We all have preconceived notions when we dine at an ethnic-themed restaurant. French restaurants are known for being swanky while the ambiance in a Chinese restaurant is typically boring, loud and down to earth. We walked into Mi Ranchito on a weekend, a bustling Mexican restaurante in Cotati, and whoa! It was festive, filled with merriment, mariachi music and singing. A great venue to party if I may say so! There was a continuous hustle and bustle around the front entryway as loads of college students, locals celebrating good times, Mexican families young and old streamed in and out.
They have a ton of space to accommodate large groups both indoors and outdoors and yet homely enough to have a private area with a fireplace. Colorful Mexican folk art adorned the walls. However, some of the fixtures starting with the front door looked out-dated. The tabletops and chairs are somewhat rickety, some booths may need to be reupholstered and new carpeting or at least a good shampooing may be necessary.
I am by no means a connoisseur of Mexican food and their pictorial menu was of tremendous help. So, seduced and lured by the pictures, Campechano ($14.75) was indeed eye catching. I didn't realize that it wasn't really a dinner but a seafood cocktail. I loved some of the goodies in there like shrimp, octopus and scallop. I'm guessing the juice in the seafood mix was prepared with limejuice, pico de gallo, tomato juice, avocado and onions. Presentation was beautiful and served in a hurricane glass. The verdict though was just so-so as I found the juice watered down, lacked depth and a tad sweet for a potential diabetic. I had to improvise by adding salsa to the concoction and even some pickled jalapenos and cilantro for more oomph! (3/5)
Campechano alone wasn't able to satiate my appetite fully that evening. That's the other reason for me being a potential diabetic! Fortuitously, my wife ordered an oversized dinner she couldn't finish. Fancy her ordering a huge Mojarra Frita ($13.95), which was a whole fried tilapia. I am not usually a fan of tilapia regardless how it is prepared.... whether Chinese style or Italian. Tonight, the dish came out so well presented with the whole fish deep-fried to perfection in a nice uniform golden brown. I was surprised it blew me off! So I might love tilapia Mexican style but I ate it my way. On a piece of flour tortilla, I slathered it with salsa mixed with pico de gallo, Mexican rice and refried beans, fresh guacamole and fired that up with some pickled jalapenos and last but not least, some pieces of tilapia on the very top! Who cares if I was doing it incorrectly? Imagine the symphony of flavors! I loved it! One of these tortillas comfortably appeased my hunger! (5/5)
My wife ordered a mango-blended margarita with salt on the rim. ($7.95) I am not into margaritas or tequilas and even less so a foo foo drink like a fruit blended alcoholic drink!
I have to admit it was a fun and pleasant evening although I haven't had a chance to sample too much of their menu. The menu was extensive and of course had all the usual suspects. Senorita Maria, our server, was very helpful to guide us through the myriad entrees knowing we were novices in this cuisine. Prices were more than reasonable, the vibe was festive and the food although not earth shattering was good enough to warrant a return visit soon! read more
