Carmelized French toast
Julie N.

This is the place to get suckling pig and view the 2000 year old Roman aqueducts right outside your window don't miss the carmelized French toast for dessert.

Their Cochinillo! (Dare I say better than what we had at Botín??!!!)

Highly recommend this iconic restaurant seated right at the foot of the equally as iconic Roman Aqueduct. We had plans to visit Segovia as part of our Madrid itinerary so I made reservations for 2:30 pm the evening before and found there to be many time slots still up for grabs despite the roaring summer crowds we've been encountering. We had first time slots for the Alcazar and the Cathedral so by the time we finished and made the descent back into the Old Town it was only noon-ish. The restaurant doesn't start service until 1 pm but the attendant happily changed my 2:30 pm reservation to 1 pm after informing him we'd like to eat earlier. We of course got their signature cochinillo - might be a hard take but we agreed it was way better than the one we had at Botín. This was moist and tender and melted perfectly in your mouth. Skin was crisped perfection and the juices were delish for sopping up with crusty bread. We also got their tortilla which was a nice starter. Top that off with some tinto de veranos and it was a memorable lunch. The man the myth the legend himself even came around to deliver a speech then cut into the cochinillo with the plate before tossing it in the air! Such a great historical restaurant right at the heart of the aqueduct. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Segovia!

The tradition of chopping the suckling pig.

An amazing restaurant (and town) to visit! Located right next to the famous Roman Aqueduct, you can literally look out the window and see it a stones throw away, this restaurant has been in the owners family for many generations and continues the traditions that have made this place a gem. Everyone in Toledo and Madrid told us we must go there for the suckling pig, and yes, it was delicious! We also had a plate of chorizo as an appetizer, which was also amazing. Make sure you have reservations before going, and remember that the large meal in Spain is in the early afternoon around 2:30ish.

Was a really really cool Resturant inside. It's like a maze and so many different eye catching things each and every way you look. We went with one of my customers who are local to Spain and gave us a tour of Segovia and said we have to eat at the original Resturant of Segovia which we did and excited that the owner who is 90 came in spoke cut the pig and tossed the plate. The food is delicious but different than what we are use too.

Location, location, location...Mesón de Cándido is right by the aqua duct for some incredible views, especially if you sit outside. We sat inside. Allegedly this family restaurant has been in operation since 1905, and the pleasant vintage ambiance attested to that. I think it was the owner that warmly greeted us and sat us down at a table with an awesome view of the aqua duct. But service was slow after that...Spanish time? Segovia is known through Spain for its delicacy of roast suckling pig and its supposedly delicious. Now I'm no vegan and I love bacon, pork chops and pork ribs...but I just can't bring myself to eat baby pigs. So we had chicken and fish instead: €20 BACALAO A LA PARRILLA(Cod in a red sauce?)...pretty good and sizeable piece of cod in a distinctive and delectable sauce, but it didn't include any veggies or starches. €16 POLLO DE CORRAL EN PEPITORIA(Chicken in a creamy green sauce?)...also pretty good with a delightful sauce, but again no sides include. That's extra! But the sauces was tasty enough to finish with the bread. Prices are high for Spain, but compared to the rest of Europe its not that expensive. And its a touristy location, so its expected.

We stayed till late evening for the dinner. The night view for ancient aqueduct from restaurants window was very good. We ordered the famous cochinillo - roasted pig, they even provide Chinese menu. When the pig was brought up to our table, waiter cut it for us, telling me to listen to the sound when knife cut through the skin, it was very crispy on outer layer and tasted good. It was nice experience for our 30 wedding anniversary.

Staff were gracious and welcoming to two tourists. Cochinillo was sublime. Whole suckling pig is roasted so the skin is crisp on the surfaces, but moist and flavorful next to the meat. You are served an ample portion of the ribcage. At this age many of the small ribs have not calcified, so they are tender to chew. Succulent and delicious. Tripa are also cooked low and slow so they melt on your tongue. Sauce is majestic. Our waiter was very cordial and we took his advice to close with the ponche, and we were very glad we did. A soufflée with a wisp of orange zest in the ice cream was the perfect closer. Bravo.

Duque is unique in its heritage, its ambience (indoor, white linen table cloths, nicer dresses wait staff), and the offering of the traditional suckling pig. We made reservations and due to a goof on my part we had to delay it a day. They accommodated without a problem and communicated through email. That said, we ate at around 2 pm and I don't think we would have had a problem if we just walked in without a reservation, but this probably depends on the tourist volume and season. My wife and I ordered the large beans and the suckling pig and salad. It was A LOT of food. We really enjoyed the large beans and the traditional cooking approach using a pork extras broth. The suckling pig lives up to its reputation. The meat was super tender and the skin was very crispy. My wife and I couldn't eat all of our portions, but what we did eat was fantastic. We also had the beer and it was quite good. We ended the meal with coffee, which was very good. We did not eat dessert but it looks like they had some good ones. We probably stayed there for about 90 minutes, which was a nice way to take a break from the beautiful but dominant sunshine. This was probably the most expensive place in Segovia to eat, but we thought it was a great experience and value. As a final thought, we didn't do a very good job as English speakers trying to communicate in Spanish, but with context clues and their willingness to talk a bit in English we managed.

Fortunately, I was able to stumble upon La Bodega del Barbero, who offered a much more affordable option for me. The restaurant was very much a hole-in-the-wall. During lunch hours, it wasn't completely packed with folks, and part of it may be due to it being so tucked away. It is a small restaurant with limited seating for large groups and a bar area, and is away from the bustling streets of Segovia. At 15€, I was able to try out a roasted pork leg with fries, a nice glass of refreshing Tinto de Verano, delicious potato pie, and some toasted bread. The pork took 20 minutes to prepare, and it came out absolutely juicy and delicious. I was taken back by how large the portion size was for the leg- perhaps they were accommodating for my American self. Overall, really enjoyed my lunch here and am glad I was able to drop in for a taste of Segovia.

The Tour Guide was raving about the House/Area Specialty -Suckling Pig (Cochinillo Asado). Two levels for seating and 1st level was sold out so we were seated on the lower level. What stood out was all of the options on the menu. So many interesting choices. The Soup (Sopa a La Castellana) was highly recommended and looked good from others who ordered it but given the heavy of the main course we decided against it. We ordered the Suckling Pig and Grilled Turbot. The Suckling Pig wasn't as big of an entree once you get the meat off the bones. It was tasty and would describe it as an elevated Pulled Pork. That said, for me, it was one to try and not sure I would order again. The Turbot was excellent and was enjoyed even if it wasn't a filet. Ponche Segoviano for dessert was also recommended-looked good but no room. Service was okay. Again, they were quite busy so some delays. Overall, looks like the spot in town for Suckling pig/Roast Lamb and a few interesting creations.

Fixed lunch menu for €10? I'll bite!…read more My mom and I followed the recommendations in Rick Steve's book for a lunch spot, and it took us FOREVER to find a place in Segovia that was open. The map from the tourist's office is not drawn to scale! We finally came across this place and were won over by the fixed lunch menu. For the first course, we could choose between a lentil salad and carbonara spaghetti. For the second course, we could choose between cured ham and stewed peppers or meatballs, both served with a side of fried potato slices (not quite like American french fries). For dessert, we could choose among flan, chocolate cake with cream, cinnamon custard, and rice pudding. For drinks, we could choose a bottle of water of a bottle of wine! All of this for €10, tax included! My mom and I were incredibly grateful that our waitress knew a decent amount of English (I had whipped out my iPhone to Google translate the menu). We both ordered the lentil salad, which was tastier than both of us had expected. My mom ordered the sliced ham and I ordered the meatballs, both of which were saltier (prompting us to drink our fancy glass bottle of water) than expected. The meatballs were tastier than the ham in my opinion, but the stewed green peppers that came with my mom's dish were the highlights of the meal! For dessert, I chose the rice pudding while my mom chose the cinnamon custard. Hers was better than mine since it was not as sweet and the flavor wasn't as overpowering, but I wished I had ordered the flan and she wished she had ordered the chocolate cream cake hahaha! All in all, a charming place with good food at a merciful price!
