    Found this gem through research…read more The food was well presented and more importantly they were all quite TASTY! It is French cuisine but they encourage to share food. It was perfect for us :) We had 5 people in total and ordered a lot of food. Total 12 dishes on the menu plus 5-6 deserts. We ended ordering almost all dishes. 4 entrees and 5 mains and 2 desserts. Entree 1. Chicken liver 2. Scollops 3. Pumpkin 4. Custard Main 1. Omelette 2. Chicken ( quite good and crispy kale leaves was amazingly good ) 3. Duck leg ( not on the menu and it was a bit dry) 4. Steak and fries ( yummy fries and texture of the meat was amazing ) 5.gnocchi and pork Dessert 1. Chocolate mousse 2. Caramel and coffee custard The place is located inside of a hotel and the entrance is via the hotel lobby. There was also outdoor sittings and I cannot help to imagine how nice it would be in Summer to just sit outside and have a nice meal here. ( today was super cold maybe this is what made me miss summer already ) I was too full so had to get a long black to go with desserts. It was amazing tooooo. How lovely and nice little surprise to know they care about the coffee too ! Who would thought of that ! But they did ! I was so happy to end the meal with that coffee and beautiful sweets. Last but not least , service ! I love talking about experience and service. I think it is one thing which makes a difference between one place to another . It also tells people a lot about the owner of the business . It was great service and better than a lot of places and compare to some well known fine dining they had some outstanding services. However I personally felt it can be even better, the lady who severed our table put my main dish knife onto this cabbage that was dropped when we were eating entree. I had to move it .... And when each of us were thanking her for pouring water and etc , she was not responding to all of our appreciation . she would skip and just say you are welcome to some people at our table . I know I am picky Overall! Amazing !

Booking was easy, and upon arrival for Sunday lunch were were pleasantly surprised at the friendly and open room at the top of the stairs. Being one level up on Victoria road cuts the road noise enough to lets us enjoy the family meal. The menu was simple and varied and everyone was able to select entrees and mains that were to their liking. The service was exceptional. Just the right amount of help and direction re the dishes and silent delivery of drinks and meals. We particularly enjoyed the Beef Burgundy pie and the Pan Roasted Mulloway fillet. Located on busy Victoria St, Darlinghurst, this stylish bistro is one of the better dining experiences i have had in Sydney, in a long time. The interior is elegant & the service is very friendly. The food was first class & the recommended bottle of wine perfect for us. To start, we had the most divine freshly shucked oyster with Champagne vinegar( twice!) as well as House smoked king salmon with beetroot, horseradish & chive chantilly. Mains my BF had a chargrilled steak which was cooked to perfection & I had the king salmon. Delicious. I fancy myself as a bit of a desert connoisseur & the Dark chocolate pavé with grillottes ice cream & cherry coulis, was amazing!!! A must try. I highly recommend trying tastevin. Its a real stand out & lovely dining experience!

So I did! They don't take reservations for their 5-6pm happy hour. You can only line up at 5pm when they open. We got there right before 5pm, and there were probably 10 to 12 people in line. Once the doors opened we were led downstairs to the bar area. It's a very dark, and feels like you've been transported to another time and place. We decided to try one of each of the food items on the happy hour: - Duck Parfait - Good. Classic French item and they do it well. - Brandade d'anguilles fumée - OK. I know it's eel, but wasn't very distinct from any other fish. My least favourite dish. - Saucisson Sec - Good. Simple. - Fleur de Courgette - Very good. Delicate and delicious. I should've ordered two of these. - Normandy Burger - Very good. The one item my friends raved about, and it was clear why. A burger with the best ingredients is hard to matched. I got the extra side of fries which is equally good. Best dish of the meal. Service was relatively good, except at one point they asked if I wanted mayo for my fries (very French) and I said yes, but it never came. Other than that, quite good. This was easily my favourite meal of my trip, holding up to high expectations. I would return on my next trip to Sydney.

I highly recommend getting here early to get a seat during Happy Hour and stay after to enjoy some live jazz after 6PM. The restaurant was easy to locate with a sign upfront. The entrance is just a door in the wall with spiraling stairs leading you to an underground jazz bar and restaurant. It's upscale and romantic, but several other people were dressed casually. We sat on a shared table with three other strangers until we ordered off the full menu and our Chicken Fricassée arrived. The service is top notch and everyone was attentive, polite, and kind. We started off with the happy hour menu and ordered the Duck Parfait. I didn't know what to expect. The croutons were crispy and delicate and the duck liver was easy to spread and airy. The Normandy Burger was juicy and the bread was fluffy. But the star of the night Chicken Fricassée - wow! Incredibly tender, juicy, and garlicy. The sauce had a mashed potato buttery, smooth texture. Absolute must get.

This coincidentally includes some of our favourite dishes - you cannot beat a classic. Macleay Street Bistro is set in a converted terrace house and on appearance the restaurant is your cliché French fine dining restaurant. White tablecloths with tables set impeccably with the crockery and wine glasses. The set up and decor may be classic French, however the music is modern and upbeat, as is the maître d, Clive. The service at this joint is extraordinarily professional, whilst still personable, with Clive providing plenty of character. He comes with a wealth of experience and it shows in leaps and bounds. This was one of the best dining and service experiences we have experienced in Sydney. What better way to start a meal than with a refreshing cocktail - a beautiful French martini - chambord, vodka and pineapple juice. A recommended start to your meal at Mcleay Street Bistro. Another traditional start to any bistro meal is Bread and Macleay St Bistro uses quality artisan producers to supply the restaurant. A French Baguette from Sonoma is accompanied by another Sydney favourite, Pepe Saya butter. We were visiting for their impressive celebratory six course degustation menu incorporating their classics to reflect on and celebrate their 35 years of operation. The First course was the pan seared scallops, prepared to perfection combining with added texture provided to the dish by the hazelnuts and an earthiness from the roast cauliflower and contrasted by the light cauliflower purée. This dish was paired with a Riesling, the Framingham from Marlborough New Zealand a sweet wine with strong flavours of lemon and rasins, this conjuring memories of lemon cordial, when you indulge and get a little heavy on the cordial. This wine nicely matched with the sweeness of scallops. For the Second course, we get hands on with the Macleay St Bistro organic grass fed eye fillet steak tartare with house made mini baguette. The plate is beautifully presented with a mound of thin strips of beef and an egg yolk on top that brings the dish together. This surrounded by little quenelles of Dijon, eschallot, Cornichon, Anchovy paste and capers. Break open the egg yolk, mix it with the beef strips, then combine other flavours to taste. This incredibly rich and beautiful tartare was paired with a Joseph Faiveley Pinot Noir From Burgundy, France. A lighter style red which helped cut through the richness of the tartare. What a fabulous pairing, they sure know their stuff here. The third course was a twice baked French onion soufflé with truffle butter and a wholemeal sourdough roll. This is comfort food, the perfect winter dish that will warm the soul. Light and fluffy, sitting in a pool of cheesy goodness, you most certainly need to try this. The flavours of this dish complimented by a Vincent girardin Chardonnay from Burgundy, France. The the wood flavours from the oaked chardonnay and the sweet onion and cheese of that twice bake soufflé were truly magnifique. The fourth course was a divine organic grass fed eye fillet with fresh parsley and sauce au poivre, a great cut of meat, cooked medium rare, it melts in your mouth. The wine of choice Mon Coeur, Syrah, Rhone valley, France. What else would you pair with a steak? The penultimate dish was the fifth course, a classic Macleay st bistro Creme brûlée Served with chateau la caussade Sainte Croix, Bordeaux, France. The perfect end to the meal. When you think you are finished, the staff bring our house made chocolate truffles, rich and beautiful. What a perfect dish to end on. For a meal that is truly special, do make a showing at Mcleay Street Bistro for the weekend lunch offer. A 6 course classic French menu for $90, for matching wine add $75. All items cooked to perfection and served with a great wine pairing. You receive an authentic French Bistro experience, make sure you bring your appetite and enjoy the experience that will have you embracing winter in Sydney with some comfort food and service that is equally comforting.
