Metro Central Transfer Station - Cleaning up

As far as dumps go this one is pretty deluxe. Really clean (I know that seems unlikely--and indeed…read morethis doesn't include smells), and the staff here are super friendly and helpful. You drive up on a scale and they weigh your vehicle, then you drive into a massive building and dump your junk. They reweigh your vehicle and charge you based on the weight of crap you threw out. This isn't a "landfill". It's a processing station. From what I've seen watching their videos, Portland's solid waste is trucked out into the high desert somewhere and buried in a landfill. This transfer station works to pull out all of the recyclables before that happens. Remember to cover your load.

This review is really only to address the poor service of one employee - Charles (older, Black male) - who was working at my last visit. I pulled my vehicle and trailer quite far into the public entrance and waited a few minutes for someone to approach (there was no one visible). After a few minutes I looked around and to my left saw Charles sitting down in a chair - he looked to be texting on his phone. I yelled out "hello?" and he ever-so-slowly came over and proceeded to start the process (I had paperwork) so slowly without a greeting and in such a disinterested manner that I wondered if he had fallen asleep standing up. He turned a quick paperwork collection and inspection into a painfully long process where he barely moved. Felt like he was paying me back for disturbing his slumber. Maybe he can retire or find a place where he doesn't interact with paying customers?

I had several people offer to do the task, and settled on a fellow who was supposed to come today (Monday) to take care of it. After the time he was due to be here he let me know he was unable to do it so I had to scramble to find someone else. I found this company Slam Dunk Junk. I gave them a call and spoke with a very nice fellow, Scott who said that they could definitely take care of this for me today!! I sent him pictures of the 'junk' and let him know what the other fellow had quoted me, and he came in right on par with that quote! All along the day, I received updates about when the fellows would be here, when they were enroute and when they had arrived. The fellows that showed up, Connor and Tony, were polite and respectful and got right to work. It took them all of about 30 minutes to clear everything out that I needed removed! It was dark, but they had headlamps on their hats and did a fantastic job!! (they even did this with a stand in truck because their regular truck blew a tire and had to go into the shop!) From start to finish this was a smooth operation, VERY well run and managed and an EXCELLENT value for the cost of the job!! Hands down I will be calling upon them again, when I need stuff hauled off! Oh and after they were done, I received a message thanking me for my business!! Absolutely STELLAR!!

I wanted to find someplace that wasn't going to just landfill the stuff. The number Yelp was originally showing was just a number which forwarded to Total Reclaim's Seattle facility but, Portland's Metro Recycling hot-line had the latest info. on Total Reclaim's Portland location. I dropped my Styrofoam at Total Reclaim's drop-off site at 5805 NE Columbia Blvd, two blocks west of NE 60th, and on the north side of Columbia Blvd. Their local phone number is 503-281-1899. Total Reclaim, Inc. accepts all sorts of stuff (computers, home and office electronics, TVs, stereo gear, even some appliances, you name it!) and it all gets 'reclaimed' so none of it ends up in any landfills. So, you can do-the-right-thing, and get rid of that garage full of electronics, appliances, plastics, styrofoam, and fluorescents, all with a short trip to NE Columbia Blvd.!

Enter Total Reclaim: The easy eco-friendly alternative to ditching your unconventional recyclables at the dump. I stuffed my trunk and back seat full of Styrofoam blocks, and made a quick trip over to Total Reclaim. For a mere $5 I was finally rid of a ridiculous amount Styrofoam. $5 is a clear bargain compared to the $10 minimum charge at the dump. And, in my book, recycling trumps wastefulness any day.

I arrive at the location and both gates are open and sign posted in front reads the same hours. So wouldn't a normal person believe the business was open ???? I wasn't the only one that thought this way yet I get there and I'm very rudely told they close at 4:30 and argued with me saying he had no control over what their business sign says or what their phone recording says because according to him both sign in front and phone recording are things the business doesn't control. I'm sorry but I don't think so, you hand painted homemade sign isn't controlled by your business....I call bullshit. I wish I could post a picture to show proof of what I'm saying. A homeless man had seen the same signs on separate visits to the business so he walked over 2 hours to get there in time only to be rudely turned away as well. Oh and it's very bad business to imply that a customer is an idiot because the 2 forms of contact said close at 5:30 but yet the one place not checked said 4:30. My point is 2 out of 3 say one thing and the other a different thing so what are you supposed to take is gospel? I figured the phone recording must be correct but then again I guess I'm just too stupid to think the information a business gives out could possibly be correct.......

Our leftover items the machine wouldn't take and our bags were covered in filth by the time we were done and there is no trash bin you can put that trash in. I did not want to put it in my car, so what am I supposed to do with it? The answer is plan ahead and bring an additional clean bag so you can get the stuff back home. But the reality is that 95% of ppl at the bottle drop are homeless. So why is the city not providing a trash bin nearby?? It's ridiculous. In my case it wasn't much trash and we were parked outside a nearby business so we put the trash in a trash can outside. There was no sign saying what sort of trash was allowed or not allowed. The security guard for the business (Lowe's) was outside and didn't say a thing when I put the trash in the bin. He then took the trash back out and chased us down with it! It was uncalled for! What a power trip! Why not have a sign on the trash can, or say "I'm sorry no recycling trash in that bin". When I asked why he didn't just say something or have a sign he immediately became volatile saying "have fun sleeping outside"! H clearly is blinded by hatred for the homeless community that makes up the majority of folks in that area bc neither myself or my son look homeless anyway but it still doesn't excuse his behavior. In the end though.. where are homeless ppl supposed to put their garbage?? Carry it around for eternity?? Can the bottle drop area get a trash can for crying out loud?? Portland residents are taxed enough to support a dumpster. I don't think it's an unreasonable request seeing how the mission of the bottle drop is supposedly to keep Oregon clean and pristine. What a joke!!

I was in the area and thinking that this spot was probably a horrible idea especially so close to their closing time. I was completely wrong! I live in Beaverton and the redemption center by me is a mess with a very long line of people cashing in their max. This was shockingly efficient - even with the people in line who clearly know what's what and are ready to rock. Everyone was averaging 2 bags. There is a security person right at the door calling out the free lane for you to go to. The floor was clean and I was just impressed as to the efficiency and how fast it was.
