This is the best typewriter store and owner in maybe the whole of the United States. Finally found the exact electric typewriter Smith Corona 1970s that I wrote my first book on and now I'm using it daily. Amazing place. read more

I needed my typewriter serviced quickly for a gig and Bill was able to fix it in a timely manner. Amazing experience. He was a lifesaver and the typewriter works so much better than before! In 2026, there are very few options for people who need anything typewriter-related--how lucky are we that one of the only options is so great, experienced, and accommodating! read more

You know when you meet that someone who is an expert in their field? That's how it is at Mesa Typewriter Exchange. Bill really knows his stuff and isn't afraid of sharing his knowledge. read more

This business is fantastic. Brought in a typewriter from around 1960 which I purchased at a thrift shop. Thought it might need a tune up and a new ribbon. He looked it over, tested the keys and other functions and said all it needed was a new ribbon. He mentioned that the new ribbons were on plastic wheels, but mine still had the metal wheels, so he transferred the new ribbon onto the existing metal wheels. Cost me about $10 for the visit. Wow! Now that's service. Highly recommend Mesa Typewriter Exchange. read more

I so pleased to find this reputable typewriter repair place. I purchased my vintage Royal #10 about 15 years ago and I held off getting it cleaned and serviced all these years because I didn't feel confident in taking it to just any typewriter repair shop. Reading the reviews on Yelp about Mesa Typewriter Exchange was enough to prompt me to make the drive and take my vintage Royal in and meet with the owner. Within a few minutes of chatting I knew that I had finally found the place to service my beloved typewriter. They are very professional, asked me questions about my typewriter and offered advice such as making sure that I keep my original type ribbon spools. Mesa Exchange showed a real interest in my typewriter. It took about 5 weeks for the turn around but I am so pleased and will only take my vintage Royal typewriter to Mesa Exchange. Interest in typewriters has only grown in the last 10 years and if you are looking for professional service, advice and knowledge, look no further that Mesa Typewriter Exchange!! read more

I was visiting a friend in Scottsdale and dropped in there a couple of years ago. I was impressed with the selection and the fact they still offered them. Their repair possibilities is a real plus. I enjoyed the conversation with the owner, Bill, and purchased a typewriter. I grew up on typewriters before there were computers. I still use an electric for a daily diary that I keep. I hope to drop in again and that the business continues. read more

Bill did a great job on my Olympia SM9 typewriter. He went above and beyond, even creating a part himself.

I flew in to Phoenix from Dallas to have lunch with my mom and I brought my Wards signature typewriter made by brother. I was welcomed into the shop and Bill diagnosed my issue in minutes and was upfront with the price (fair) and set a time frame. He even issued me a claim check--how cool! His shop is filled with so much history. If these typewriters could talk wow! VERY VERY IMPRESSED read more

Fantastic little typewriter repair shop. We dropped off two typewriters to be fixed. When we got one home (in WA) after about two sentences it quit working. We gave him a call and he face timed with my son to trouble shoot it, quick easy fix, he even assisted on his day off! I highly recommend this shop! read more

I actually did a school project on Mesa Typewriter Exchange and I had the best filming experience at the store! Bill is a character and a typewriter whisperer. Following my project, I actually brought my own typewriter in for a check up and Bill made sure to get it up and running smoother. Whether you're looking for your first typewriter or just need repairs done on your own machine fixed -- this place is a dream. Feel free to check out my project below for more views of the store and get to know Bill! https://youtu.be/0KdFRqgyw10 read more

Bill refurbished my Royal Empress after it had languished in my garage for years. It now works as I remember it did during my college days. Because I had to drive from Tucson, on the day I picked up my Royal, Bill also did quick repairs on two manual portables I have. Extremely reasonable prices, too. I highly recommend. read more

If you have ANY typewriter issues/questions GO SEE BILL. I am totally new to the typewriter world, and felt nervous or embarrassed to have questions about my typewriter. The moment I showed up to the shop Bill was so welcoming, and so educational. I cannot gush enough about this shop. Bill thank you for all your help, encouragement, and generosity. I will be back. 10/10, two thumbs up, 5 stars/ 5 stars. Amazing. read more

Amazing gem of a place that helped restore my old typewriter. Great customer service from skilled person. Definitely recommend this place for purchase and repairs. read more

You don't have a lot of alternatives in this department, so thank the heavens that only viable typewriter repair shop around is stocked with a lot of fascinating machines, a lot of history, and a sagacious store-owner who seems to know his way around any writing machine you put in front of him. Also spent some time helping me get familiarized with my first typewriter that I had brought in to have the ribbon changed. This is a great shop. read more

Let me start by first expressing my amazement that there are, as of now, no Yelp reviews for such a unique place. How can it be that this hidden gem of a store has evaded exposure? My guess would be that, after visiting, its clientele chooses never again to type on a boring old laptop. That being said, I'm the sort of person who is petrified of venturing into niche shops - including, but not limited to: cobblers, tailors and violin stores - for fear that my absolute lack of knowledge on the subject will be cripplingly obvious. But, with a troublesome typewriter and less than 24 hours before Valentine's Day, I overcame this fear and called up Mesa Typewriter Exchange. One of the benefits of these labor-of-love sort of stores is the unparalleled customer service, and Bill was no exception. He offered to meet me at the store at 7 PM, well past normal business hours, and when I showed up he was cheerful and excited to see my machine. Bill is a contagious mix of enthusiastic, knowledgeable, patient and unpretentious. Within a matter of minutes he had replaced the ribbon and had my typewriter working as good as new. The shop itself is overflowing with typewriters of all sorts and sizes, from all decades and in all conditions. The fact that someplace like this exists, undiscovered, in the heart of downtown Mesa is a modern miracle, and anyone and everyone within 30 miles of this place should, at the very least, stop in for a look around, if not to fall in love with a typewriter of their very own. read more

Um this place is amazing. As my never-ending love affair with outdated technology continues, it's becoming increasingly difficult to find anyone that can repair them. I've had my typewriter for about seven years and finally decided to get a new ribbon. I called in and the owner was very helpful. The replacement was only about $9 and he changed it out for me. He even fixed a key that hadn't worked for who knows how long. The owner definitely loves his job and it shows. He showed me about five typewriters and had me test each one out and I could feel his enthusiasm. Apparently he's been doing this for about forty years. Truly amazing, this is what local business is about. Even though it's a bit of a drive from downtown, I will gladly make the trip. read more

Really knowledgeable guy who really enjoys his work and definitely knows what he's doing. It appears he makes a good living but isn't doing this for the money, only for the love of typewriters. I got a free estimate, free advice, and a solid place to go with all my typewriters needs. Would highly recommend of you're looking to buy or repair or maintain your typewriter. read more

I can't believe there aren't a lot of reviews for Bill! He is an AWESOME man and KNOWS typewriters. He fixed up my smith-corona beautifully and has supplied me with ribbon for my others. By the way, if you bring in your typewriter with you,Bill will put in your ribbon for you(it's quite difficult sometimes). His store also has MANY different typewriters and can tell you stories about each one. read more

Stopped into Mesa Typewriter Exchange when I randomly got a typewriter (my first) while visiting Gilbert over the summer. I gave Bill a call to inquire about getting it checked up as I know nothing about typewrites but heard they need to be taken in occasionally. I'm from Idaho and there isn't a single typewriter store there so it was amazing for Bill to let me stop on by the next day. He took a look at my "new" smith-corona sterling and explained to me all the keys and settings on it since I really didn't know much. He shared quite a bit of knowledge with me that definitely helped my typewriter journey. He said my machine was in great shape and really didn't need anything! It was really nice for him to take time to help me and give it a check up before I had to head back home a few days later. It's been just about a month since I got that typewriter and I already got typewriter #2. I will definitely bring it down over the holidays just for Bill to help out with a bit of troubleshooting. THAT is how much I value the service at Mesa Typewriter Exchange! read more

One of my favorite little shops. I have purchased three typewriters from this Exchange and had one typewriter, which I purchased in a different state, repaired here. All of those experiences were fantastic. The owner is informative and extremely helpful. I go in blind most of the time, not sure if I am going to buy another typewriter or not. The owner shows me what's available, but never tries to sell me on something. He gives me time and space to see if the machine is right for me. It's great service, a great novelty product, and quality machines. read more

I bought an typewriter for my daughter for Xmas this year, first thing on her list to Santa. While I was cleaning it up I had a problem. Not knowing what to do at this point I went to google and amazingly I found Mesa Typewriter Exchange. I took the machine in immediately and explained this was a Xmas gift from Santa and I really needed it before the 24th which gave him only a week. The day after I dropped it off he called me and let me know it was all ready to go. What a lifesaver! I picked it up the next day and the final bill was less than the estimate since it was an easier fix than he thought it would be. You don't get customer service like this very often anymore and I really appreciate it! read more

Very very nice/wide selection of typewriters. Such a nice guy who runs the place, almost couldn't believe that it's been open for more then 60 years. (Might be 80, bad memory). Family owned and operated, took in my baby in a couple Monday's ago and am surprised on how fast we was to diagnose the problems and was very happy with how he was able to give me a general area on how much it would be, highly recommend if you are in the Phoenix area. read more
