roast suckling pig on display
Nancy L.

Another memorable meal in Spain. Segovia is known for roast suckling pig so make sure you try it if you make your way out to Segovia. Do not go to the ones catered to tourists - these ones are closer to the aqueduct/center of Segovia. Jimeno is located closer to the Alcazar, which is also a beautiful attraction that I recommend! The roast suckling pig was probably the best I've had in my life. The meat literally melted in my mouth! I can imagine eating this when I'm old and haggy and have no teeth left! on the other hand, the Castilian beef was a huge miss. The meat was soooooooooooooooooooo hard! It was extremely difficult to chew and I ended up spitting out a lot of the meat because I couldn't swallow. It was also just beef seasoned with salt?? That was basically my impression of it. Despite the beef (one star deduction), I had quite a nice time here, mainly due to how amazing the roast suckling pig was! My cold draft beer was also refreshing and went well with my lunch. The staff didn't speak much English.

Conchinillo (suckling pig) with fries.

Very small restaurant, perhaps seating no more than twenty people: come early if you don't have a reservation to ensure a spot! The conchinillo (suckling pig) was incredibly succulent: the thigh piece was a tad dry, but the rest was just right, with a crackling skin to give extra texture to the already-delicious dish. Had the ponche segoviano afterwards, which was really rich and sweet. Great to round off my Segovia adventure! Prices are a little high, but for the quality, it's worth a go.

When in Segovia, one must try the cochinillo (roast suckling pig). I was on one of my pseudo-vegetarian kicks at the time, and ordered the seafood soup instead (which was really good, and had lots of mussels and clams in it), but when the pig arrived at our table, it was just smelled so good.... My husband immediately digs into it, and insists that I 'have to try it', so I comply by having one small bite. It was delicious; so tender, so succulent... I had a bigger bite... which lead to another, and you get the gist of it. The dish comes with some fries, which are awful, but you're too busy enjoying the pig to care too much about the lousy fries. Excellent service. Free wifi. It's a small restaurant, and it looks like they take reservations, so I'd recommend booking a table. The staff here speak very little English.

1/4 suckling pig ("2-3" portion size) about €30

The experience of eating Roasted Suckling Pig while in Segovia is not to be missed! I literally cannot even begin to describe how insanely good this meal was. If you are debating between a day trip from Madrid to either Toledo or Segovia, and you fancy yourself a foodie, I highly recommend choosing Segovia. As you can already tell, my group decided to visit Segovia from Madrid for our day trip to see the Alcazar and the impressive Roman Aqueduct. We decided we'd plan on seeing the castle first which was a good plan because it was relatively early and most places weren't yet even open for lunch. After wandering around the castle we started to mosey our way back to the main part of the town. Meson Don Jimeno is conveniently located close to the castle, and we decided to stop in due to the recommendation in one of our guide books. We were relived to find that you can order portions of the pig instead of the entire one. For about $30 Euros you can get a portion fit for 2-3 people. There were four of us so we decided to try a cup of their soup and a single portion of the suckling lamb. The food was more than plentiful but it was so good we nearly finished everything (bread included). Service was steady and friendly despite how quickly the restaurant filled up. Right as lunch time peaked every table in the place was taken and people started lingering near the door waiting to get in. Something about the experience really stuck with me (it was modest, but really wonderful) and I would easily go again just to experience that meal a second time.

Easy to find as it's on your way from the cathedral to the castle in Segovia. This place has the best suckling pig! The meat was nice and tender. The skin was crisp to perfection. The fries that were served with it were an added bonus to our taste buds. We also ordered a sizzling garlic shrimp dish. We loved the sauce so much that we ended up dipping our bread in it.

When in Segovia you must try the Suckling Pig. It's a must eat for all carnivores.... As a Filipino I can't say it's better than lechon but.....it pretty close. We went to Meson Don JIMENO. They only have a few tables so if they're full, make a reservation then go see the Alcázar de Segovia then come back. Worth the wait. A bit pricey at €140 for a whole pig so we only ordered the meal size.

We didn't stay to eat. We had a drink at the bar and were thinking about food but the bartender just wanted us to go away. She was also angry that I took a photo of the suckling pig (which I couldn't wait to have in Europe because it is so good at Suppenküche in San Francisco.) We paid for our drinks and looked for suckling pig elsewhere.

Even though I grew up in south Florida, where roast pig abounds, I've never had one so good as the cochinillo (suckling pig) at el Meson.

Staff were gracious and welcoming to two tourists. Cochinillo was sublime. Whole suckling pig is roasted so the skin is crisp on the surfaces, but moist and flavorful next to the meat. You are served an ample portion of the ribcage. At this age many of the small ribs have not calcified, so they are tender to chew. Succulent and delicious. Tripa are also cooked low and slow so they melt on your tongue. Sauce is majestic. Our waiter was very cordial and we took his advice to close with the ponche, and we were very glad we did. A soufflée with a wisp of orange zest in the ice cream was the perfect closer. Bravo.

Duque is unique in its heritage, its ambience (indoor, white linen table cloths, nicer dresses wait staff), and the offering of the traditional suckling pig. We made reservations and due to a goof on my part we had to delay it a day. They accommodated without a problem and communicated through email. That said, we ate at around 2 pm and I don't think we would have had a problem if we just walked in without a reservation, but this probably depends on the tourist volume and season. My wife and I ordered the large beans and the suckling pig and salad. It was A LOT of food. We really enjoyed the large beans and the traditional cooking approach using a pork extras broth. The suckling pig lives up to its reputation. The meat was super tender and the skin was very crispy. My wife and I couldn't eat all of our portions, but what we did eat was fantastic. We also had the beer and it was quite good. We ended the meal with coffee, which was very good. We did not eat dessert but it looks like they had some good ones. We probably stayed there for about 90 minutes, which was a nice way to take a break from the beautiful but dominant sunshine. This was probably the most expensive place in Segovia to eat, but we thought it was a great experience and value. As a final thought, we didn't do a very good job as English speakers trying to communicate in Spanish, but with context clues and their willingness to talk a bit in English we managed.

Fortunately, I was able to stumble upon La Bodega del Barbero, who offered a much more affordable option for me. The restaurant was very much a hole-in-the-wall. During lunch hours, it wasn't completely packed with folks, and part of it may be due to it being so tucked away. It is a small restaurant with limited seating for large groups and a bar area, and is away from the bustling streets of Segovia. At 15€, I was able to try out a roasted pork leg with fries, a nice glass of refreshing Tinto de Verano, delicious potato pie, and some toasted bread. The pork took 20 minutes to prepare, and it came out absolutely juicy and delicious. I was taken back by how large the portion size was for the leg- perhaps they were accommodating for my American self. Overall, really enjoyed my lunch here and am glad I was able to drop in for a taste of Segovia.

The Tour Guide was raving about the House/Area Specialty -Suckling Pig (Cochinillo Asado). Two levels for seating and 1st level was sold out so we were seated on the lower level. What stood out was all of the options on the menu. So many interesting choices. The Soup (Sopa a La Castellana) was highly recommended and looked good from others who ordered it but given the heavy of the main course we decided against it. We ordered the Suckling Pig and Grilled Turbot. The Suckling Pig wasn't as big of an entree once you get the meat off the bones. It was tasty and would describe it as an elevated Pulled Pork. That said, for me, it was one to try and not sure I would order again. The Turbot was excellent and was enjoyed even if it wasn't a filet. Ponche Segoviano for dessert was also recommended-looked good but no room. Service was okay. Again, they were quite busy so some delays. Overall, looks like the spot in town for Suckling pig/Roast Lamb and a few interesting creations.

On our recent visit, we were welcomed by Alberto Cándido, the 92-year-old son of the restaurant's renowned founder, who proudly showed us the medal he was given by King Juan Carlos I, which passed on the title of Mesonero Mayor of Castile after his father's death. We were seated at a window table in the beautiful Álvaro de Luna salon to enjoy delicious entrees of Grilled Sea Bass, Battered Hake in Salsa Verde, Pork Snout with Mushrooms and, of course, the famous Cochinillo Asado. Paired with a delicious house red wine and followed by slices of rich chocolate cake and apple pie, the meal was outstanding, as was the service. Fixed lunch menu for €10? I'll bite!…read more My mom and I followed the recommendations in Rick Steve's book for a lunch spot, and it took us FOREVER to find a place in Segovia that was open. The map from the tourist's office is not drawn to scale! We finally came across this place and were won over by the fixed lunch menu. For the first course, we could choose between a lentil salad and carbonara spaghetti. For the second course, we could choose between cured ham and stewed peppers or meatballs, both served with a side of fried potato slices (not quite like American french fries). For dessert, we could choose among flan, chocolate cake with cream, cinnamon custard, and rice pudding. For drinks, we could choose a bottle of water of a bottle of wine! All of this for €10, tax included! My mom and I were incredibly grateful that our waitress knew a decent amount of English (I had whipped out my iPhone to Google translate the menu). We both ordered the lentil salad, which was tastier than both of us had expected. My mom ordered the sliced ham and I ordered the meatballs, both of which were saltier (prompting us to drink our fancy glass bottle of water) than expected. The meatballs were tastier than the ham in my opinion, but the stewed green peppers that came with my mom's dish were the highlights of the meal! For dessert, I chose the rice pudding while my mom chose the cinnamon custard. Hers was better than mine since it was not as sweet and the flavor wasn't as overpowering, but I wished I had ordered the flan and she wished she had ordered the chocolate cream cake hahaha! All in all, a charming place with good food at a merciful price!
