Ok, so I need to preface that in my teens and until I graduated college, I spent my summers working at a roadside ice cream and burger stand that was extremely popular. We served the standard chocolate and vanilla soft serve but also made our own alternative flavors of ice cream and frozen yogurts and had unlimited sundaes and shakes. My favorite was a fresh fruit banana split (strawberries, peaches and blueberries)...
that being said, this place could be so much more but I believe the ownership really has not idea of what to do with it. It starts with the archaic method for order taking; the menu board with the hand made signs with really small print makes the place look cheap; I ordered two of the mexihot hot dogs as a co-worker raves about them...they were ok...but they come with no side so I asked about fries. They do not have fries...I noticed they offer platters for various items so I asked what made the item a platter...the response was potato salad...interesting...in terms of a business strategy, I am not certain potato salad would be a smart move due to the varying types of potato salad and in food joint such as this one would thing fries would be a smarter move and perhaps offer potato salad for those who may not want fries...they are missing out on the world of fried food (pierogis, mozzarella sticks, corn dogs, corn dog battered choc covered strawberries, etc)...
I was asked if I wanted my hot dogs to go or for dine in...I got them dine in...they came on a paper plate...we seated ourselves in their dining room adorned with a nice carriage I presume was used back in the day for milk delivery...but again, the tables were a mess, paper placemats...one would suspect from the table setting that food would be served...it really seems like a wasted space...with that space do breakfast, a nicer lunch...again, you are serving hot dogs and hamburgers on paper plates...
So I decided to get some ice cream...I was excited to see a wet walnut sundae...I ordered a large (not sure why)...I asked the young man if this came with choc sauce as typically these are served with a choc sauce for color, not so much the flavor...he said no but I asked for it as well as whipped cream and a cherry...he asked if I wanted nuts (I was already getting wet walnuts???)...as I was waiting, I noticed the ice cream station (in fact the entire area where they make their sundaes...this area was destroyed...the kids were not cleaning the spindles or the machine off after making the shakes...one girl I presume was making a shake and I am guessing needed more ice cream, had turned around from the machine and started scooping more ice cream...she had taken the collar off from the shake cup and there was liquid running down the outside of the guests shake cup...a total lack of understanding of guest perception...
so I glanced back at my sundae...it was being made in a plastic banana boat dish but the vanilla ice cream was so melted that it was over flowing the dish...the young man put a paper plate under the dish and handed it to me...my wife indicated she thought a good number of the ice creams appeared to be melting...wondering if they were having an issue with their coolers...
anyhow, to the owners, if you read this, if you need to hire a restaurant consultant (I have 25 years in the industry), please let me know as you are sitting on a good spot and running on history but your place can be so much more... read more
