Enchilada platter served with rice and refried pinto beans. The enchiladas were filled with the al-pastor beef spiced just right.

After a morning at the Tilden Botanical Gardens and having ridden the train we were ready for lunch. A quick search on Yelp brought us to the Epicurious Garden for some Mexican food. The food was authentically good. The chips and salsa were an additional order. The pico, cilantro and onions were freshly cut. The chili sauce was spicy hot. The service was efficient and they assured that we received our full order. This was a multi counter establishment in the Epicurious garden.

My friends and I came around 5pm on a Saturday and the restaurant is located inside a food court. The food court was empty and had no wait. We walked around the area and it was very well cleaned and plenty of outside seating and most were shaded. Metered Parking could tough on Shattuck but you can find parking on the side streets. Ordered the $9.75 sautéed tofu burrito and watched them make the food in front of me. They prepared the burrito with rice, beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, and sour cream, the sauce that was used to sautéed the tofu was amazing. The whole burrito was overall 10/10. Every bite was like flavorful, full, saucy, and tofu just melts in your mouth. It came with chips and salsa which were both fresh! The chips were crispy and thick. Salsa also pairs well with the burrito.

IMO this is considered a skinny mini burrito. Meant for a child. The circumference is barely bigger than a standard 24oz water bottle. I didn't see nor taste any cheese in this "bean rice and cheese burrito." When I questioned the staff, none of them offered to address or fix the discrepancy at all. I can pay $2 more at a chipotle to have unlimited toppings (except guacamole) and double up on everything. Chipotles burrito will be like 2-3 meals depending on how much you eat. Mexicana's burrito was literally an appetizer or snack--- didn't fill me up at all.

Lovely people served me up a great meal. I wandered into this food hall and ordered a Chile relleno. It was delicious. A perfect Chile, excellent level of spice stuffed with good cheese and topped with a tangy red sauce and a light breading. The beans were smooth AF too. Beautiful back garden patio. A chill dining oasis. I would love to go back and try a breakfast burrito. Best staff, chill vibes and tasty food.

Restaurants like this truly make North Berkeley seem like its own small community. After going to Mexicana several times a month, I took a hiatus. The staff still remembered me when I returned. I always get a simple rice and beans burrito with guacamole and sour cream. Without any salsa, it can taste a little dry. Pour a ton of salsa over it and wow! Pretty darn good. Next time, I'll probably ask for extra guac and sour cream. Friendly staff, cute garden seating, complimentary chips and salsa, and sizable portions -- all reasons to give Mexicana a try!

    Our delicious meal!

Mexicana is a local take out spot in the Epicurious Garden in Berkeley. The food is always fresh, healthy and from scratch. From the tacos, burritos, freshly made house corn tortillas and salsas- everything is delicious! It is a family run business and the owner Noe is so kind, cheerful and welcoming. He remembers my whole family each time we come which is weekly these days :) His service goes above and beyond and not something you often find these days. If you live with food allergies or dietary requirements, this place is a gem. Everything is listed clearly on the menu-displayed on the tv above the counter for full transparency! Many gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian and dairy -free options. All the food is nut-free. It is so special to have this place in Berkeley- make this your new regular spot! Support Noe and his lovely family- he puts so much care into his food- you won't regret it and neither will your belly :)

We are in search of a Baja fish taco that is satisfying since both of the places we loved either closed or stopped serving the baja style. We went to Mersea earlier for the views and to check out TI and it was uninspiring so we rambled back to the east bay and decided to try Mercado. Reviews looked good (thanks y'all, I appreciate you) and despite a few misses on the baja taco (according to some reviews) we decided to take a run at it. The man was feeling jaded after the am stop and wasn't going for the fish, I stayed neutral...no one wants their little taco loving heart broken twice in one day...ultimately, he decided to try the fish taco plate with 1 baja and one grilled. I had the poblano mole tacos w/chicken. We shared the guacamole with chips. I had cafe de olla (it is called something else here) and he had the mocktail with the ginger beer. The ordering at the counter wasn't my favorite but the spot was pretty quiet for a Friday midday and the service was still exceptional. They were attentive and responsive. I would definitely go back at the same time cuz I don't like crowds. On to the food. Dayum! Everything was good. Well seasoned, beautifully plated, and sufficient serving size. I pigged out. For real...I waddled out of that joint. Brought every drop of the leftovers home so I could have the chocolate custard (DAYUM) for dessert with the remnants of my coffee. Him: he preferred the baja style to the grilled fish. As some others have said, it can fall apart (really stuffed with goodness) but he didn't want his fixins on the side. VERDICT: he'll be back for that taco. Me: I enjoyed the mole but the chicken in chunks didn't work for me. I would have preferred it shredded. I'll try something else next time and there will be a next time. Oh, and the black beans and green rice were flavorful as well. Standing order: guacamole and chips Cafe Chocolate custard... What? No pics? Come on now. I wasn't thinking 'bout y'all when my food came. Go take your own pics.

My party ordered the verde enchiladas, vegetarian burrito, platanos, and flan. Enchiladas - filled with chicken and the sauce was spicy. However, it wasn't very flavorful, just hot. The rice and beans were very disappointing. Bland and the cheese on the beans was cold, stiff, and clumped. Vegetarian burrito - Delicious! No complaints. Platanos - Served over refried beans with a super unappetizing sauce splashed on top. The taste was just okay but I've had better. Flan - definitely a different texture than the average flan. Overall, it wasn't something to drive home about but it was cool. Overall, the lunch wasn't bad but it wasn't great nor was ti worth almost $80. I may come back to try the tacos, which seem to be a top seller, but I'll hold off on anything else.

Both were excellent and paired very well with their salsa. Carne asada was cooked and cut perfectly, and tasted much better than when I had it in burritos in the past. Al pastor is very authentic and tastes better than most you can find in the area. Generous amount of onions (and some pineapple for the pastor). I really really enjoyed this, and I'm happy to have this option here in my neighborhood. Only negative is that their tortillas seem to collapse under the general sauciness. I usually prefer to have my salsa on the side, so maybe that's on me. Came out to about $15 for the three tacos which is pretty pricey. However, you do get some chips and salsa for free, and the quality of the food is pretty high. I'm reasonably happy to pay this price to support a nice establishment in my community. The place is clean and recently renovated, with a fairly friendly staff willing to accommodate customizations and requests. I will probably start coming here a lot more regularly after this most recent visit!

It has a unique menu, delicious food, and a trendy ambiance. Because she decided on this place the day of, she couldn't get a reservation but we showed up at 6 pm on a Thursday and had a table for five inside by 6:30. We waited at the bar and had drinks including a spectacular paloma-esque and local beer on tap. I can't have dairy but the chef made modifications on the duck enchiladas rojas. Everything was a flavor bomb in the best way except the duck had bones inside the enchiladas which made me think it was chicken thigh (looked the same). The rest of the guests loved their plates but we found the sizes of the plates odd. For example, the Mexican street corn was a huge plate of about 3 ears of corn but the tamal was just one tamal (for $15!) The service was very attentive despite a busy restaurant. They automatically charge a 20% service fee regardless of size of group. I appreciated that they didn't rush us out but I didn't like that they charged us for the birthday flan.
