Ecopark is your solution to "can this be recycled?". Much of the time, the answer is yes. I find…read moremyself heading to their website frequently to see if Monroe County recycles certain items. For things that are recyclable but aren't accepted in curbside recycling bins, you can take your items to Ecopark off of Paul Road in Chili. Today I brough scrap metal, empty prescriptions bottles, and the "bag of plastic bags" I know we all have. No appointments necessary for that stuff, though if you are bringing things like paint or hazardous waste, you will need to make an appointment online. Many things are free to recycle, some have a fee. I paid $5 to recycle a tire on a previous trip. The line of cars is usually pretty long but moves more quickly than you'd expect. Once you're in the building, attendants let you know where you can put your items. Drive out the other side of the building and exit the way you came in. Easy process, and there are a few less items in the landfill!

I truly cannot say enough good things about the incredible team at Community Composting. While I am…read morenot a bucket customer, I am SO thrilled to have a service like this available in Rochester. The team is crazy knowledgable about all things composting and great advocates for how we all can make the world a more sustainable place. In non-Corona times, they do a monthly event at Abundance co-op that talks about the importance of composting. From their knowledge and expertise, I was able to start my own backyard pile and was also inspired to dig up/create my own raised veggie garden. All of our food scraps now go into a super cheap DIY bin, with full instructions on how to accomplish this given by CC. I think the bucket program would be the perfect fit for anyone in an apartment or anyone just looking to make an easy sustainable change. They make everything so easy and I look forward to being a strong supporter of this org for as long as I possibly can!

Instead of throwing away your organic waste, you can have it made into compost. This is one of a…read morecouple of businesses in Rochester that offer this service. You get a green bucket from them and put all of your food waste into it. There are several options for plans: you can have them pick up your compostable items bi-weekly, or you can bring them your bucket at one of several locations and swap it for an empty one. The second option works best if you are a small household that doesn't fill up a bucket every two weeks. It's quite affordable, and if you go with the pick-up program you also get a share of compost in the spring. With the swap option, you can buy compost at a reduced price. Give it a try, start reducing the amount of waste you send to the landfill.
