I visited the Mercado with one goal in mind--putting my negotiation skills to the test! Who doesn't love a good haggle? As soon as you arrive, you're greeted by rows of stalls packed with everything from hats and clothing to jewelry and unique oddities. It's a treasure box of souvenirs, but the real fun is in the bargaining. One vendor cleverly lured us into his air-conditioned stall (smart move on a hot day), and I was almost sold on a beautiful Mayan stone that changed colors in different lighting. It started at $160, but after some back-and-forth negotiations, I worked it down to $40--still walked away, though! I wasn't looking for anything specific, just the thrill of the deal, and this was definitely the place to do it. If you're visiting, remember: never settle for the first price. I ate in one of the seafood restaurants in the center of the Mercado 28. Got a few simple items, seviche, tacos, coke. When I asked for the check the waiter instead brought his calculator to the table with my total. It seemed high $650 pesos, about $45 USD. I asked him to give me a paper bill with the prices itemized, his response was 'porque' (why?). Because it's the international standard that I should receive a bill. USE THE RESTROOM BEFORE!!! They are scarce and far walk away from the market. You will pay for restroom and for toilet paper. Take some wipes in your bag. Especially if you're a foodie. Arrive early because even though it says they're open until 6pm, half the shops will be closed by 5pm. Negotiate to your hearts content! Don't accept the price from the first stall, and check out all the stalls until you find a plausible or cheaper price. Every shop has similar items, and once you find the best price, go for it. They KNOW you're a tourist if you're here, so they will hike prices up so don't let your guard down. It's an honestly fun experience, but if you're not fluent in Spanish, and speak English, prices might go higher. Nothing to be scared of, because there are people trying to make a living too. Remember they are people, and they're trying their best~ don't take one bad encounter and judge everyone else. There are less aggressive sellers. You can find all kinds of gifts and foods! Beware the jewelry shops. Unless you want to roam around the nice air conditioned room, because I asked questions in front of the air conditioner myself to cool down. Came as a tourist with my girlfriend. I knew we'd be hassled to buy stuff from the vendors but honestly no one was overly pushy. A simple " we're just looking" and you keep it moving and they leave you alone. We searched around until we felt we got a good deal, so I'd say don't buy on your first store but look at all of them until you find the best price. They don't have prices on a lot of the items so I felt like we got higher prices cuz we're Americans. Still good price for what we left with ( a little mezcal souvenir, a rosary, some cricket snacks) for 33USD$. Compared to what I saw in other places this was way better ( other places being outside of market 28). We found the bracelets we paid 15 dollars in Playa del Carmen, here for 5 dollars . So mad. We were able to get 2 bracelets and 1 necklace for 12$. We found a nice little taco stall. 2 tacos for 60 pesos (a little over 3USD). We came here via uber from our hotel and left in uber too. First, I'm happy I went because I am one of those people who feel the need to make my own opinion on my experience. Beyond that it was not worth the time nor the effort to visit. 99% of the items are garbage, not even handmade wares. The vendors, who are doing this for a living are going and do attempt to represent a value that is ficticious and when we tried to barter many stood firm on their ridiculous price. Every vendor carried the same thing. We bought a county-fair quality stuffed character, a pair of dollar store sunglasses that broke in the first 5 minutes and a bottle of vanilla I get to carry home that Amazon could have delivered. Such an intriguing experience going into Mercado 28 as an American tourist. Immediately, you will be approached and targeted by every vendor. If you feel bad about ignoring someone, don't come here or you'll end up wasting your whole day. You're meant to negotiate the prices for everything. What they have listed is NOT the set price. If they're not going to go lower, say you're going to a different vendor. There's 10 of every store here. The alcohol vendors will give you as much free alcohol as you want, hoping to entice you to buy their products. There are some really neat stores that will burn your name into little purses and bags. There are a lot of food and alcohol shops. Try out some of the candy and street corn. Definitely get your souvenirs here but be careful because some of the stuff they up charge you compared to the same product for a lower price at Walmart (sugar skulls). My favorite line they used was "special price, just for you!" You have to come here to get the full experience of Mexico. read more

We bought all gift and souvenir in this place, great prices compare to the fancy stores and same quality is most products. Safe to get around, parking lot available, and this place has restroom (you have to pay 5 Mexican pesos to use it). You will find everything in this place. People are determinate to sell you everything and you will feel it. There are restaurants in the center of this market. This is a colorful place and beautiful local artisans products. My recommendation is to make you first stop here if you plan to buy souvenirs. We bought the majority of our items in one store (do not remember the name but I know how to get there) we parked on the left side of the parking lot# 3 then we walked straight to the alley on the left size to the other end you will see a T intersection at the last store they have dresses, masks, silver, Talavera, and more. read more

I was almost a little skeptical about going to Mercado 28 after reading a lot of the reviews. However once we got there we were greeted with very warm pillows. Granted they do ask to come to their shops but no you're not required to go but if you desire I'm used to shopping at local marts and other countries and it is very high paced and crowded but this was not that type of experience. Everyone that worked there was respectful when we stated we were not interested or we had enough items. During our visit we even ate some of the most delicious and fresh seafood. We went to the shops and parking lot one and we also ate and the area entitled parking lot 1 more of the better shops people were friendly and we had a good time they even had my son dancing. read more

Even when I told her to her face that she lied and scammed me she denied it and refused everything. I thought I was paying 50$ which I was ok with. What I as NOT ok with was paying 250$. I'm still trying to settle this. I don't want this ring. I will never wear it. If they don't take it back and charge back my card I will prob give it to goodwill. It's just covered with bad juju. We came here for food not shopping so that is the reason for 3 stars. The shopping is for tourists the food seems to be for locals as it looked like most of the shop owners were eating here. The shops are all blah. As other reviewers mentioned nothing locally made, all the same stuff in every stall and all being claimed to be "handmade". As other reviewers mentioned there are about 100 or so shops in here and you will get harassed BY EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. There is no peace of leisurely browsing here, so be prepared for that. Just wandering through trying to find food was exhausting. The food was good, we picked a stall and ordered Cocinita which is what a member of the hotel staff recommended. It is like a stewed pork and it was really tasty! The fried plantains are not like Tostones which was a bit surprising to me. If that's what you are looking for don't order them. This place is off the main city, and it takes about 20 minutes from the "Zona Hotelera" on bus ruta 2. The cost is $12 pesos per person to ride the bus. Here you will find souvenirs for a reasonable price. Paying in pesos always gets you better deals. The restaurant in the middle of the plaza is said to be decent unless you want to venture out further. There are plenty of taco stands around also. It closes at 7 so ID advise to start heading towards the center of town to catch the Rta. 2 back to the "Zona Hotelera". On your way there will be several stands and restaurants. read more

This is a market with a 100 plus stalls/booths that look all the same selling the same old boring crap. There are no handmade items, they are all mass produced crap from China. Everyone tries to scam you and haggle with you starting with very expensive pricing. Sellers lied to us about where things came from (we like handmade items and were looking for woodcrafters, weavers,etc). One guy told us these mayan masks were made by "a guy who died but we found a new maker", well guess what, we saw the same exact masks 100 more times...that dead guy must have been REALLY busy before he kicked the bucket. smh. Sellers were aggressive and would follow you or stand in your way so you had to move around them. In addition, we were told by an employee of the hotel we were staying at that the bus and other transportation companies get paid 300 pesos to drop people off before Mercado 28 at the other stands on the road leading to Mercado, so that you think that is the market and buy from them. Either way, it doesn't matter, they all sell the same crap. No food stands other than a few full service food court restaurants...which was a bummer. I was looking to enjoy some mango, corn on the cob, or churros but none were to be found. Skip this place. If you do decide to go from the hotel zone, you take route 2 on the public bus system. read more

Market 28 has become one giant scam. What used to be a fun place to barter with the locals and get inexpensive souvenirs has become an absolute nightmare of a scam. Everything sold here is sold at the airport, but the airport prices are labeled, and CHEAPER! Literally everything we bought here was at the airport but less expensive. Even after the haggling. Vendors are all aggressive and offer you free shots of tequila or mescal to loosen you up. Then try and charge you sooooo much. We even had one vendor tell is one price in USD and then later we noticed our credit card was charged much more in pesos.. so we didn't notice at the time. Especially be careful of the jewelry shops, they are selling $40 rings from Amazon peddling them as authentic Special stones of the Mayan.. its all a bunch of scammers read more

The R2 bus will drop you off at Plaza 28 and the vendors there will tell you that you are at Mercado 28. Google maps directed us to the route for a 7 minute walk to Mercado 28. The Mercado was not too crowded during our visit on a Wednesday morning. The vendors were not too aggressive, except for a couple of little girls trying to sell purses. One vendor showed us a staircase to a second level for good views down to the shops. The second level appears to be for professional services, such as dentists. Make sure to have at least 10 pesos if you need to use a bathroom. I was in dire need and luckily had the 11 pesos given to me by a friend, so 10 went towards using a tiny hole in the wall toilet and six sheets of toilet paper. At least there was a sink to wash my hands afterwards. Our visit to Mercado 28 made for an entertaining couple of hours. We were not looking to purchase anything as we traveled with carry-on luggage only and had no room for souvenirs. read more

They will ring you up for items and wrap them up quickly so you can't see the bottom of the prices. My friend bought Zultamite- BUT FAKE !!!!! There is no AC and the smell of BADUSSY is on another level! This place is a giant swap meet. It's essentially the same stuff at every other store in here. The workers latch on and are pretty pushy. Now when you do find something you want you gotta haggle with them. We were just told our grand total was $167 with a discount because we spoke Spanish. This $167 was for 3 small items I could buy for about $12. Needless to say we only got one item and it was still $50! My son likes The Simpsons and found a "one of a kind Homer" dressed like the green lantern. My daughter wanted alebrijes so we walked a block over to the Fiesta Outlet and got them for $1.60 each. The outlet has all the crap you can think of and super cheap. Nothing beats downtown but if you don't wanna ride the bus to the locals swap meet then just go to the outlet. read more

Most important thing: if you ride the bus here (R-2 from hotel zone and back) the bus will drop you off at "the market" and it is NOT Mercado 28. You have to walk about .5 mile down the street and you'll see the sign for the real place. We already knew that but a local man told us right away when we got off the bus and actually walked us all the way there. He was really nice, but had a hidden agenda because he immediately asked to take us to his favorite two vendors, his nieces and the silver jewelry store he worked at. The haggling started as soon as we went to the first store. It took being "showed" three stores before we were finally politely able to get away and start on our own. Either way, always negotiate the prices and NEVER take the first offer. Have a currency converter on your phone and be able to make it known that you understand the peso conversion, otherwise they will certainly take advantage whether you pay in pesos or your own currency. Either way, it's definitely cheaper than shopping in the heart of Cancun, there's around 280 vendors, and there's a handful of (overpriced) food places. The cheapest "souvenirs" we found was actually the vendors of Chichen Itza which we passed up knowing we'd be coming to Mercado 28.
