    Adopted a poochon mix
    Thao H.

I adopted an unknown age poochon mix fur baby for only $110. The process took about 2 weeks. When you adopt, please ask about the dog health and dental condition. I'm just lucky that this fur baby is healthy, though he has a little dental issue.

I went in after checking out the website and photos, like you are supposed to do! I saw several fogs I liked. When I got there, three were already spoken for. One was just way too timid. I felt bad for it and felt like staff should have taken time to love on it, to reduce the fear. I know other shelter that will keep fearful ones in office areas to help with that, petting and touching them. Anyway, I wound up going home. A week later, I saw this young husky. Why his photo wasn't on website before I don't know. He had been there two months. There was also a border collie I liked, but it too had been spoken for. Im old and sort of crippled up. The worker was nice, kind to the dogs, saying hi to others. But at the same time, trying to discourage me from getting Sir Bouncealot! Lol! "Are you sure you can handle him! " " Lady, Im six ft tall and 200 pounds! I need him to help with my rehab and my hearing sucks. I need a furry doorbell and personal trainer!" It has been nearly a year now and I'm glad I fought to get him! He still won't come when called, but that is just husky DNA. I was prepared for it. Jumping Jack Flash-Jackie Blue-and sometimes JackA** is awesome! I take him Everywhere. He Does walk with a loose leash, steps right into back seat of car and stays there. He still doesnt get why pharmacy drive thru gives no food, lol! Thank you shelter for saving my Jack!

I have to admit that I am so livid right now. I could just yell. I don't understand what's wrong with the world today why do some people have to exercise such ignorance. We just moved to the area an I came into this animal shelter to find a dog for my family. I found a couple of dogs that would've been a great fit (I included pictures below). There was a guy working there at the counter and I asked him what is the process of adopting an animal. So he explained it to me. So I advised that I would like to proceed with the adoption process. He then advised me of the cost as If I guess I couldn't afford it. When I still agreed to proceed with the process he said that he was in the "middle of doing something else and he will get with me, but I can take a seat and wait." So I didn't find anything wrong with that at the time cause I was more concerned with bringing a pup home to my daughters and wife. I politely took my seat and waited, and waited, and waited some more. After, he finally Finished assisting the other person. I just knew he would pursue helping me out now. But NO, he decided to walk around and act like he was doing other things more important; like grabbing papers and putting them back where he grabbed them from etc. yet I continue to wait. But guys this took the cake. One of the dogs that was leaving the shelter pissed on the lobby floor and a young lady volunteer or employee not sure what she was but she advised that she will clean it up. Instead of helping me this guy decides to tell her "no I'll take care of it." now tell me everyone how am I supposed to feel when someone is blatantly showing me first of all that they don't want to help me and then show me that they would rather clean up a dogs piss than to assist me in the adoption process of a dog. I don't know I have to shake my head on this one I thought things done changed. But ignorance still exists.

We got our beautiful dog from this shelter almost a year ago! He is a loving member of the family and a great running partner! Adopt!

The ugh : Every time I am here I cannot see the animals for some reason. I have rarely found a helpful, friendly face at the counter. You have to check in and stand outside and wait for them to let you in. Even when no one is there, they take their time letting you in. I don't want to play into classic government employee stereotypes but they give off suspicious and unhelpful. They ask why you are there-- if you say you just wanna say hi to the animals-- you know just see some cute animals and give them some attention they seem deeply mistrustful of your visit. Last week we went and DID want to adopt (2) cats. We were there at 3:50. They close at 5. There was no one out front but we did the tedious QR code and stood there for a long while. Finally we just opened the door and peeked in. The 2 women there were visibly annoyed that we did this. There was no one waiting inside or out so why make us stand outside? We felt like this was some weird power dynamics thing. Vibes were OFF. They said it was too late to see the animals. We asked why when they were open still for a whole hour. They said they needed to tend to the animals. We didn't say anything but we thought --- then if you are essentially closed to the public, why does the sign say differently? It's not exactly a place that is on the way to anything, so we made a special trip out there. We asked if we could just look at the animals. We knew what we wanted: a bonded pair of senior cats to start our new cat fam because our older kitty just passed away. They said no, that we could only see animals until 4. I didn't say--- but thought-- well if you hadn't made us stand outside for 10 minutes we could've seen the animals. Bottom line from us: 1) deeply unwelcoming; 2) weirdly overprotective (and not in an I-adore-animals-way- more-like-it's-my-house-manner); 3) you have lots of animals- do you want them adopted or not?!?!?

We were able to pick Margo (female, 9 month old husky) from a list of available dogs. The dogs on the list have been behavior tested and are ready to go. The application process to take her out took about 15 minutes. But perhaps that was because all my littles were asking a million questions. They were so excited for this opportunity. The staff was friendly and approachable. They had great communication with my children and myself. Expectations were clear in the packet and we were kindly reminded to return her back by 5:00 pm. Margo was truly a joy. She walks great on a leash. Does well with children ages 3,5,6,7,9, and 11 as well as dogs: Martha (Biewer terrier) and Bruno (Cavapoo). She loves pup cups and good long walks. We really hope today will help her get adopted. She would be a great addition to any family. Upon return, she did a great job exiting the suburban. We purchased a bone for her as well as a toy. Receiving went great. My kids continued to ask a million questions and all of which were answered and encouraged by a friendly and knowledgeable staff. They even took a picture for us to remember our special day. We are already excited to do another Doggy Day Out. Without hesitation I strongly encourage others to experience this joy and make all the difference in these pups lives. What if your day out gets these sweet babies a new home, not only saving a life but bringing endless joy to someone else's! Thank you City of Turlock Animal Control for the Paws-itively great first forever moment/ experience.

I had good experiences with all the people I interacted with who worked there and with the animal control officer that I chatted with a lot while my dog was getting her included rabies shot. I also have VERY good experiences with animal control regarding me helping a goose I thought was injured, but it turned out that it was bird flu, sadly. I'm shocked by all the bad reviews here... I do notice that many of the bad reviews involve cats. The shelter really isn't able to help much with cats. I blame THE GENERAL PUBLIC for the cat issue. In 2025 there's no excuse for having your cat roaming around outdoors murdering all the birds and risking being hit by a car, etc. Trap-neuter-release programs are ineffective when there are so, so many cats that there are always plenty that will breed. What I CAN say about this shelter and cats is that they accepted a kitten from me (that I found in a park) even though they normally do not, because it was too young to survive on its own. Shelters are never going to be happy, pleasant places, and that's entirely humans' fault. It's disgusting how many people want to breed their dogs when so many are desperate for a home. I think the shelter's doing the best it can, but it's a losing battle, sadly.

When we first arrived there, we noticed how peaceful the place was - none of the incessant barking that you encounter at the local shelter. Their grounds were well maintained. We were told the dogs are let out to run in the yard for 3 hours a day. Their website has a bio on each pet so you can read a background info on each one. Obviously when it's an owner surrender they have more information on the pet, less so if the pet was a stray. But even then, they observe them while at the shelter to give you an idea what to expect. Their system makes it easy to adopt. I recommend sending an application in to get approved first. Once you've been approved, just call to make an appointment to see a dog or cat that you would like to meet. They will hold the dog or cat for you until your appointment. This is different from local city shelters where you might see a dog or cat listed online but it might be gone by the time you get there. Their adoption fee ($350) is fair as my dog was already microchipped and his shots were updated, except for rabies. I was a bit surprised that he was released without updating his rabies. All in all, I would recommend PetsNPals to anyone looking to adopt. They definitely care about the pets and try to make their shelter stay as pleasant as possible.
