Metro Wines is the best! I showed up and they were in the middle of a wine tasting. They immediately offered to let me taste with the other guests. The pourer was knowledgeable and I ended up taking home a bottle for later. After they helped me pick out a bottle of champagne for a friend's 40th birthday and the one they suggested hit the nail on the head. I gave a price range and listed off three champagnes that I liked. I got back and to my surprise my husband was so excited with the one I picked up. He had been to the winery and France and happened to love their champagne! It was my first time visiting and the staff was beyond helpful. I'm a little sad I don't live in Asheville so I can frequent their shop regularly but I will be back the next time I'm in town. This place is amazing! We've called in asking for recommendations a couple times now and they have knocked it out of the park! And I really appreciate that they don't try to up-sell us when we give them the price we want. Very knowledgeable and respectful and they clearly love what they do! This is such a great wine store! We were visiting friends in Asheville a few weeks ago, about four days before hurricane Florence hut, and wanted to bring a present. The people working at Metro Wines helped us so much by picking out a good wine for us. I then asked what cheese would go well with it. They could tell we were from out of town so they even hand wrote directions to go to Whole Foods from their store and get the cheese there. I wish I had gotten their names! I HIGHLY Recommend Metro Wines. Buying from a wine store is a hundred times better experience than buying from an impersonal market or big box store. Andy is my wine guy! Right after moving to Asheville, I discovered a delicious Malbec in a local pub and couldn't find it for sale in Asheville. Andy ordered a case for me and has kept the cases coming! He's also introduced me to other wines and his choices are usually spot on for what I like. I don't do 5 stars....well, virtually NEVER (think I've given one other 5 star) BUT...... I bought a box of wine (hey, there's some REALLY good wines that come in boxes..) opened it 2 hours after getting home - it was vinegar!! As I'm leaving town early tomorrow, and the 2 other bottles I bought I gave away as Xmas presents, I was in a dither....couldn't drive back (it's 30 degrees, and no car - motorcycle!), so I called in hopes of at least being credited....and ...... they DELIVERED A REPLACEMENT!!!!! John drove over, agreed that it wasn't any good, and cheerily took back the bad one. This is customer service to the MAX... now I've always been impressed with their staff (hi Anita!) and their wine knowledge. They've consistently recommended great wines (and econimical too!), even when I haven't known quite what I'm looking for. I am now COMMITTED to Metro for life!! Because I am a wine enthusiast, whenever I travel I am on a mission to find a great wine shop. I discovered Metro Wines last year, and visited again this year on another visit to Asheville. This is a must-visit wine shop if you like wine. Both times we have visited, we have been offered, upon entering the store, an opportunity to taste what they have open. And, the staff are eager to walk you through the store and make recommendations on selections based on what you are looking for and/or what your preferences are. Metro Wines compared to the other popular wine stores in Asheville does deserve the highest rating. It's a joy to shop there and the owners/managers are extremely helpful and friendly. I find that I get the better wines by letting them help pick the selections. Keeping in mind my limited budget they do a great job. I also participate in the monthly wine club which is a bargain for the quality of wines you receive. Who doesn't like a case of wine waiting for you each month. I've also been to a couple of their special events and they're fun and good way to meet the neighbors. Hint: Get to know the people managing the place. This is my favorite wine store ever. We just moved from Atlanta to Asheville and enjoy walking to Metro Wines. John the owner is so helpful and very knowledgeable. Andy is also great and super friendly. Don't let the small size of the store fool you they have a large selection. They have regular (almost daily?) wine tastings "on the house" and the wines they taste are delicious, fun wines you'd never accidentally stumble upon on your own and completely affordable.
