My friend and I were harassed at every booth. We were so annoyed by it. All the vendors pretty much sell or have the same exact things. I was interested in a pair of flower earrings, not real, & the man had the audacity to try and start the price at $2000 pesos, then went down to $1500 pesos, then $10 USD. He got upset and said "show me the money" and when I refused to entertain him for trying to rip me off in the first place, he called us "cheap". We left empty handed. Nothing stood out. Great shop to buy all the little trinkets and souvenirs you need for family and friends back home. The prices are a little steep but they always start like that and then you haggle them down! They have a restaurant and little snacks inside to try if you get hungry. We saw a man pushing a wheelbarrow? Of fruit and he let us try it. It was so juicy and refreshing we bought 3 bags! It's a fun place to go if you're just shopping for souvenirs! It's a little confusing on how to get there, so make sure you have good directions before heading out! read more

If you love super aggressive vendors nearly accosting you as you walk by, being offered drugs immediately upon setting foot in the market, and seeing the exact same thing in nearly every booth, then you'll love it here. I also did not plan on seeing the inside of a Mexican jail, so I made my way away from the drug dealer quickly. You can get VERY cheap (and cheaply) made souvenirs for your not so close friends and family, such as $1 shot glasses, keychains, etc, and we did buy some beautiful jewelry (bargained down a LOT) and pottery. Even on the cheap items, BARGAIN. $1/each? Or $10/10 items? 15 items/$10. We bought two things that started out as $59 total; we paid $25. Just be prepared to walk away. Trust me, the next booth will have the same things. IF, by chance, you find a booth where you like the vendor, and purchase some items from him, and he doesn't have what else you want, tell him. He will find the right booth for you himself. We did like relaxing in the large dining area for some ice cream and Coca-Cola. Note: try not to wear anything that makes you 'stand out'; that includes a hat or shirt from home or the resort, or even a bottle of water from your hotel. And yes, they translate 'LADY' as a nice term to get your attention. I wish we had NOT listened to the concierge at our hotel; she lied to us about what was available at Mercado 23, which is where we wanted to go. The R2 was $1 each/person (or 21 pesos for 2 people, which is cheaper). If you are not used to being packed into a bus like sardines, and people not moving to let you out, this is your warning. Avoid this place unless you like repetitive flea market items, pushy sales people, catcalling, racist remarks, bait and switches, and walking away feeling like you've been mocked and taken advantage of. After a great time at Mercado 23, we thought we'd check out this place 10 minutes away. What a complete opposite of what we had just pleasantly experienced. Yes, it is super touristy and you may be able to save a couple bucks, but being constantly and aggressively haggled, spoken at rudely, etc. is not what I'd call the "true Mexican experience" - I know this happens in many cities - and I've experienced this to varying degrees in Mexico since the 1990s and throughout 7 Mexican cities, but this was a whole nother level. There was one booth in particular (Kiosko that served Tapioca 5c) that a man ushered me to - maybe because I am Asian - and said they served boba. All the drinks on the presented menu were like 25-30 peso, so I was like, sure I'll give Mexican boba a try and ordered a pineapple one. The gal made it and said it cost 90 pesos. o_O. That is nearly double what you'd pay in the states and not what I had understood the menu to say. And to make it worse, it was pretty gross and definitely NOT pina. I brought it back after one sip saying that I did not like it and that it was not what I had ordered. She repeatedy insisted it was pina and would not listen, so I had that guy come back over to explain it to her in english, but she refused to remake it, take it back, or give me my money back. This same man did this to my friend also - presenting a menu or item from what we thought was from one place, when it was really from another place and the product was equally crappy. Seriously. Ugh. Tourist Trap If you are after a true experience of being hassled, want to put up a good fight bargaining then Mercado 28 is perfect. If you are after local food, do not want to be hassled by sales staff and surrounded by souvenirs than do not venture near. This market is like a flea market where you can haggle however be aware the vendors can be quite pushy. We did a brisk walk through and did not get any souvenirs however we stopped in the middle for some food at a restaurant that has rainbow flags hanging on the ceiling. The food was actually really good and price was reasonable with an evilly spicy ceviche! If you do visit, bring some cash, enjoy the craziness and keep an eye out for the mariachi band that busks around. read more

Probably not worth the visit. A tourist nightmare ! Don't get roped into the jewelry or the tequila at the front of the market. There are many more authentic versions of the same deeper in the stalls. We didn't spend too much time there because we felt majorly accosted by the locals. The place to go is Mercado 23. Here you can find shirts, handcrafts, jewelry, bags, typical mexican clothes, toys, tequila, everything you can imagine... This market is located downtown and you may spend some time because there are so many things that your lugage may increase the double or more. If you get hungry, don't worry cuz there are mexican and sea food, for example "El cejas" is a very famous restaurant with fair prices, delicious food and live marimba music. read more

BE CAREFUL!!!! We were brought to this market by a man that said "this isn't the real Market, I'll take you to the real market" so we went ... cuz we knew the market we were at was overpriced ... I fell in love with these huuuuge Mexican designed blankets and asked someone how much they were, 85 US he says .... uhm, no. I'm Canadian - that's like over a hundred - I talked him down to 40 US and felt good about that - yay me. My son had his eye on a Corona shirt and talked them down to 150 pesos - he was proud of himself and we walked away thinking we got a great deal, the same thing happened with a cool looking skull ..... well, be careful!!!!!!!! When they bagged out stuff they swapped what we saw :( they gave me a mangled up skull, my son a tank top instead of a muscle top that wasn't authentic corona and I found the blanket in the hotel gift shop for 45$ US. And Apparently if it doesn't have tags, it's from China :( I haven't had the balls to look to see if there's a tag or not on mine .... Just be careful..... watch then like a hawk, oh, the same with vanilla - got a better deal at Pier 27 in the hotel - grrrrrrrrr. I'm so bitter read more

Came to look around the shops today but all of the shop owners harass you as you walk by. It's really annoying. All of the shops carry pretty much the same things too. They probably would each do better if they offered different items. Shop 85 is a must visit. Has better and reasonable pricing than others and the chap is very friendly and funny!

If you go here, double check your prices and only pay cash. They will try to convince you the exchange rate is better with card. It isn't worth it. We were charged over 3× as much by paying with a card. They will also try to give you countless samples of tequilla before you pay for your items. Don't fall for that. read more

If you have time to waste, maybe this would be something you can do. Lots of little shops where you can buy knick knacks to take back home, or maybe you want some tequila or clothing. But, there's nothing original about this place or any of the individual shops. Everyone had the same things and 95% (if not more) of it was junk. If you're interested in little trinkets like these, I would recommend going to the Forum By the Sea. There are many shops here that have the same items, you can get some food & have a drink at Señor Frog or Fat Tuesday. There just wasn't anything special about this place. Our hotel even had the same items and had vendors come in on Saturday afternoon to sell their goods, it may be worth asking your hotel if they do the same. Also, be warned: the vendors are very aggressive and they will swarm you. If you're not into that, this definitely isn't the place for you. read more

I was worried about coming here because of the overall rating (three stars) and commentary (that the vendors are aggressive). I am glad I went because I was able to see a bit of the "real Cancun" and also get some really awesome food and souvenirs. The place is a little sketchy looking and you have to walk quite a ways from the bus drop but go during the day and be alert and there should be no problems (I went alone during the day and was fine). The vendors can be aggressive but remember they are trying to make a living and are just being "salesmen": - be firm if you don't want something or want to pay a certain price -if you don't want to engage w someone, just smile and add a "no gracias" - I think it's often our guilt that gets us into situations (i.e. Looking at goods we don't want, talking with vendors for a long time when we aren't interested). If you give them an opening, they will try to show you everything in their shop -do not buy anything at the face value price - I honestly think starting really low is the way to go and if you are willing to walk away, the price will get lower (def shop around at first so you can see what their is and what the prices are) -restaurants are in the middle - go to the one in the center that isn't connected to others - it was filled w locals when I went which is a good sign! read more

One of my favorite stops in Cancun. This place has a little bit of everything. Jewelry, clothes, accessories, trinkets, toys and friendly faces. If you're a true flea market fan like myself, be sure you have a lot of extra time - I have spent hours in this maze of treasures and flea market finds. The middle of the market also offers a tasty variety of authentic Mexican cuisine. Ask for Hugo. I highly recommend this place to everyone who makes it out of the hotel zone (which you should if you want to actually experience Cancun). Bus #2 should take you within blocks of Market 28. Some, now, even take you right by it. read more

This place sells complete junk. You may be able to get a good deal on shirts, costume jewelry, and cheap souvenirs. Despite literally hundreds of small individual stores, I am guessing that they are all owned by the same person/people. They all pretty much sell the same things and use all of the same lines. "Best deal", "Liquidation", "authentico", etc. Not only that, my experience involved an overly aggressive salesman who I made the mistake of showing too much interest towards. Seeking a "Cheap" Lionel Messi jersey, the salesman would not take no for an answer. Obvious flaws, poor stitching, poor quality, etc were not worth a mere $10. Disappointed by the inability to close the deal, the salesman started calling me cheap and walked toward my family aggressively. Really? When I realized what he was doing, I snapped back in an equally aggressive manner as he retreated. Really nothing here worth this incident. JUNK...JUNK....JUNK... Don't go here. read more

You can probably find everything that you would ever want to buy here. General merchandise is a little cheaper if you haggle correctly and the food at the restaurants is cheap. Tourists often confuse this place with plaza 28, which is where the bus lets you off. And they're put off by the hard-core selling and over priced merchandise. But the market itself is about five blocks away and is it in the shape of the circle. A Street runs all the way around it. Shops are in the exterior and restaurants are in the interior. You are still going to have to endure some addresses selling tactics as you go by some of the vendors. Just ignore it and do what you got to do! read more

I went with my family to buy some souvenirs and got there by bus route R2. The bus left us in this "Plaza 28" which is not "Mercado 28", It's a store with "everything in one place". There are many handcrafted pieces and typical Mexican objects, food, spirits and jewellery. Unfortunately, we found out that all the items we bought were extremely overpriced, like five times its current value!!!. Although we bargain a lot, it wasn't enough to avoid to get us ripped off. Please buy your souvenirs at hotel shops, its safer and for sure with more realistic prices. It was a very bad experience for us. It is also gives a very bad reputation of Mexican shopping and f markets for tourists. A total scam!!. It would be good for tourists to have advise from travel agents to avoid visiting these places. First impression: this is place where buses full of tourist would stop off on the way to some major site. Its full of hawkers trying aggressively to sell you cheap products at extremely marked up prices. Attempting to haggle is fun, for me at least, but its obvious you'll never get a real good deal because there is always another gringo sucker just steps behind you. I saw a lot of really good skeleton Mexican character statues, painted skeleton heads of all sizes, crosses, rugs, etc. etc. We didn't buy anything because we knew we could get it all cheaper else where.... and we did. Towards the center open court yard there are many food vendors. We enjoyed some delicious tacos while some nearby men played on the xylophone at Restaurant Atotonilco. We had a great time despite the annoyances of aggressive vendors, but then again, we completely expected this experience. One aspect that may bother some visitors: we were offered drugs on more than one occasion, slightly shady when there are families and kids wondering about. read more

The things for sale are absolute crap. I looked and inevitably there was damage on everything I looked at, even in the brick and mortar establishments nearby had only damaged low quality goods. The worst part of this experience was the hawkers of goods. We pursued purchasing a coconut, and when the person saw us taking pictures of the coconut brought over someone dressed up as a mayan in fabulous gear and asked if we wanted to take a picture with them. I said no. He said "puta". I know what puta means and I imagine that trying to sell pictures of yourself is a little more along the definition of the word. They do not see tourists as people, simply as dollar signs. I would not spend a minute in this dump if ever I go to Cancun again. read more

So we asked where we can find cheap stuff at decent prices for souvenirs, hats, etc everyone we asked in Cancun where we stayed at in our hotel was saying Mercado 28. To take the bus R-2, so let me tell you, if you take this bus it will drop you off at Plaza 28 a tourist trap. If you live in US the shit sell here you can find at the swap meet for less than 10 bucks. Everything is 4 Times the price that is in the US and they all want peSos. And if you want to pay in US dollars they will be upset and charge you at the lowest rate they can. You have to haggle with these people. We walked a couple blocks down to Mercado 28, dirty, sketchy people selling you crap at ridiculous prices. Don't go save your money and buy something at the theme parks you go or a nice restaurant. read more

The best place to shop in Cancun. The prices are about 50 to 70 percent less than shopping in the downtown part of Cancun. My wife bought a Cancun beach bag for about 25 pesos and the other places she checked the same bag was about 150 pesos. The food there is great and cheap, we had lunch there twice and loved the food. I will defiantly go back to this mercado next time we visit Cancun. read more

Everyone BEWARE! The bus will drop you of at PLAZA 28 not El Mercado 28! In that area taxis should charge only 30 pesos to take you to the mercado 28, it's only 5 blocks away. Like many of us have experienced, men from the PLAZA 28 will corral you into the shop and the colors will attract you into the store. DON'T BE LURED IN!!!!! I beg you! You will find the exact same souvenirs for atleast half to triple the price off. For your way back you can ask around for a bus stop or you can take a taxi, but don't forget to negotiate your price back because obviously they will try to scam you. Don't listen to what the bus drivers have to say, they get commission off of how many tourist get off the bus, that's why it seems so glorious when they pay for your bus ticket back. El Mercado 28 is a beautiful, traditional market where you can find artisanal goods, shirts, keychains, shot glasses, and many many souvenirs. My favorite place was a stand that was selling personalized mugs, shot glasses, and beer glasses. They had different designs and they engrave whatever you want on them. 2 mugs for 100 pesos! That's about 6$. Now you can't beat that. read more
