Is it weird that one of my favorite parts of going on vacation in foreign countries is exploring their grocery stores? Chedraui was definitely the best grocery store on the island as far as selection. Eggs are cheaper than in USA and so delicious. My kids loved the pastry section-- so fresh each morning. Tip: you pick up a large metal platter, use the tongs to select your pastries, and take them to the register at the back to be packaged and priced. Note that you need to bring your own grocery bags and cannot carry in a backpack. If you do you have to leave it at the customer service counter. Chedraui also has anything you may have forgotten for the beach -- hats, sunglasses, sunscreen. Centrally located on the island. This is the primary grocery store on Isla Mujeres. This is the largest store as well. It has everything you need plus more to stock your pantry and fridge for your vacation on Isla Mujeres. If you are from the US or Canada, there will definitely be some comforts of home that you will need to substitute or do without. Also, there are other things that you may be used to buying that they simply do not have. For example, milk is not available in 1 gallon containers. Coffee creamer is hit or miss. We used cooking cream that was vanilla flavored. They do seem to always have hazelnut creamer if you can live with that instead. Grocery stores in Mexico also have a full selection of liquor. The tequila selection here is greater than what I have seen in a liquor store in the US. This grocery store is also the local appliance center, home goods, and moped dealer but I doubt if you are buying any of that stuff while you are here for your extended stay. They do take credit cards and do not charge you a conversion fee upfront. If you have an elderly person bagging groceries with the checkout person, please tip them. They are not employed and your tip is their wage. Bottom line - This is the largest and best grocery store on Isla Mujeres. It is our go-to location for almost anything we need for our extended stays. read more

This was definitely a lovely alternative to thr extremely high priced restaurants in the hotel zone. The grocery store has 3 levels. The 2nd and 3rd level is where more food is. We were able to find a meal (lunch) for my family of 4 for $20. It was nice to not spend a gazillion dollars on food. This was just a short walk from our hotel. Service was okay. Some were friendly but they were kind of slow in checking people out. read more

This grocery store has just about all you need if you at staying on the island. We bought 5 nights worth of groceries at great prices. When we come back for another stay, this will for sure be our go to. They have English interpretations for the aisles, but not on the products, however they have enough name brands that you can figure it out. read more

The biggest supermarket on the island, Chedraui has everything you need to get ready for your island vacation: --cheaper namebrand sunscreen than in the pharmacies or expensive tourist stores --great alcohol & beer selection, including SOME craft beer from other countries and around Mexico. A six pack of XX was $55 pesos or $3. A bottle of Bacardi Rum was $180 pesos or less than $10. --plenty of beach toys, towels, floaties at reasonable prices --good selection of snack foods to bring with you to the beach Highly recommend making a stop here when you get to the island to stock up for your stay! It is a little out of the way, but nearby to Mango Cafe and the Isla Brewing Company. Stop by after brunch or visiting the local brewery! Getting there/back to playa norte: --Walk is about ~50 minutes from playa norte and pretty hot! It gives you a nice taste of the whole island outside the tourist areas, but recommend going early to avoid the heat and lack of shade along the route. --Cab charged us 60 pesos to get back from the grocery store. A local woman told us that it should be ~40 pesos to get back to the beach. We tried to haggle the price down, but he refused. It was a hot day, so we hopped in because we were anxious to get to the beach. Highly recommend taking your own golf cart or a bike if you don't want to rely on cab drivers! There were a lot of cabs passing by here, but not stopping at the super market to pick up passengers.
