I've been wanting to try Famena's for the longest time since I started working downtown in October. Unfortunately the day I wanted to visit they were slapped with a health code violation and were shut down for almost 2 months. Famena's finally reopened in early December and I was able to grab lunch for takeout last Friday before the holidays. The number one item recommended by my coworkers was the ox tail, rice and peas. It used to only be available in selected days, but because of the pandemic the owners made it available everyday. The cost may seem a bit steep at $23, but it's worth it when you see the portion size. You'd have to be extremely hungry to finish the food off in one go...which I barely finished! The ox tail was extremely flavourful and juicy; I can definitely see where the hype is cause I've seriously never had food this filling and satisfying. Famena's is on Doordash during these tough times, but please, for the love of god, order from them directly. They deserve your support right now and are barely hanging on. I wanna try their roti next time, but moreover I really hope this place survives the pandemic cause I intend to be a regular here as much as I can and get to know the wonderful owners more.

The chef and his wife, who own the establishment, are also just the nicest people you'd ever meet. He has over 2 decades of experience as a chef and it shows. The good is also authentically Jamaican, because he's actually Jamaican (not of Jamaican parentage or went to visit Jamaica). He's from St. Elizabeth and grew up in Mandeville. I'd go back to Winnipeg just to have this again.

Once I was seated and we had ordered the server proceeded to tell us they had a reservation shortly for this table. Then why didn't you say anything before I was seated and ordered or move us to another table. And the whole time I was trying to stuff food into me we were getting dirty looks from all the servers. I get that it is a pain to have people sit for a bit but we were trying to have a meal and a visit. I guess next time we will got somewhere that allows us to eat slow and relax My friend gave the server her AMEX to pay. She came back to the table and said sorry it didn't go through. How embarrassing for my friend. She used another card. Later called the restaurant and was told they don't accept AMEX. So why didn't the server say that. Instead she said it didn't go through and embarrassed her for no reason. Luckily she was with friends who understood not business clients. This one is located in the Smart Centres Kenaston - in the strip mall section that's across from the Home Depot section There's a large dine in area inside but I always get my food to-go. I usually get the Opa Platter - you get one skewer, rice pilaf, lemon potatoes and greek or caesar salad with pita. Service is always excellent at Opa - I've always had nice chats with the staff here and at the Polo Park one. It's not easy to say that for a fast food franchise but I really find the people to be nice and engaging.
