They start you off with chips and salsa. The salsa was a slight upgrade from taco cabanas. At least the chips weren't stale. We had a chicharron Gordita, parilla azteca for one, and the tex mex burger. The Gordita, was awful. A traditional Gordita is a lot thinner, and it's a pocket that gets stuffed. The best description...it felt like two corn pancakes, overcooked to the point it felt like I was cutting a sandal. Why cut! Well when you try to pick it up to eat the traditional way, the Gordita itself is so dense and tough, it forcefully squeezes the filling out. The filling was chicharron ranchero, which was ok. They get kudos for using cracklings with some meat on them, but then lose all that cred by overcooking it. The burger..we were so confused. There was nothing "tex" or "mex" about it. I mean it was a dry patty, with very little seasoning, a burnt slice of hill county fare ham, and exactly three overcooked bacon slices. I kid you not that was literally it. Nothing pointed in either direction. The burger really upset me to the point I almost for the first time asked for a dish to be taken back, and not be remade. The kiddo said, I will take one for the team, and ate approximately 60% of it. The fries were also unsalted and soggy. The parilla, well they did use the correct cuts of meat, and they didn't use FUD sausage. Maybe why I decided on a 2 and not a 1. It was a decent portion for the price, and it was ok. The beans were fantastic. Best part of the meal. They then promptly reminded us why this bordered on a one by serving us, without a doubt, the worst corn tortillas in all of San Antonio and possibly the world. My son said it best, "you remember the time we tried to make healthy flour tortillas, and we laughed how bad they were, well I'd rather have that right now". No seasoning, dense, cardboard. Yep. It was affordable, yet not enough for us to come back!
