We made our way there only to be rudely denied service or help of any kind! Heart broken and stewing in our shock we stumbled across BOCADILLO DE JAMON Y CHAMPAN and boy are we glad we did!!! Our server Boris is an absolute charming, warm friendly person who was so accommodating. He offered us some suggestions from the menu as well as explained all the Champs they offered. We settled on a couple of bottles of our favorite Veuve. The olives and Jamon are so fresh and tasty. The meat and cheese platter is heavenly! Any of the sandwiches made on the light, airy crusty bread are divine. Usually, bread on a rustic sandwich is overwhelmingly doughy, hard and chewy. Bocadillo's is light and airy with a tad of crunch. Boris informed us that the bread is made daily by a bakery and one of the best. They also serve a pureed roasted pepper sauce topped with Spanish olive oil (cold) for dipping your chips or sandwich in or simply eat as a cold soup. The desserts are just as amazing. Cheese cake and chocolate were top notch. If you are American and your Spanish is so-so, Boris can help you out. He speaks both languages fluently. He is so interesting and makes everything about Bocadillo that much more. He is very knowledgeable about the food they offer, how it is made, what it is made with and as far as the Champs he is full of knowledge as well. Prices are so reasonable as well. We made it back a few times to this place as Boris and the chef on duty made it that special for us. So if ever in Madrid stop by and ask for Boris! Have a few glasses of Champs (Spanish Rose great too)you will not be disappointed.

The chorizo was solid, but the bocadillo de calamares was on another level. Fried to perfection, served on soft bread, and the lemon aioli really set it off. We kept hearing from people all over Madrid that La Campana was the place to go, and I even overheard multiple walking tours throughout the week calling this THE spot for a bocadillo de calamares. After going myself, I completely get it. It is conveniently located right in Plaza Mayor where there are several bocadillo shops, but this is THE one you want. They move fast too. I was in and out of line and already eating in less than 5 minutes. Perfect spot if you want a quick but filling Spanish classic. Next time I am definitely sitting inside and trying more off the menu.

You also have the option to purchase aioli which pairs really well with it. The bread was warm and fresh and everything together makes it clear why this is their most popular item. At under 5 euros, it is an incredible value. The service is straightforward. The employees do not really speak much English, but they are nice and get you taken care of quickly. The shop is located right next to another nearly identical spot that sells the same thing, but La Campana is definitely the more popular one. It gets crowded very fast so it helps to arrive early or be ready to squeeze in. The interior is pretty bare bones with small tables and chairs that fit about 25 people, but it serves its purpose and keeps the focus on the food.

I grabbed a mini croissant-style puff pastry with turkey, tomato, avocado, and pesto, plus a mini brioche bun with crab, pink sauce, and lettuce. The seafood bun was solid, but that turkey pesto croissant was ... excuse my language ... the f****n' truth! No exaggeration THEE best croissant I've ever had. It was so good chile, I came back the next day and got a full-sized one for lunch and it was still just as good. The space inside is clean and room with lots of comfy furniture; in addition, they also have free WiFi and clean bathrooms which is always appreciated while out and about in the city on vacation. If you're in Madrid (or Mexico City or Japan where there other locations are) this place is a must try! PS: The have a rewards app and will give you a free plain buttery croissant for joining.

The tarta de queso fundente (melting cheesecake) is one of the best desserts I have ever tasted!…read more I actually sought out Pastelería Mallorca because I read somewhere that the Fismuler cheesecake was available there. But from what I can gather, the tarta de queso fundente is a completely different dessert. I was not disappointed! According to their website, the cheesecake has a "thin and crispy cookie layer, a creamy interior, and a flavor blend of cream cheese, fresh cheese, and premium parmesan." I admit I'm a parmesan fanatic. This cheesecake has such an interesting, intense flavor. The texture was indeed "melting" - gooey on the inside, a little bit more set toward the outside. It was rich but not overly sweet, and had a savory kick from the parmesan. I will be dreaming about this cheesecake until I hopefully make it back to Madrid again one day. I came here for dessert and coffee after lunch at the Mercado de la Paz. I also got a lovely café con leche to go with the cheesecake. They have other food and desserts as well, but this cheesecake was so delicious, I wanted to leave a review just to spotlight it.

I introduced it to my co-workers and now it has become a regular spot we go to multiple times each time we come. For me, it is nice to have a place when I am traveling here by myself that I can walk into, order to take-away, get my food in less than 10 minutes, and then either go back to the hotel if I have to get some more work done or walk over to Retiro Park and people watch while enjoying my food! When I have co-workers with me, we do try to sit in and eat together, which is also a nice option. The oatmeal chocolate cinnamon cookies are worth 5 stars on their own. I have tried almost all of the smoothies at this point and have enjoyed them all. The nomanches de pollo sandwich and sobrino consentido salad are what I tend to gravitate back to, but I have tried other items off the menu and really enjoyed them all. I think the waitstaff there recognizes me now (probably can't help it when a woman who orders in half English/half butchered Spanish comes in every other day for 2 or 3 week periods every couple of months), and I have always had friendly interactions with them all. Overall, a great spot that I am happy to have found. One thing that would be much appreciated as a person who is still working on their Spanish - have at least one menu translated into other languages :) I have ordered a number of items and enjoyed them all so far, but if I knew what everything on the menu that would be very helpful! Another suggestion would be to open earlier! I would love to have their smoothies and other breakfast options when I am in town, but they do not open until 9am which is after I am already working.
