This is my local cinema/theater and lately my trips here have become less and less enjoyable due to the cleanliness, or rather lack of. We, a family of four, pay good money to enjoy watching movies here but, on each one of our last half a dozen or so visits, the filth has all but ruined our outings. We've found gum on the seats, popcorn boxes strewn around, crumbs in every nook and cranny, drink spillages everywhere and one dares to use the restrooms. Clean up the mess, folks! read more

The Metreon is legitimately the most average place in San Francisco. It's basically a food court that serves just about the same type of food (same restaurants even) as the Westfield food court attached to a movie theater, a target, and a rooftop event space. While that sounds classy and all, it's nothing special. The Metreon of my youth was a place of wonder. I remember the Sony stores and multi-levels of various stores that scaled the mall, and all is left is open, white space with the most standard of food court offerings. Still, it's not a bad place to hang out. The Metreon offers free wi-fi, and there's enough food options that there's something for everyone (even if nothing really stands out as a wow factor). I do miss the classier, more 90s theater feel of the Metreon of the past and feel that the execution of creating a clean, open modern space has resulted in something that feels sort of dry and austere. Hopefully, the Metreon scales up and adds more class to it instead of feeling like just a place to go before bars open up. TIP: The Target is pretty chill. read more

Has definitely improved over the years. I used to come here only to watch movies at AMC or play pool and drink at Jillian's. Since they keep adding to the Metreon, I find myself here more often. One of the main reasons? They have a Target! No more driving all the way to Colma to pick up a couple things. Instead, I can just stop by the Metreon during my lunch break. A great convenience! As for food, I've checked out: Buckhorn Grill, Freshroll, SF Soup Company, Sharetea, Split Bread and Super Duper. I find myself going back to Sharetea numerous times to get my boba fix. I'm glad the Metreon has stepped up its game a little. The food offerings are better and I have more than a movie as a reason to frequent it. read more

The 4 stars are in part for nostalgia's sake, to be honest. A part of me prefers the "Sony Metreon" of my mid 90s early 00s childhood memories from family trips to SF from SoCal. But recently, since moving to the East Bay, I've been back to the Metreon with friends and despite all the changes, I've enjoyed my time here. I have surprisingly - or maybe inevitably - made new memories here, while still associating it with some of the old warm, fuzzy feelings... haha. I remember there being a large arcade area with DDR, and I'd be so impressed with the groups of teens demolishing the game. (And I'd imagine that SF young people/kids would come here after school by themselves, or just skip school... and it's funny because a friend later confirmed to me that this was pretty much what they did. Hah.) There was also a comic book store upstairs that we'd go to, to buy Moebius comics for my artist uncle. It just all felt like a really cool and fun destination to me as a kid... and for a while, they also had a huge Where the Wild Things Are playground. The details were impressive. Anyone else remember that?? I also remember Spider-Man hanging outside the building when the first reboot movies came out. The food court here was also really crowded (we always had a hard time finding tables), and we liked this Japanese ramen place. Now all that has been changed, entirely different food court and options. There's the AMC and Target. There's Sharetea, which is cool to see, and I think the first Sharetea I tried. The lines are always long here, with the moviegoers, but moves fast and you don't have to wait very long for your drink. Buckhorn is also in a back, lower corner of the foodcourt. A couple of dessert options right by the entrance door, always look deserted. Seems like a loss. I still feel like the vibe of this place is a fun, invigorating one. Maybe it's the high, clean, and modern architecture that contributes to it and the various crowds of people who come in. The AMC itself though has such narrow rows, a pretty tight space, which I was initially surprised about, but then again it's SF with limited space and many people. read more

This place is great. There is a movie theater, a Target and places to eat. I miss the PlayStation store. That was a fund place. I hate it that the San Francisco Soup Company closes earlier then all the other eateries here do. I wish they were open later. I wish they had a place like this in Las Vegas. The food court was amazing ... great selection of food and much more upscale then your typical Panda and McDonald's that you would find in a mall. Love it. I definitely recommend Buckhorn Grill and get the Tri-Tip. They also have a full size movie theater and convenient check-in stations where you can buy your tickets right away instead of standing in line. And lastly, my favorite City Target. Who doesn't love Target? They also have a 4th floor called "City View" which I thought it was a floor for people to check out the view but it's actually a private floor for parties ... oops. The security on that floor is pretty uptight and serious about their job you can't even use the bathrooms on that floor ... wtf. You would think the president was there or something lol. The only peeve I have is parking ... then again Las Vegas spoils us with free parking so I'm sure locals are used to it. I forgot what the prices are but I remember after 6 pm it's only $1.50 per hour. read more

Review 400 and it goes to San Francisco's newly revamped Metreon. The shopping center isn't finished, but its vastly different from its previous Sony days as it desperately needed change. As I previously stated in my AMC Metreon review, prior to the remodeling, the Metreon was a ghost town. The IMAX screen was the only reason for visiting the Metreon. However, Westfield has taken over and Target is finally on its way and opening later this year. I was more than impressed with the modern and minimalist look of the new Metreon. The planners and designers went for simple and the shopping center has lots of open space, which makes it look larger than life. The center has lots of white and soft colors and almost reminds you of an Apple store. More importantly, the new tenants are plenty with lots of dinning options in the dinning terrace. Buckhorn Grill looks to be the only remaining tenant from the last incarnation of the Metreon. Cako Bakery, Chipotle, Coriander Gourmet Thai, Creperie Saint Germain, Firewood Cafe, and San Francisco Soup Company are just some of the new eateries added to the new Metreon, with a few more on the way. One might argue that there aren't shopping options at the Metreon, but the Westfield mall is across the street and the Metreon could be more of an evening out, such as a bite to eat and a movie. On my visit, I tried gaining access to City View, but it was closed and it seems as its an event space only, which seems rather unfortunate for patrons of the Metreon who want to check out the skyline. Nevertheless, Yerba Buena is Metreon's background and provides a perfect spot for relaxing or enjoying your lunch. As with many things, the Metreon does have its cons, but Westfield has done an incredible job of reviving an otherwise dead shopping center to something exciting and vibrant. I can only picture the Metreon getting better with time or we can only hope. read more

*this review is for the IMAX theater* I always come here with the bf for the "hot" new releases; usually the Marvel movies, Inception, & (just recently) Star Wars! Unlike other AMC theaters, this has the actual IMAX screen. I love how we don't have to arrive early and wait in line to grab the good seats. For IMAX, there is reserved seating- so I can come in late and not have to worry about having my seat stolen. I do miss the classic IMAX intro that they used to play before the start of the movies (showing you all the speakers that the IMAX has to offer & the sick beat). Now they just play previews like every other theater. I would take away 1 star for the intro but I can't due to the fact that they allow outside drinks into the theater. Yay! Metreon has a Sharetea located inside of it; one of my favorite boba spots to check out. So it's a huge plus that I can sip on my favorite drink without having to sneak it in. read more

I actually really like the Metreon. This place is beautifully designed and gives off a really futuristic, fancy smancy vibe. The place has it all -- restaurants, milk tea, movie theatre, Target, Starbucks... Across the street, you will find more restaurants while in its backyard is a relaxing garden with green-ish colored grass, and some benches for lounging and enjoying the sun. It's easy to get lost here however, but if you look around carefully, you'll find signs and arrows that should tell you how to get to where you are looking to go. The last time I was here, someone had an especially hard time finding Target, whose signage was such an inconspicuous little target symbol. In retrospect, these little target signs popping up randomly around the Metreon is actually kind of amusing :p read more

Pretty nice movie theatre, especially with IMAX and the reclining seats. I use AMC Gold Stub so cant comment on ticket prices but I know those imax tickets can be pretty steep. Only bad things, I sat in the back of one theatre and could hear the theatre next door during the quiet parts which kinda ruined parts of some movies and I wish these theaters had attendees check periodically through the movie, can't tell you how many movies were ruined by rude customers near me talking and being obnoxious. read more

Pop in once per year for the International Auto Show, that's about it. It's a nice big space, they made it really pretty on the outside on ONE side of the street last year. The event staff are generally cordial and it's full of Ferraris so I do like that. read more

This place has changed since I was last there a few years back. Some new restaurants and different layout of the shops and restaurants on the main floor. The movie theater has gotten a little better with food. I remember long time ago, they had bagged popcorn refilled in the bins...and I see now they pop their own. The movie reception area used to fill a huge part of the downstairs, but now, they've cut it and included kiosk stations for online orders and self-serve...I think nice. The place has still much potential, but understanding the cost of space in prime location, it might now be as easy to start up. I was there for the new Avengers movie (how disappointing the movie was lol). I really enjoyed the butter loaded popcorn, although I dropped the first one I got and I had to buy a new one. The security let me go out and in again. The rooms are big and quite spacious for you to lay there and watch the movie. All over a good experience, I'll be coming back. read more

Friends of mine had waited an hour and a half to view Wind River with passes only for the workers there to allow others to cut in line. Ultimately they weren't allowed in. Funny how they were a native American group that was denied admission. The manager was very smug with her decision to turn them away, smiling with glee. Never going to this garbage theater again when they discriminate and give preferential treatment to people to cut instead of waiting longer every one else. I love going to the Metreon! I remember the year it first opened I was still a kid and at the time they had a special feature for kids that was themed "Where the Wild Things Are" if you guys remember that.. They also had virtual bowling here when it opened. I'm not sure if that still exists. I came back here today with my best friend just to see what changes have happened. They have a Target here as well as an AMC Theater which has always been there. I've only been to that theater once years ago when I watched " Bruno" with my dad and sister. We even got interviewed by the news station outside when we left LOL it was a shitty movie btw. They have a nicer food court now downstairs that didn't use to be like that. It has Sharetea, Cako, Inay Filipino Food, Starbucks etc. Overall a fun place to go! read more

This is the place you go when your favorite theaters are all booked for the movie you wanna see. Decent theatre but way overpriced. The ticket taker was super rude and wouldn't tell us where our theatre was. He only nodded in a general direction twice and wouldn't speak. And it turned out our theatre wasn't even in that area. Then we had to go back to get glasses from him. The recliners are nice but the rest of the place is kind of a dump. The carpets look ancient and gross and the concession stand is pretty basic. I have been coming to this shopping center since it was built and opened in 1999. The shopping center has gone through a few changes and renovations. I miss the Sony store and music store. There was a Microsoft store here also. The shopping center has a City Target Store on the second floor. I will shop for food, grocery and household items on the way home or in transit. I also like the movie theater's main entrance at mid-Fourth Street. The AMC Metreon has 16 screens 3D & Real 3D and includes an IMAX Theater. The restaurants are just okay. Jillian's at Metreon has large screen televisions for viewing sports games and adult beverages with a convenient location. read more

Watched Black Panther here, in IMAX, and it was unbelievable. Now, I may be bias because Black Panther was one of the best movies I've seen in a while, but the theatre was a really enjoyable place to experience the film. It's a bit confusing, but you have to go to the third floor to get to the movie area. You can buy drinks and popcorn and such in the lobby area, and then you go and give your ticket and enter the different cinemas area. read more

Metreon has definitely evolved from what it started out to be which was a giant Sony advertisement. Now it's become something that it needs to be in order to survive, a food court. It's a little bit of a Debbie Downer to see all the once popular areas shut down like Airtight Garage and the PlayStation Store. I miss the skyway on the mezzanine level that I used to walk over to get from the one side of the Metreon to the Montage restaurant and the Airtight Garage which led to the escalators to head up to the movie theater. I just loved being able to get lost in there, spending time at the PlayStation Store to try out some new games, and hanging out at the Airtight Garage to play a few rounds of Dance Dance Revolution. Metreon was THE spot to be whenever Sony released a new system. When Target finally opened, it made Metreon feel really small and not open spaced. Pretty much all traces of what it used to be have been absorbed by the department store. But with its addition came the convenience of having to buy cheaper drinks and snacks to take to the movie theater. I still visit Metreon on a consistent basis because of AMC IMAX theater which is a true IMAX theater and not like the pitiful wannabe IMAX at AMC Van Ness. The food options are decent if you need a quick bite and it does make for a good meeting spot with friends and family. As a food court and convenience store, Metreon does the job, but it isn't the same "entertainment complex" that it used to be. read more

Dear Metreon: Your ADA-accessibility sucks. The issues start at the very entrance, where there IS an automatic door...that opens awkwardly right into the only flight of stairs in an otherwise ramped lobby. Who designed this??? And then there's usually a big sign sitting on the floor also blocking the door from opening properly. This, you call access??? And then once inside, finding a bathroom is a challenge. The space is very cluttered from a WHEELCHAIR perspective. Flow is terrible. So I headed up to the theater level to see if I could find a bathroom up there. Yeah, there's a bathroom on the 3rd floor, but you have to have a ticket to a movie to use it because it's behind the ticket taker's station. She grumpily told me to go up to the 4th floor and use that bathroom. Haha. I got back into the elevator, which refused to take me up to the 4th floor. Nevermind that the escalator was still working to take people to the 4th floor, but that didn't do ME a lick of good! I went back to the ticket taker and explained that the elevator wouldn't take me upstairs, could I please use the bathroom on the 3rd floor. With her grumpy attitude ticked up a notch, she gave me her same spiel about how I couldn't use it without a theater ticket. So then I got mad. And I got officious. And I explained ADA accessibility to her, and how everyone else could use that 4th floor bathroom, but I couldn't get there, so was she REALLY interested in prohibiting me from using the one bathroom I COULD use?! At this point, with all the extra grumpitudinousness she could muster, she acquiesced, still giving me the "I just KNOW you're going to try to sneak into one of our dumb summer blockbuster movies that are 3/4 of the way through!!" look. Seriously, Metreon? THIS is what you call an improvement from before? This is your idea of ADA access? Nope, I don't think so. This was a headache, a lot of rudeness, and general irritation. I am MUCH happier to go back to any of the many other movie theatres in this city, such as your neighbor, the Century Theatres at the Westfield Shopping Centre! No one there has ever given me attitude, and the bathrooms are easily accessible! Also, the prices are lower, there's less of a crowd, and maybe it's just my taste, but I like their movie selection better. But, seriously? Do something about that front door, because there might be other, more patient, summer-blockbuster-loving wheelchair-bound people who really want to attend your theater, but who are having a hell of a time because of that stupid front door arrangement! I haven't been back here in years and always adored this place because of the variety of food places and shops within the vicinity. The stairway and elevators smelled like urine and almost puked. I literally had to hold my breath running down the steps. With so much money being generated from this parking structure you would be assuming it would be clean or at least not have such a foul smell! Gross! I honestly believed that the Metreon of the dot-com boom couldn't be outdone in its gee-aren't-we-cool datedness, but I was very very wrong. This proves two things: 1. We're headed for a similar bust, since companies actually have to make profits in order to stay in business, and most of the tech companies are most definitely not making profits--unless you call getting flooded with venture capital for no good reason making a profit. 2. What people want isn't necessarily what people need. There's a fine balance to strike philosophically, morally, and psychologically; but you should never allow what everyone can agree on to be in any way instructive. Diverse people do have a lot in common, but finding this common ground takes time and effort. The lowest common denominator is not the same as common ground. Well, at least I have yet another reason not to visit and/or care about South of Market. read more

I've been coming here for years, and regardless whether your coming for the movie theater, meeting friends for lunch at one of the fabulous restaurants or coming to explore one of the many cool stores, there's something for everyone. I remember when Metreon first opened their doors back in the '90s. I was super excited because it was different from any of the other 'malls' around. Back in the day, they had a 'virtual' bowling alley, a Sony electronic store, a Playstation store, and many other totally obsolete businesses (does anyone else remember when 'City View' was "Where the Wild Things Are" play area?!). Then the Metreon lost Sony, and most of the unique businesses started vacating, and Metreon became "that huge empty space where the IMAX is." Flash-forward to present day...City Target...BAM! Westfield takeover...BAM! Like defibrillation paddles to this dying space! Metreon has received a new lease on life, with a bigger and better food court, and a behemoth of a Target that pretty much occupies all the retail space Metreon ever had! Not to mention the amazing event space located on the third floor (City View)! I'm glad to see new life at Metreon, it's come a long way since back in the day. read more

I remember years ago when I lived in San Francisco, the Metreon was a dying center, clinging to life by a smattering of stores and restaurants. I did like some of those stores, like the comic book store, since they had a quirky appeal. Gone are the quirky stores, replaced by more restaurants and a large Target, a nice feature that San Franciscans will definitely appreciate having here. I'm glad that the Metreon is now bustling with patrons, but part of me does miss the old charm the old Metreon held. I guess for me the perfect combination would be to keep the Metreon as it currently is, but have some more of those smaller stores still there for people to shop at before or after going to Target or eating at one of the restaurants here. read more

I haven't been in the Metreon since 2007 (exception of Target and the movie theater.) I only stopped in recently 'cause I had to take a Shitreon. Looks like they've since added a really yuppie food court with a lot of options. I guess if you can afford it it's probably pretty good ... actually technically I CAN afford it, but I don't feel comfortable in this type of setting at all. All these people looking quizically at you like "You're not Apple People, what are YOU doing here?" Bleh. 5 stars though for a reliable place to take a quality dump before I have to get on the Megabus for 5 hours. Good toilets really aren't easy to find downtown. read more

You can diss me all you want but I like this place. It's got a good history and I'm hoping it'll stay successful. From the beginnings as a Sony superstore back in the early 2000s to a total reject to now a new and improved entertainment arena, this place has really become quite the attraction with the new Target but the movie theater has always been a staple of the place and now the food court with its multiple dining options is honestly a great addition. I remember last year going to a movie and having to wait 2 hours before it started so having to walk a block or two to a Chinese restaurant I will not name (and having overpriced mediocre food) thinking how great it'd be if there were better options closer by. My coworkers and I went to investigate the newly remodeled Metreon. It looks really nice! The decor is really pretty - clean and modern. A few restaurants have already opened - SF Soup, Coriander, Sorabol, Buckhorn, Cako Bakery and Creamery, La Boulange, and So Green Yogurt. Chipotle, Super Duper, and a few others will follow this summer. The AMC is still there and a TARGET is on the way. Right now is a great time to go because it isn't very crowded. Once that Target opens I'm sure it's gonna get cray cray. read more

I've read about picking up bed bugs in movie theaters but I try not to think about creepy crawly things when I'm sitting there in the dark. The smell in the theater (The Witch - April 9th) was so awful and just kept wafting by, surrounding me. Aaarrgh! Days later and I can still smell it :( Management informed us that the smell was coming from a couple of paying customers and there is nothing they can do about it. read more

This place used to be really cool. And then it became a rat hole. And now it's cool again. Years ago there was Microsof-tland (Before they modeled their stores after Apple in a failed attempt not to look pathetic), there was a Sony land, the theater, and an exhibit up top of Where the Wild Things are. Then most of that went away and you were left with a few gross restaurants and the theater. NOW it's been transformed into a beautiful, gleaming, marble lined, over-priced (because it's the city) meeting place. People opposed Target going in because it's a big box store and the company donated 150K to a MN redneck.... I mean republican who opposed gay marriage but Target has since tried to make nice with us gays and with enough lube, Target was able to squeez inside. I'm glad the Metreon let Target come inside. read more

I came here for a showcase and was very impressed. I've never been here before, but I heard the history. I would definitely consider this as a wedding venue, for anyone looking for a good city venue. I got to see how they could handle catering, DJs and tenting. And who could forget to mention the amazing view of SF. I can't wait to some back and see how the bottom level is like once the facelift is completed! read more

Wow, Metreon is looking nice! The do over is starting to show its stuff. Excited to see all the food vendors like Chipotle; SF Soup Co; Sanraku; Coriander Gourmet Thai; Sorabol Korean BBQ + Asian Noodles Buckhorn Grill; Cako; La Boulange; Creperie Saint Germain; Firewood Cafe; Super Duper Burger; Hunan Food; SoGreen Yogurt, etc. Very nice to have a Target in the city as well. What I love about the Metreon is the aggregated dining, gaming, music, shopping, and movies. For some odd reason, the machines sometimes print out more tickets, and I always find free passes. I usually come here to watch movies and to the new boulange. My friends and I always like movie theatre hot dogs, but one late night we decided to go for burritos and eat them while we waited for Avatar IMAX. I had already seen the movie, but wanted to see it in IMAX because everyone said it was mind-blowing, nerds..So I'm a type of girl who tends to fall asleep when: a. I eat a massive burrito b. It's late at night and watching a movie. I completely dozed off by half the movie, because it was eternal and got a bit cheesy at certain scenes. Suddenly, I wake up and i'm snoring on some big scary dude's shoulders who was eating skittles. He felt so awkward that he offered me a skittle. I was so embarrassed, my friends didn't stop cracking up and didn't wake me up, jerks. read more
