First off parking sucks, unless you have the first appt of the day be prepared to look for parking. You do not want to miss the opportunity to get in and get settled. As you enter the room katreas the hostess energy is just calm and collective. I was late but able to instant stop and take it all in. He voice, tone, welcoming approach was just want I needed to get it together after hunting for parking for 25min. The service was good. Lots of touch and I have done quite a few facials, about 17 now. This girl knew what she was doing very comfortable and focused. Her touch was very consistent and constant. I would like more pressure but I did ask. I will next time. Ive schedule another appt with her to get a more detailed service and hopefully better results. The products felt great. read more

Amazing experience all around. Iris, who is also the owner is both professional and easy to talk to. I am new to the island and town of Hilo and needed a reliable, clean, comfortable place to get my waxes done. I booked an appointment online and quickly received a text ( which I stated was the best way to contact me). We made the appointment and I was in within a week of booking. I got a Brazilian wax and it came out awesome. I had read the one review from a few months ago and was very skeptical but decided to take my chances because every other review spoke so highly of Mermaid Spa and Iris. I booked a facial for my "post"-Covid treat. I was very impressed with this highly personalized, well-appointed little spa. From the waiting area -- with mermaid books, natch -- to the warm reception and genuine interest in what my skin needed, I really felt pampered and listened to. My skin looked great, and I picked a product to take home as well. That Iris makes her own products is impressive and special. Loved the jazz in the background too. Aloha, If you are looking to get a Brazilian wax (totally bare "down there" including the derrière) Mermade Spa is definitely not the place to go. To preface, I have had many Brazilian wax treatments and NEVER have I left a salon/spa with the following: 1.) Not being 100% bare "down there" and on my derrière (missed a section and my derrière) 2.) In really bad pain (had to stay home and lay in bed with ice "down there" for hours). 3.) Extremely red and had slight bruising on my bikini line. 4.) Never had such hot wax applied "down there"....it literally BURNED ME & I GOT BLISTERING!!!!! 5.) Iris also used strip wax on my entire area "down there" as opposed to using a hard wax near the center of the vaginal area where the skin in naturally thinner. Overall, I would NOT recommend anyone go here for a Brazilian wax treatment. Though Iris is nice and probably does a lot of other awesome treatments I would steer clear of Mermade Spa for any Brazilian wax treatments if I were you. Mahalo, Jade read more

I have done lash extensions with Iris for a solid 2 years straight and love how natural the brown silk lashes look and feel. Her newest element is the apothecary bar where you can go in and mix your own skin care products with her amazing ingredients. This is a wonderful, professional and quaint spa in the Heart of Hilo. It is tucked away in an office and is appt-only. There is a sign at the building with the phone number. There is no store front so keep that in mind if you are trying to for a walk-in. It is run solely by Iris Markham- Huddy. She is fully licensed and makes a lot of her own natural products. She also uses and sells mostly (maybe only?) locally made products. I bought her Tahitian Jasmin solid perfume and I also got the Ola lip-balm both I LOVE and have been using every day since my visit 2 weeks ago. Also very reasonably priced for the quality I got a 1hr facial. It was very relaxing and Iris paid great attention to detail to make sure i was comfortable. The room was very clean and smelled beautiful and there was really nice, calming music playing. Everything she did felt wonderful and when I was done my skin was glowing and felt better than it ever has from any other facial. She used local honey, steam treatments, a sugar scrub and lots of lovely little things in between. I felt so pampered. She also gave me some wonderful suggestions on how to maintain my skin for my complexion. I have been using the toner she suggested and my skin has tone and texture has improved greatly. I was only back in Hilo for a visit. I am located in LA and I have to say, Mermade/Iris is better than any spa I know of in Hilo and most of LA. I wish I didn't live so far away. Her prices are comparable to spas and waxing studios on Oahu which didn't put me over budget. Came to Hilo to visit a friend and fell in love with her lashes. So I had to call Iris that same day. Her schedule was packed but she was kind enough to squeeze me in before her (first) client for the following day. She was very gentle and my lashes looked amazing! I was always under the impression that lash extensions fall off after 2-3 weeks and you'd have to come in for refills but mine stayed on for 1 month!! If you're new to lash extensions, you might hate them at first because you can't rub your eyes and you have to be more careful when applying and removing make up. But after you're used to it, you'll love it. They make your eyes pop so oftentimes it looks like you're already wearing some makeup. Honestly, I don't wear makeup as often anymore so definitely worth the money. I later learned that the reason they stayed on so well is because Iris used single lashes - 1 lash glued to your 1 real lash vs. other places might use 2 lashes (V-shape) or 3 lashes (W-shape) glued to your 1 real lash. Single lashes hold better because they're lighter but they don't look as full since they're more spread out. Conversely, 2 or 3 lashes will look fuller but they might fall off quicker. read more

I love getting facials from Iris! She makes many of her own products using fresh fruits and she also uses a local facial care line that is wonderful for my skin and makes me feel all eco-happy. My skin was constantly breaking out before I started getting facials, but receiving a facial once a month from Iris has cleared up my skin almost completely. Extractions can be unpleasant, but Iris manages to make them a lot less painful than most other places I've been, and I never leave with the awful red blotches I used to experience- she really knows what she is doing. Iris also usually offers some sort of special so it is reasonably affordable. Highly recommend getting a facial from Iris for both deep cleaning and relaxation! read more
