    Burrito (Regular) - Pastor
    Jeff L.

I don't know what kind of love and magic they are putting in these burritos but they are some of the best tasting burritos I've ever had! Not kidding!! Found myself deep in the valley & needed a quick lunch so I turned to Yelp and low and behold, I was just down the street from this wonderful 5-star find. It's a yellow food truck located in front of Vons on Mason at the corner of Devonshire. I got the Regular burrito ($12) which is a regular flour tortilla filled with choice of meat (I got pastor - marinated pork), rice, beans, onions, cilantro & salsa...and it is so delicious and amazing! It was stuffed with meat and they made it to order pretty fast. I expected a 5 star meal and this exceeded my expectations! - just what the doctor ordered for a quick on-the-go lunch!

This place should have a long line. Tacos are delicious and authentic. First time trying it definitely going back for more.

One of the frustrating aspects of living in Santa Monica is the longer drive to the Mexcla food truck. My friend, Ivan, is part of talented family who has covered the west valley with a store, a restaurant, and, now, a food truck, for over a generation. You can't miss his brightly painted truck!

I am beating myself up for not trying Mexcla sooner!!!! I live around the corner from this truck, but I always found myself going to the Epic Taco Truck in the same parking lot--mostly because Mexcla never came up on Yelp or any of my other searches. But now that I finally stopped by, I'm wowed at how good this spot is! This is my new favorite taco truck and it's not even close. The carne asada is delicious, the chicken is super juicy, and the al pastor is other worldly. The tortillas are soft and flavorful and both salsas are delicioussss with a great amount of spice. There are tacos I enjoy in Chatsworth, but when I really want to go in, I'm used to driving 15-20 minutes for some of my favorite spots. Now, I have a place right in my backyard that I will definitely be returning to over and over again. Seriously, if you're at all debating, eat at Mexcla! Bomb food, good prices, and independently owned. Can't ask for anything more.

    Gorditas

Man this was such a euphoric experience for my taste buds. I ordered two gorditas, 1 chicharon rojo, and one cabeza. Amazing! From all the taco trucks out in the valley, this is a top notch spot. Super clean, super friendly, and most importantly such good flavor! I would call in if you are going to order Gorditas or anything fried as it takes about 10 minutes to make. Other than that, nothing but positives and wishing this food truck success! This isn't your usual taco truck, this is elevated Mexican food at a fair price. Highly HIGHLY recommend you stop by. You won't regret it.

Fast, clean, tasty tacos. The tacos are only $2.50 ea and are so flavorful. It's better than the night tacos by the Vons there.

I came for lunch Friday afternoon around noon with 3 others and it was pretty busy as it was peak lunch time. You can tell it's a popular spot. You order at the counter first and then get a spot. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, but it was super windy the day we came, so no one was sitting outside. I got the Alex burrito without cheese and sour cream for $13.25. Asked for a recommendation for the meat and was told their al pastor is really good, so I went with that. I liked that they call you as they're making your burrito, so you can customize it further (which kind of salsa, onions and cilantro, do you want it cut in half, etc.). As a picky eater, I really appreciated that. We all got burritos, and one friend paid an extra 3 bucks to make it wet. Chips come on the side, and you can help yourself to salsa at their fresh salsa bar. This is the first taqueria I can remember that has a mild tomato salsa without raw onion and very little cilantro. I was excited to see that finally there's a salsa I can eat. My Alex burrito was one of the best burritos I've had imo. The proportion of meat to beans to rice was perfect and the rice tasted great. The al pastor was amazing: super flavorful and smoky. I usually feel like most burritos taste about the same to me, but I definitely found myself enjoying this one more than usual, which says a lot. Also, they're generously sized here. I wasn't able to finish mine despite my best efforts and packed the last quarter to bring home for dinner. I'd like to end my review by mentioning how polite and friendly everyone was, from the guy taking our order to the guy making the food. I was really impressed by this as well, since taquerias usually aren't exactly known for their service. I can't wait to come back!

My new favorite Mexican spot on the west side of the valley!…read more Love this place! I should preface my review by saying that I only leave Yelp reviews if I really loved, or really hated somewhere (be it a restaurant/bar/store/hotel/whatever). Luckily Chavela's is somewhere that I love!! Chavela's was previously "661 Tijuana Tacos", which my wife and I tried once and didn't enjoy. We went back to give them a 2nd chance, but they still sucked, so we didn't go back again. Around 6 months ago, we noticed that there was a new sign up, so we went in to check it out. Thank god, this was a whole new restaurant with new owners, a new cook, and a new menu! (and not just a rebranding of the old place). We decided to try them and OMG, they're FUCKING AMAZING! Pretty much everything appears to be made from scratch, in-house, from the tortillas to the chips, salsas & guacamole. Since that first visit my wife and I have ordered takeout probably 10 times and have never been disappointed. Customer service is excellent, with friendly cashiers both in-person & over the phone, the inside of the restaurant is clean and well laid out, the menu is simple & easy to read, and their "salsa bar" has a good selection of always freshly made salsas, stays well stocked, and is never too messy. We also appreciate the pricing. Chavela's is about 20% cheaper than another local scratch kitchen Mexican spot, that my wife and I loved, but had to stop ordering take-out from because they were just too damn expensive. Here are my recommendations from Chavela's: - Birria anything! Their birria is PHENOMENAL. And their consomme is *chef's kiss*. One of our favorite things to order (and great hangover food) is their birria quesataco combo + consomme to dip the tacos in. Lots of places that have birria & consomme make the consomme super, super salty, and if they're reheating & re-using it, it makes it saltier and saltier each time. Chavela's makes their consomme in the morning, and when it runs out, consomme is done for the day. If there's any left at the end of the day, it goes home with team members. They don't reuse/recycle consomme to the next day! I also love their birria soft tacos and the birria quesadilla. - Asada & al pastor soft tacos. Soft, tender meats with tons of flavor (onions, cilantro, salsa) on homemade tortillas. What more do you need! Vampiros. FIRE!!! Try them yourself and refute me. I dare you! - Tortas. I've only tried their Cubano torta so far, but it was fantastic (and huge). - Chips & Guacamole. All made in-house, with tons of flavor in the guac, and just the right amount of salt on the chips. My ONLY complaints are that they don't do machaca, so we can't get machaca & eggs or machaca burritos, they don't make albondigas soup, and they don't have any kind of customer rewards program or something along the lines of frequent customer cards, etc. Fingers crossed they'll add all these things in the future! Overall, Chavela's is a great Mexican restaurant that is well worth spending your money at!

I'll usually go…read moreto a taco truck when I'm craving tacos but I have been wanting to try this place as I drive by it often. So much regret. So I ordered over the phone for pickup. When I got to the restaurant it was crap parking, and not inviting at all inside. But I kept a positive attitude and got instead, no greeting from the girl. I smiled and said hi to the girl working and she literally just stared at me with the coldest face. I paid for my food and said thank you and again not a smile, not a wave, nothing from anyone. Okay so most important - the food. Firstly, I got the asada fries. The fries were cooked decent but there was just no flavor at all. It also was cold and clumpy as if it'd been sitting a while which was odd bc I got there 10 min after ordering and ate it no more than 10 min later. Then I got 2 plain asada tacos for my kids - so dry and over cooked. The tortillas over powered the meat for all of the tacos, very thick and just not good. And the asada meat was like the end meat in a party tray, just all the burnt bits. Then I got pastor tacos, these weren't as dry but didn't taste like typical pastor tacos. Not impressive but probably the better out of the entire order. Which isn't saying much. Lastly and most upsettingly, it was raining today so I was craving some Birria tacos. Which is what I ordered for myself. When I got them it was not Birria. I asked the girl and she said it's Barbacoa which is the same thing. It was not the same thing. The meat was again super dry, not saucy at all, and just stuck in between regular dry tortillas. Such a letdown. Not one of these dishes had flavor, like not even salt, and the 2 salsa options were very basic also. Definitely will not go back. Also the radishes to go were not fresh in the slightest.

Came in a little after 11, not very busy (The Vineyards tend to get very busy later in the day on weekends) I order a Spicy Watermelon Passion Fruit Agua Fresca - it was good, but the Watermelon was so overwhelming it was hard to taste the passionfruit. My mom had the breakfast tacos (not pictured) which she liked a lot, I had the avocado toast and added ahi tuna. The toast may look small at first, but was very rich and filling. I will say I was surprised to see the tuna in lox-like strips, but maybe that's because I'm used to ahi tuna either seared or in chunks poke style. All in all, a very nice experience. I think i wanna go back and try the pancakes.
