This station on Rome Metro Linea B is a necessary evil for us. It's location near Stazione…read moreOstiense is convenient for accessing many historic sites in Rome, as well as direct travel to Termini. The station itself is run-down and generally dirty, and the entry is less than ideal.

The preceding station is Garbatella going toward Laurentina, and the following station is Circo Massimo going towards Jonio or Rebibbia. Ok the station is kinda dirty and unremarkable overall, it's a subway and a train station. Trains from here go to Ostia's beaches, but I went in the other direction to Trastevere quarter (rione) and the city centre. The station has escalators that can be in non-working condition. It seems to be a gathering place for the homeless and drunks as well. Little research shows that metro station was opened on February 10, 1955. The mosaics by Enrico Castellani from Italy and Beverly Pepper from the U.S., located in the atrium, have won the Artemetro Roma award. The Porta San Paolo station for the Ferrovia Roma-Lido line runs alongside the metro station. The Stazione di Roma Ostiense, from where main lines FR1, FR3, and FR5 run, is connected to the metro station through the underpass.

It was much easier to catch a train here versus at the very busy Termini station. One way fare was 1,50€. I was able to pay by tapping my credit card at the fare gate.

(+) Very fast and affordable way to get around Rome. 1.50 euros for a single trip or better yet, 7 euros for a 24 hours unlimited pass. We would just get the pass and bop around different areas of town. It came in very handy. (-) Kind of dirty. I can only compare to other bullet trains I've used in other countries and I can tell you that Bangkok and Tokyo were both much, much cleaner. (-) Beware of pickpockets! Apparently they are very skilled here. We were warned on our first day in the city by the hotel staff. Luckily we brought jackets that had multiple zipper pockets n the inside, so we made it through the trip without a hitch. Suck on that, gypsies! (+/-) Heavily armed military presence all over at all stations. That is good for protection purposes, I suppose. On the flip side, they always made me a bit nervous as it seemed most of them kept their fingers on their triggers. Yikes. 3 stars. A-Ok. It served it's purpose and did the trick.
