My son, daughter, and I visited Mexican Sugar while I'm in town visiting Dallas. My son ordered the GRILLED CHICKEN & CARNE ASADA fajitas, my daughter had Barbacoa tacos, and I ordered the Roasted Chicken enchiladas. Since my son's fajitas came out on the sizzling skillet, his food was hot and he really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, my daughter's tacos and my enchiladas were both cold when they were served. At first, the waitress was only going to take my dish back, but once my daughter mentioned her tacos were cold too, the waitress got the manager involved. I really appreciated how the manager handled the situation. He immediately came over, apologized, and had both dishes remade right away. On top of that, he removed both meals from our bill, which was very appreciated. The customer service and how the manager handled the issue definitely made a difference. Overall, the restaurant was okay, but personally, I don't think I would return. read more

First time at mexican sugar and it was amazing! We didn't have a reservation so we waited a good 20-25 minutes on a sunday night around 6 pm. Food was really good and I love the interior. Complimentary chips and salsa- their salsa is chunky and it's really good! Has lots of flavor. We ordered their marinated shrimp appetizers, mesquite grilled chicken, and their brasas tacos. Loved all the things we ordered and even had leftovers, but that was probably because we had a late lunch so we were already partially full lol. Overall, it was a great experience. The restaurant is huge! So many places to sit, and all the tables were full. That says a lot. Probably better to reserve so you get seated quickly. First time coming to Mexican sugar for dinner and for the most part it was great! Only caveat was our waiter was very hard to get a hold of during the entirety of service. Well I had the chance to come back here again unannounced due to 9 months ago we had less than par service. I am not the person who looks for a free meal or to just complain,so we decided to give them another chance! I believe in my heart everyone needs to be treated the same, with good if not exceptional service. My review is slightly biased since I consider this more of a vibe place - great views, patio, electric atmosphere. I'm not crazy about the food but I am interested in it. Loved my visit to Mexican Sugar! I came in on a Monday evening and there were quite a few patrons, but the service was fast and our waiter was friendly and attentive. We basically came for drinks and to yap, but were tempted to order food after munching on the free chips and salsa the waiter brought out. So, we ended up ordering the arepas and they were warm, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. We also ordered the churros and they were crisp and comforting, and the chocolate avocado cake was rich, moist, and surprisingly light. Had to come back to this exceptional Mexican restaurant. We arrived around 5:30 and thought we had a reservation but turns out the reservation date was incorrect. The host at the stand was kind enough to get us seated, though since we were only a party of two. I will say they do have a happy hour here that seems to be very well attended and they have enough space that they were housing several large groups. We watched no less than three busfuls of people drop off and go into the restaurant as we seated outside. Our server was absolutely attentive and just a joy. I tend to drink a lot of water and she was kind enough to just leave a container of it at our table so that I could serve myself. I chose the Adobe steak salad for my entrée. The steak was perfectly cooked and the Adobe sauce/seasoning on it was very good. The salad itself was a little bit smaller than I expected, but overall, I thought the portion size was good since I wasn't terribly hungry. If I would've been more hungry, I definitely would've thought the portion size was too small. My coworker who was with me, got the Seabass, and she said the fish was cooked absolutely perfectly. I came on a Friday afternoon for happy hour appetizers and drinks with friends on the outdoor patio. I ordered a Classico margarita which was nice, I tasted my friends hibiscus margarita which was very good and refreshing. I always hear nice things about the margaritas here so we wanted to try them out and that will probably be the only thing that would bring us back. The warm table salsa is just okay. I ordered queso blanco with added chorizo and it came separate which was a little odd to me but not a problem. The queso did not have chips though so we did have to ask the waiter to refresh the chips for the salsa. Im not sure if he just forgot or what. No big deal though. I do wish the queso was served in something that retains heat better because it got cold SO FAST. It wasn't super flavorful either but not bad either. One friend ordered a fajita quesadilla and she enjoyed it. My other friend took the waiters advice and ordered the marinated shrimp and she said it was just okay but she wouldn't order it again. Mexican Sugar never disappoints! The service is always great--attentive without being overbearing--and the vibe is warm and welcoming. The food and drinks are consistently on point, but the star of the show for me is their chicken enchiladas. So flavorful, perfectly seasoned, and easily some of the best I've had anywhere. We just came here for a late lunch only a couple others in the restaurant and the hostess was not nice and never made eye contact. We got a really nice waiter and I mean really nice who was awful. Never checked on us and took forever to come take our order. The food was awful. Chips were stale and their salsa tasted like bbq sauce. The queso was grainy. I got the steak tacos and the tortillas was too thick but fell apart. The steak has no flavor at all. Just a bad meal with horribly nice service. The salsa was medium but was a little too tomato-y for me. The chips were perfect-thin and crisp. I was able to sub out my rice for green beans that were cooked perfectly. I came here for dinner with a large group of coworkers a couple weeks ago and was really looking forward to it. A big portion of our table ordered fajitas, which typically come out on a hot, sizzling skillet. Unfortunately, none of ours were sizzling -- they were barely warm and seemed like they had been sitting out before being brought to the table. I ordered the seafood skillet with scallop, and it was especially disappointing. It's hard to enjoy seafood when it's served cold, and the tortillas were cold as well. The menu descriptions made everything sound flavorful and exciting, but once the food arrived, it felt like something was missing. Overall, the dishes were bland and lacked the seasoning and depth we expected. Another thing that stood out was the lack of bean options. For a Mexican restaurant, it was surprising that the only choice available was black beans. Offering at least one or two additional options, like pinto or refried beans, would make the menu feel more complete and authentic. I really hope the restaurant can improve consistency with food temperature and flavor, because the concept and menu have a lot of potential. We celebrated my birthday at this restaurant with my family. We arrived at 4:30 on a Sunday afternoon, and the restaurant wasn't busy, so we expected attentive service. The food was excellent, and that's the reason I'm giving more than one star. Unfortunately, the service did not match the quality of the food. Our waitress was inattentive throughout the meal. After our appetizers, she never cleared the table to make room for our main course. Other servers ended up bringing both our appetizers and our entrées because she was nowhere to be found. Eventually, the manager noticed our table was still cluttered and came over to clear it himself. I even had to ask him to find our waitress so we could get the check. The final frustration came with my child's meal. I ordered a kids' Coke, and the waitress told me it came in a can, so I said that was fine. When the bill arrived, I noticed I had been charged extra for the drink. When I questioned it, she explained that only fountain drinks are included with the kids' meal--not canned drinks. That information should have been explained when I placed the order so I could have made an informed choice. Instead, all I received was a quick "Oh, sorry." The food was truly delicious, but the poor service put a damper on what was supposed to be a special birthday celebration. I hope the restaurant addresses these service issues because the kitchen is doing a great job. read more

I took my wife here the weekend after Valentine's Day since we weren't able to get in on Valentine's itself. Even though the place looked almost empty about 2pm, they told us it was reservations only, so we came back the following Saturday. Overall, it was a pretty good experience. My wife ordered the chicken enchilada flight and I had the carne asada tacos, and they both were good. The La Katrina margarita was excellent in flavor, but it was mostly ice and not much margarita for the price. I also tried the Mangonada margarita, which was just okay. We also got the queso Blanco, which was good and the a lot on the side, which was excellent. We'll probably give it another try to sample more items on the menu, but I can't say it's the best we've had. That said, our waitress was exceptional and really stood out with her service. Parking wasn't great. We later found out that the spaces marked "retail only" and "valet" are actually open to use since they don't offer valet service. It would have been nice to know that beforehand! For two people with tip came out to about $120. Could've had a lot better for around $75 at our other favorite place Gloria's where we normally go. read more

Needs Work Got all excited for our visit to Mexican Sugar. Dropped my wife off and I looked for a place to park. I entered the restaurant to find the hostess studying her computer. I asked if she could direct me to the lady that just came in for a table. She barely acknowledged me and went back to her computer. Not great. Oh, she was chompimg on gum. (Not a great image to present). I said I would find her. We waited a bit for some service (the place was busy). Ordered a coke and a Margarita. 5 mintues later the coke arrived. No sign of the Margo. 10 mins later Margo showed. It was pretty good so I was hopeful. Server took our order. 20 mins later 1 dish showed up out of three ordered. It was luke cool. Server apologized and said he would get on it right away. 15 mins 1 more dish showed. At this point I gave up. I asked our server to give us a check for what we had and we would be on our way. Mgr came over and apologized. I like the restaurant, I like the margaritas. But the place has organizational problems. Clearly it is not being run very well. They should train their staff better, get a better workflow for the kitchen. We will go back and try again-ONCE. If it is like this, then never again. Ambiance-great. Drinks-great. Three meals over three months, zero out of three visits. I tried the chicken brasas tacos, the pork al pastor tacos, and some enchiladas (beef, I think). The meat in both taco plates was overcooked, dry and tough, and very little of it. The enchiladas were so spicy I couldn't taste much of anything else. Each time she was past by our table she would see how far we were with our meal. She even encouraged our server to check on us and try to rush us.. Overall the food was yummy! I got a mezcal flight. We all finished our food. The ceviche app was different from what I'm used to, it seemed to have more of a Peruvian / Colombian or something. Overall very flavorful and I ate it all.
