals along the course. Providing motivation and experience. The pace team was up at 5am and greeting runners at the starting line at 5:30am. The race started at 6:15am. The full marathon is typically cooler but gets progressively warmer to the point of unbearablility. The race temps were in the high 60s and gradually got to the mid 70s. Because of the humidity it felt much warmer. The course for 2017 was new in that for the first time it crossed over to Palm Island. This was really cool! Sort of reminded me of Miami. Thankfully there was no flooding on the course either due to the King Tide. Another high light was a massive fire that ensued near the heat of down town WPB. Thankfully it was just a few blocks the race course and firefighters had it under control but it was cause for alarm. The race ran within 1/4 mile of half marathon so half marathoners who wanted to finish in 2:20 or less also followed me. After the half marathon mark the crowd thinned significantly and while there were relay runners who passed me there was not one person who stuck with me the whole race. So I continued to buckle down at 10:41 as I slowly passed some of the runners who were having a rough time on the course. At the finish line there were sandwiches and beer for running participants and plenty of sunshine to warm the intrepid soul. It was another fun time out in Palm Beach.

This course was an absolute nightmare because it got way too hot. See, I'm from the northeast and…read moreI'm thinking, "Gee, temperature is probably perfect at West Palm in December." Nope. I was shriveling up like a raisin 26.2 times. The start of the marathon was temperature perfect, but it got hot way too fast. The course is nice because you run on the street that borders the shore. It's a very flat course, it just loops around a lot so when you see people at their 15th mile passing you in the opposite direction when you're only at the humbling. And this happens all throughout the course. Runners keep asking each other when the turn around is. The expo was pretty lackluster. To be dim is whatever, but it was pretty much one of the least bustling ones I have been to next to Harrisburg. Two tips: 1. Don't run this unless you plan on finishing in less than 3 hours 2. Run this if you love the heat (80+ degrees, and that's just standing around) The first finisher was about 2 hours and 30 minutes, which is bad for a marathon. That's sub-elite time - that's how intense the heat was.
