A huge fan of local markets that showcase the freshest, local ingredients and products, when I travel I seek them out. Testaccio is a covered market and has lots of stalls featuring gorgeous produce, vibrant fruit, cured meats, pastries, olive oils, balsamic vinegars and pesto, and of course, cheese. I want it all! Testaccio feel more like a market where locals shop, and some tourists, as opposed to a tourist market like Campo de FiorI So I definitely prefer Testaccio. I mean, does anyone really buy the penis shaped bottles of limoncello? And why? In addition to sticking up on grocery items, you can have lunch here because several stalls sell food to order - soups, sandwiches, pasta, pizza, arancini, wine by the glass, gelato - where you can sit at a counter and eat or take it to go. There are so many varieties of prepared food that's it's perfect for groups when everyone doesn't want the same thing. I like to grab something to eat as I walk around and explore. If I was staying at a VRBO rather than a hotel, this is where I would shop so I could cook and utilize the tantalizing items available here.

Visited this huge indoor market around mid day. It is located in a quiet Rome residential area. It consists of many individual stores similar to a flea market in the U S. There are a large variety of clothing, household, food, deli, fruit & vegetable shops. We found food stores specializing in fresh pasta, meats, cheeses, large sandwiches, pizza, cold cuts, fried foods, and fresh bread. There was a large bakery/cafe serving coffee and pastries. We had lunch consisting of an antipasto and a panini sandwich of Italian meats. Some of the booths have a small counter and seats to eat there. If you can't find it here, it doesn't exist. The prices are very reasonable compared to the shops lining the streets of Rome. It is a good idea to check their hours of operation before traveling there.

The best part of this market is Barbara at the Vegan Food Stall (box 83). She was so thoughtful and friendly guiding us through her various and very delicious vegan cheeses. We bought four different kinds (she cut off larger pieces in her case) plus vegan crème fraise. We also bought yummy peanut butter. Go visit!

Very cool market, we came here on a walking "foodie" tour on the Testaccio. This was the birthplace of pasta, carbonara, most likely the best food on the planet; well, maybe tide for the best! Such an amazing neighborhood such a cool restaurant. We had a trial of several of their foods, but nothing compares to the pasta carbonara. the Ritz Carlton, this ain't butt that's like complaining that there aren't enough trees and grass in Jerusalem. Take a walking tour through this neighborhood and eat this food. It is more than worth it!

    Roman cauliflowers are insane!

I was taken to this market on a food tour of Rome. I think if you are going to visit an authentic market in Rome, this would be the best choice! There are many stalls with a variety of foods like meat and cheeses, suppli (a must), local art, produce, pastries and more. BUT it's also not super touristy like the market in Campo De Fiori- that market really didn't impress me because it was the same vendors selling the same products over and over ( if I see another penis pasta I swear to god lol). At this market, I saw way more locals because Testaccio is just not a really tourist hub. It was perfect!

Not enough vendors to make this place lively! Adequate merchants. They have pasta, suppli, meat shop, clothes, fruits and the basic necessities one would find at a market. I gravitated towards the healthy juice drinks and Aracini for some local suppli tries! There was the pasta and sandwiches that I wanted to do as well, but too much carbs for one setting! Live band music was playing, which made the place more festive!

We felt very fortunate to be brought here on a food tour, which meant we had some up-close encounters and tastings with several of the amazing vendors, such as the Husband & Wife who have been doing cheese together for over two decades. We got to feast our eyes on a colorful array of the freshest produce, meats, cheeses and more. A definite highlight of our tour and a place we would undoubtedly frequent regularly if we lived nearby.

Love this market. We had a great time trying out a few different food stalls and buying some fruits at the grocery stands. Everything is very reasonably priced. Definitely worth a visit!

Italian streets intertwine and loop. As usual, I walked in circles and wound up lost. Well, Mercato di Campana Amica del Circo Massimo turned out to be the truth and Bocca della Verita became the second point of interest. Fresh cheese, pastries, jams, cookies, prosciutto, you name it. They got it. I bought a porchetta sandwich for lunch. The real deal smacked in between two slices of artisanal bread. Layered with fragrant rosemary and other herbs and an abundance of crackly skin, it was as good as good gets. This is a great market to pick up fresh meats, cheeses, and vegetables. Each vendor is friendly and extremely proud of their product. I'd recommend buying presents for back home here but truthfully, you'd end up eating the goodies in your hotel bed. This market is only open twice a week (Saturday and Sunday) from 9 - 4 PM.

There was a type of radicchio I'd never seen before. And so many olives! But it's also challenging because you are limited in what and how much you can. It unless you are staying at a VRBO. Same with all of the olive oils, aged balsamic vinegars, pesto, jarred tomatoes, olives, regional pastas, meats and cheeses. OMG, I wanted it all! Since I love to cook and mostly cook Italian, it was pure torture! I did buy Parmigiana Reggiano aged 60 months because the taste and price was too good to pass up. But I didn't have room in my suitcase - weight wise - to buy the olive oil, aged balsamic and other food items I wanted. They had the typical tourist souvenirs like scarves, aprons, ceramic bowls, and a wonderful assortment of olive wood charcuterie boards and serving utensils. I collect them but didn't buy any because the prices were the same or higher than what I find at Trader Joe's or Marshall's! And again, too heavy to lug back to the states especially if they aren't unique or a fabulous price. There was even a stall selling a vegetable spiralizer like you see on late night tv commercials. He was demonstrating the plastic gadget and crowds were lined up watching. Cracked me up! Did you pick up any treasures while in a Rome? Yes, a plastic veggie spiralizer! Prices of many items were the same or higher than the shops. For example, a tiny bottle of 20 year old aged balsamic was $22 but $18 in a shop so know your prices and definitely try to barter. Mercato Campo de Fiori is located in a bustling area of the city so after shopping the market, you can stop in other shops and boutiques on all of the side streets. There are plenty of leather, clothing, jewelry, and stores selling ceramics and food products plus cafes and restaurants in abundance.

They are trying to revive an area and I hope the best for them however the last thing I want when I travel is to spend my time at a market looking at junk I can buy at a dolor store or Payless shoe store. I'm looking for something cool and local, not cheap and from china. Sure they have some meats and seafood but I didn't see one vendor that made any sandwiches fresh. Sure I stopped into one kitchen vendor that had some get products for the UK but not one thing in there did I see a made in Italy stamp. My advise is stay a bit north and go to to the Saturday and Sunday food market on the corner of circus Maximus. I loved it and wish it was an everyday thing.

The Testaccio Farmers' Market (the one featured in the photos) moved to Via Francesco Passino in the Garbatella neighborhood TWO years ago and is nothing like what Troy described. What junk are you referring to? They only sold food and produce, there were and are no "dollar-store" items for sale. You must be confusing it with something else. In any case, it's by far one of the best produce-food markets around featuring local producers only.

This can be very difficult to do when traveling in any touristy city, and especially in Rome. I passed this restaurant/farmers market earlier in the day and noticed there were no signs/menus in English. There was nobody hustling me to come in and sit down. There was only one woman, who I believe is the owner, that speaks limited English but was very kind. I thought eureka, this is the place! Finally, after having tried dozens of restaurants throughout Italy, I found my favorite and most authentic Italian food (my limited knowledge leads me to believe it is native to this region). I came in for €10 Aperitivo around 17:30. The owner gave me a delectable plate of eggplant lasagna, sautéed greens and grilled vegetables, with a bread puff filled with vegetable pieces similar to the consistency of a hush puppy. I was floored. If you're looking to get a taste of local Italian cuisine while in Rome, this is the place. Could not have been more satisfied after trying Carbonara, Gnocchi, and pizza dishes cooked by foreigners and being subsequently begged to leave a tip which is not customary in Italian culture cuisine.
