Went here yesterday because I finally wanted to get some good quality yarn from a small business. The interior was absolutely charming and cute, had that cute country charm. The owner was an absolute sweetheart who helped me pick out my yarn. I come here every week for knitting lessons with Karunna (owner). It's a great group of ladies, all at differing levels of experience, some longtime and some new. The store has a huge variety of excellent quality, beautiful yarns for crochet and knitting, needlepoint supplies, and embroidery threads. I like a store that's selling something besides $30 hand-dyed skeins because I've only been knitting a couple of years. Karunna is a 40-year owner of this business and really knows her stuff. Merribee Needlearts is a little bit hidden in a neighborhood. My GPS directed me without issue, but I did wonder for a minute or two. I usually shop at a different store that carries a lot of "yuppie" yarn (alpaca from a single animal, wool from a Bluefaced Leicester sheep, locally spun, hand dyed yarn, etc.), but not such a big selection of the big manufacturers' yarn. I sought out Merribee Needlearts because the website advertises that it's the largest shop in the area. I was looking for a specific yarn in certain colors (to knit up a gift scarf). The manufacturer's website indicated that Merribee is a retailer. I was looking forward to supporting a Local Yarn Shop. The owner was quite nice when I arrived shortly after lunchtime on a Friday. I was the only customer in the shop, and she walked around with me to turn on the lights and point out the yarns. There were plenty of skeins available. Most of the yarn was still in the wholesale-lot bags (the big clear bags that hold 12 or so skeins). These bags were stacked in cubby-style shelves all around the store. Some of the bags were opened and people had purchased a couple of skeins. I suppose that system helps keep dye lots together and keeps the yarn clean, but the display didn't really show off the fibers. I felt like a naughty child when I opened a bag to feel the yarn. I was a little disappointed by the yarns that were carried. Don't get me wrong, if the shop carries your preferred yarn, it's a nice place and you're all set. But I was looking for Cascade 220 Superwash, and the store doesn't carry it. In fact, they carried very little superwash wool. There were a lot of acrylic and acrylic blend options. But I can get that at Michael's for a much lower cost. It's not what I'm looking for at a LYS. I found some alpaca and alpaca blends (from large, well known companies), there were some silk and silk blend yarns, but I didn't really find a lot of specialty yarn. I am a sucker for cottage-industry, local products, and that's just not what this shop carries. That combined with a lack of superwash choices made me sad. The owner was nice, and if I had different yarn preferences, I'd definitely return. But the shop doesn't really cater to the yuppie knitter who is willing to pay a premium for the single farm yarns or wool from a specific breed of sheep. So I'm glad to know that the shop is there, but it won't be replacing my usual LYS. read more

I've been a customer of Merribee for nearly 20 years. I will ditto the previous review with these additions. I dabble in knitting (I took lessons at Merribee), I am an avid crocheter, I embroider, and I absolutely love needlepoint. The wide selection of canvases is the largest I've seen in one place and that includes travel too. Every holiday and topic is represented. Their Needlearts threads are to die for. Oh my goodness don't get me started. Suffice it to say, I don't have to shop anyplace else for the threads I need for any canvas Merribee carries. I continue to take classes and enjoy the sit and sip times together with other needle artists. I've made friends here too while sitting in the very pleasant atmosphere sharing our needlework.
