OK, still haven't stepped in this very busy, Chinese grocery store, but got to eat a birthday cake…read morepurchased from there. If one likes mangos, their mango strawberry cake is a dream. Costing under $60, the large cake was beautifully made and decorated. Like other Asian bakeries (e.g. Paris Baguette, Tous Les Jours, 85 C), the cake was chiffon with whipped cream and was quite good. But what made it stand out was how mango and strawberries were incorporated into the design AND how it tasted. Mangoes were thinly sliced and used like fondant to COVER the entire top of the cake. Then chopped mangos and whole strawberries were added on top to decorate it even more. Fondant is great to make the cake look good, but I don't like it as an edible product (it's like eating pure sugar for me). Ripe mango, on the other hand, I could eat all day...and this version was ripe without being overly so. The cake came well packaged in a travel container, and included a cake cutter, signage, and a candle. The four of us could barely make a large dent in it (maybe a 1/3), even though it didn't use buttermilk frosting, but used really good whipped cream instead. I think it's twice the size of a Tous Les Jour large (which is usually what our family gets for birthdays), and wasn't that much more.

When I asked an employee whether any vegetable bao were still available, she told me--clearly and confidently--that there were. I specifically questioned this, pointing to the "sold out" sign, yet she insisted that they were not sold out and proceeded to package four for me. When she handed me the box, I asked again--explicitly--whether these were vegetarian. For a third time, she assured me that they were. After a two-hour drive home, I opened the box to find that I had been given pork bao. This was not a minor oversight. I asked multiple times and received repeated, unequivocal assurances. At that point, this ceases to be a simple mistake and reflects either a complete disregard for accuracy or a willingness to mislead a customer to move product. Neither is acceptable. Customers rely on staff to provide correct information, especially when dietary preferences or restrictions are involved. The failure here was not just operational--it was a failure of basic honesty and accountability. This experience left me feeling violated, disrespected, and taken advantage of. It is extremely disappointing that such conduct can occur in a business that presents itself as reputable. One interaction like this is enough to severely damage trust in the store as a whole.

All of the wonderful foods that are produced. But the products and spices necessary to produce these unique dishes are not found in your typical Western-based grocery store. And often times, these products must follow strict religious sanitary rules. There must be a grocer that can carry these sundries to make your dish what you remember from home. In comes the International Food Bazzar! Located on the northern Kent border in the industrial park area, this deceptively large grocery holds products from the Middle East, India, Pakistan, and a few others representing South Asia. The store is Halaal certified, and for those looking for that regional specific product from that region, it is most likely here. Going in, I was not prepared for excitement that I felt walking when I walked in to find the spices and curries I was looking for but could easily not find in a western North America based grocery store. Even the frozen food section was a treat: frozen Naan bread, frozen Saag Paneer to take for lunch, and brands of 25 pound bags of basmahti rice. Let's not forget the busy butchery section preparing several Halal cuts for the long line of customers, all awaiting their turn to put their personal request in. It's a great relationship that is forged. As someone who wants to eat as authentically as possible without the America-substituted analogs, I have found joy in this place that can make my dishes shine the way they were intended. Visit the International Food Bazaar for your next shopping trip!

And often I have them clean it and then fry it. The fish depending on the size is typically cooked around ten minutes. I waited at the counter where they prep the food and saw my piece of fish in the fryer. I stood there for over 20 minutes before they finally took it out. When the lady finally gave me my fish, I looked at it and said it's over cooked. She didn't wanna talk to me so he had the other lady come over to talk to me. Instead of I'm sorry, let's fix it she gave me every reason in the book. It wasn't twenty minutes in the fryer. That's how people always ask for it to be done. And ending with it's not overcooked. I just took my fish and walked away. After paying for my groceries, I saw the store manager with one of the supervisors or managers and went over there. As I started to say my fish was over cooked, the store manager ran away instead of trying to help me. The lady pushed me off to someone else and said I need to talk to the seafood manager. One - I'm not gonna talk to a fourth person. Two - the seafood manager ain't responsible for the ladies cooking my fish for over twenty minutes. What had me so livid, is the absolute POOR ASS CUSTOMER SERVICE. Not one person attempted to rectify the situation and instead wanted to push me off to someone else. And the FACT that the STORE MANAGER ran off instead of fixing the situation really pissed me off. Sure, I'm one person and my dollars won't make a difference. But my voice will be heard and I will let everyone I know why they shouldn't spend their money there. There are many Asian stores in the area and with much better quality (especially when you compare the meat department). It's a review that should be a NEGATIVE TWENTY.
