We came here after finishing mini golf across the street at Pirate's Cove. It was a beautiful afternoon on a weekday. It wasn't busy as it was early afternoon. We sat out on the patio which has a nice view of the water. It feels set back away even though it's right off a busy road. I tried the watermelon margarita and my partner had don Julio on the rocks. It comes in a shaker with fresh lime juice. Excellent choice! I'd recommend giving it a try if you like tequila! The watermelon margarita was very sweet, next time I'd go for their original margarita instead. We had the chips and guacamole. Shrimp and veggie quesadilla, which tasted really fresh and good. This was our afternoon snack so we didn't dig much deeper into the menu but I'd say this place is worth a visit if you want a cute patio, and a good drink! Especially if you happen to be across the street at mini golf. The mini golf score book has a coupon on the back of one of the pages for a buy one get one drink! read more

This was my first time eating at this restaurant but my wife has been going here for about 8 years. Unfortunately it wasn't the best experience. We ordered a smothered steak burrito and it came out incorrectly made. However the waiter quickly brought it back to have the cooks correct it. Then when it came back out as you notice in the picture, there was no steak in it. I brought it up to the mangers attention and she quickly resolved it by comping both steak burritos and personally ordering me a quesadilla to go. The margarita was solid. The food was very mediocre Mexican food. It was worse this year than last year but the view is still beautiful. We went around 5pm and there weren't many people which made the service really good. The grilled chicken tacos tasted pretty fresh, but the rice and beans wasn't very good. The nachos with guacamole were ok but not enough cheese, and they forgot the sour cream. We ended up taking home the leftovers. The chips are ok but the salsa wasn't good at all. They only offer one round of complimentary chips and salsa. Last year they had half off appetizers but none was offered this year, so my guess is that they no longer offer it. Also, they had live music last year, but there wasn't any this time. Maybe we came on an off day but I kinda prefer the experience last year compared to this year. read more

Stopped here after a boat tour for a Marg and apps. I ordered the guac and chips as we were told all apps were half off for happy hour. Then the bill came and apparently even though I clarified before ordering, THAT app was not half off, so she refused to make it half off. The margs were weak too. I wanted to love this place as they have a nice view of the water and a nice out odor patio but we won't be back. read more

Absolutely awful, we stopped by recently on Fourth of July we ordered the same drinks but somehow they looked completely different and tasted different too my husbands drink was cloudy and had a white film over it like the cup was dirty or even the ingredients used have been expired that's what it looked like. I ordered the taco plate and the tortillas were just falling apart they were soggy and they had just brought the plate to me , how can they be that soggy so soon. The manager said the drink looks different because they used the orange drink instead on something else but that doesn't explain the white residue on the cup . Oh I would like to add how after everything they took the plate and wanted to remake it but I just opted for a burger at that point I was in a bad mood and wanted to leave they did offer the burger on the house and didn't charge us for the drink we had returned or the taco plate so thank you for that. But overall an unnecessary step if the drinks and food were made correctly the first time. read more

Based on the manager's comment, I would like to retain my original review and add: management's attitude and customer service: also bad. Note: Labor Day weekend in the Dells was rainy, and not at all busy. Manager's irate comment below is full of excuses: it was "crazy busy" is purely false - we were able to choose a table right next to the window because there were so few other patrons around us. So I'll say this: the view was good. :) The service, customer service, food, and now, also the management: bad. It does not matter if the shrimp was cooked fresh to order if it smelled like last night's cat food (read between the lines: consider purchasing higher quality flash-frozen foods, if you must, and ensure food is not near its expiration before serving to clientele. Make sense?). Moreover - why does the manager place the burden back on the patron to complain, when the logical expectation is that food is cooked well the first time? To be honest, based on the shoddy quality of the ingredients and the cooking itself (and the absolute lack of any and all spices, which is alarming if the manager blames spices for poor taste), I cannot begin to count how many iterations of sending back the food I would have to sit through before the quality was anywhere near palatable. And finally, addressing the manager's concerns over honest, albeit poor, reviews on public outlets: that is the price of restaurant ownership and client stewardship! Not everyone gets a shiny gold star for effort, or simply because they'd like one. I have driven by this restaurant several times and decided to give it a try. What a GREAT location. They seated me with a tremendous view of the river. I ordered the Mexicali tacos. All were delicious and I was given a choice to have corn tortillas. The food was really good but the service was even better. Anna Diana C. was very attentive throughout my meal but never intrusive. She made sure my meal was 'ok' and kept my water glass full. I am glad I stopped in. read more

Came in for drinks after doing the pirates cove mini golf course. They give you a bogo deal for a drink. Decent area but pretty nice view of the river by the window. There's also outdoor seating. They give you free chips and salsa. read more

This place is great, the margaritas are wonderful. The staff is amazing the kids were a bit noisy but they were so nice about it. The reason I gave them 4 stars is because we had to wait 20 minutes for being noticed at all, when we got our nachos which came on a fairly small platter they were cold not even the slightest bit warm, and extra crispy practically burnt. read more

Should've read the reviews before hand. Oh well. This place is alright. What it lacks in quality of food, makes up in the scenery and patio. Thankfully it was nice out, so we chose to sit on the patio. Nice view of the lower dells. The smell of dead fish and brown foam from the jet boats not so great, but like that they had a patio. Service was alright. Just the right amount of attentive. Food tastes very Wisconsin Dells, if that makes any sense. It was just kind of bland,lacked pizazz, flavor and authenticity. The chips were dull and the "spicy" green salsa that came out was this creepy green blob. Rice was pretty good. Not a place I would rush back to food wise, but the scenery and patio are nice options. read more

Had a great meal here last month when passing through the Dells. Restaurtant did great job accommodating us in COVID safe way on patio. Food came out very quickly and was great! Our server (Slobodan D.) was amazing! Haven't seen a waiter work as hard to deliver a great experience, make you feel important and valued as a customer in long time. Very conscientious, friendly and personable. Personally I think he should be given a raise and a promotion - manager level performance, truly! I was genuinely impressed. If I had any business and need for a strong performer or leader, I'd be hiring him away! Anyway, patio had music from the bar, great seating and I was able to wait at our table on the patio and just hang out after the meal for rest of my group to return after a Dells boat ride, situated right next to the restaurant. Our server and other staff did great periodically checking with me if I needed anything - but didn't make me feel like I should leave. We will be back next time passing through WI! (Gave restaurant 4/5 only because there's always ways to improve. Our server - a solid 5/5 since 10/5 isn't possible ;-)) read more

Very good Mexican food. We came in from Chicago and stayed at the Wisconsin Dells hotel Chula Vista. The staff was great. The large Margherita was pretty big, so for all the lightweights out there, be careful. The chips and salsa at the beginning had great salsa. read more

Are you going for spicy, homemade and/or authentic food? No? Good, because you won't get that here. But, if you're going for the atmosphere, price, location, something the kids will eat, etc., then you'll be fine. My carnitas was *only* pork. As in, no seasonings at all. I don't even think salt was involved. The chips were from the store, and the salsa was crushed tomatoes and a couple of other vegetables for decoration. Again, no seasoning, no heat, not even salt. Taco Bell at least has generic seasonings. Food-wise, this is for your cousin who thinks paprika is hot. But the thing is, I suspected this going in, so I can't get mad. Everything else was fine- service, including giving us utensils for our leftovers (for the hotel room, natch), was very good. Everyone was attentive and wore masks. Seating was social distanced. Wonderful view. Good parking. And a good amount of cinnamon in my horchata, which other places tend to not add any. (So they do know what flavor is. They just choose not to.) So maybe this is more of a cocktail place than dinner. Unless your cousin and kids are in tow. read more

It's a great view, nice servers, but the food is horrible. If you're looking for real mexican food this isn't the place. the food tastes bad-if it even had a taste- . The queso with chorizo was watery, the fajitas were really dry, the tamales had very little meat and tasted like mashed potatoes. The al pastor tacos tasted like cologne. I could go on and on, but overall I do NOT recommend this place. I would've rather gone to Taco Bell. read more

The restaurant has a pretty view but is otherwise very average. We started with chips and guacamole + salsa and margaritas. The chips, salsa, and margs were all fine, but the guacamole was good. The shrimp diablo dish sounded better on paper than it was. It was as spicy as advertised but their wasn't much flavor beyond the spice. The service was kind but a bit slow. read more

I am not a fan of food in the Dells. That Moose pizza place makes cold leftover frozen pizza look good. So I had no expectations going in. It was solid. We came early so there was outdoor river seating open. But my kids got cold and the waitress brought them blankets. The food was solid, Midwest, Mexican fare. Large portions and not bad. First of all, let me address the complaints about how authentic this restaurant is. Mexicali Rose serves "Americanized" Mexican food and this isn't a bad thing. There are a ton of Mexican restaurants that go this route. Think of it as Mexican inspired/based and if you're going to complain about how authentic it is - really? You're upset because it isn't authentic enough? You're in Wisconsin Dells. You can get plenty of truly authentic Mexican in places like Milwaukee and Chicago. Looking at many of the reviews, it looks like experiences are related to how busy the restaurant it. I've eaten at Mexicali Rose several times, but it has never been busy when I've been there. I can imagine that it can get pretty hectic. Anyway, here's my review of my experience this past Saturday. We had a great time. The restaurant itself is clean and has a fun atmosphere. We ate outside and had a wonderful view of the Wisconsin River and the historic Kilbourn Dam. It was especially beautiful as the sun was going down. We had a great server. He was very friendly and very attentive. I like the fact that they have handheld devices to take orders. This cuts down on mistakes and when it's time to pay - you can pay right then and there. The food was good. Nobody went away hungry. I won't say it was the best Mexican inspired food that I've ever had, but it was good. The chips were definitely "store bought" but so what. We ate and enjoyed them. I'm vegetarian and my girlfriend is vegan and they had plenty of tasty options. In fact, there was a veggie option for just about everything on the menu. I have vegetarian enchiladas and they were really tasty. Getting back to our server, he was very helpful in regards to our dietary restrictions. He knew that the refried beans were made with chorizo and suggested that we swap them out for black beans. He also checked on the rice for us and discovered that they were made with chicken stock, but he had them replaced with a very tasty cilantro lime rice. Our kids had a great time. They have a decent kids menu that is highlighted by a selection of mocktails. They were over the moon because they could get a kid's strawberry margarita!! It's a small thing, but it really added to their experience and I'm sure they'll remember it for years to come (and will ask to go back the next time we're in the Dells). The food was also very decently priced. We did not feel like we were being gouged (which is all too common in the Dells). In fact, we were pleasantly surprised when we got the bill. I do recommend this restaurant. My guess is that when they get busy the service might suffer, but when we were there the service was great, the atmosphere was fun, the prices were right, and the food hit the spot. Seriously, the Dells are full of places where you can get crummy, overpriced food. Mexicali Rose is not one of those spots and it's worth a stop. read more

I cannot believe that this restaurant served me a delicious meal. With it being right in the heart of all that is corny about the Dells, I was expecting utter crap. But, I was pleasantly surprised. The first table we sat at was being dripped on from some duct overhead, but the hostess immediately found us a new table. There's a nice view of the dam and river, which is probably even nicer from their outdoor patio. Our waiter was great, very friendly and attentive, and Portuguese. You don't see a lot of Portuguese waiters in the Dells. The chips were sub-par, the salsa was pretty good (it's better if you mix some hot into the mild), and the margaritas were very drinkable (if not mind-blowing). I had a pain in the ass-type of order, requesting that the green chile vegetarian burrito be made into a chimichanga. But they were happy to accommodate me, and it was surprisingly delicious. The rice and beans were acceptable. Really, give this place a try. I will definitely return on my next visit to the area. read more

Great looking restaurant with a unique view. The chorizo con caso was like water with there being very little chorizo considering it's an up charge. The tamale had hardly any meat even though it was quite large. The fajita came out with no sizzle and the vegetables were hardly cooked.
