The building isn't the prettiest. I think it is situated in the first strip mall in Bandera. The interior isn't screaming "look at me!". The people here are nice, and the place is one of those somtimes busy - sometimes not places. The folks that I see in the restaurant are usually local folks. If you can keep your neighbors coming to eat your food, you're doing something right. I've never eaten here. Three days a week I take my sweetheart to Boerne for four hours of dialysis. On Monday I take her and pick her back up when she is done. On the way back home she calls Mendoza's to order tacos to take home. Without fail. One of the hardest things for me to order is carne guisada tacos. If it is not right, it is not worth a second bite,and honestly - I'm not that daring on the average day. This place puts out a great carne guisada taco. Try it out. The food is good and visiting this restaurant won't suck all of the money out of your pocket. read more

Just Meh. Nothing special about this place. It looks a little run down on the outside and a lot run-down on the inside. Tired decor, chipping paint and an over all dingy look and feel. Maybe this place was a chic place at one time- but that time was in the last century. Nothing special about the menu- it is typical Mexican fare. My wife called out the tortilla chips and salsa as "thumbs down". She's on the money on this one. Salsa was tasty (spicy) but the chips bordered on stale. We were there in the late afternoon (about 4-5) and when we walked in the place was nearly empty. The one server on duty was being constantly harassed by a table full of Hispanic dudes that seemed to thing she was their own private server. Usually it doesn't bother me, in fact I really don't like a server hovering over us. But we and the other customers who came in were treated like second class customers. We saw her once when we came in, once when we ordered, once when she dropped off the drinks and once when we got our food. The rest of the time she was occupied with the seven hombres drinking beer. The dudes kept calling out for her and we had to pry her away from them to get the check and pay. No- we didn't get any refills! The food was warm and pleasantly arranged on the plate but not anything I would write about and say.. .wow... that's great. It was average to below average in taste and portion size. The beans and rice were cold. I hate to judge a place on one experience- but it was a not a place I'll go back to. I kept thinking one of those loud dudes was going to stand up and come over to our table to challenge me, "Okay Gringo, I don't like you, get the f*** out of my restaurant..." Click. My first dining experience at Mendoza's Mexican Restaurant fell short of expectations, I ordered one of the lunch specials, Pollo Poblano. Chicken breast smothered with cheese & topped with Poblano peppers, served with rice & beans. The chicken breast was thin sliced, pan seared , dry & greasy. The recipe would have been much better if the chicken breast was thicker & flamed grilled. Or, if the pan seared method could have been improved with much less grease. The rice was mushy & the charro beans had a sour aftertaste. I did express my concern with my server, but she didn't react with much concern. I am not sure if I'll be revisiting this restaurant again in the near future?! Hopefully restaurant management will react to customer feedback & focus on customer retention?! read more

Went in a few days ago... Food is not great but is fine when your starving. service is 8/10 bad. To go orders are "15-20min" yet you'll wait 35-45. We stopped by on our way to New Mexico and I have never said this, but this was the worst Mexican food I have ever had. We walked into the establishment and it was dead. Yet we still got the slowest and worst service. Our server didn't even bother to check on us. I ordered a medium rare steak with ranchero sauce on top and toast, and what I received was the most rubbery well done steak I have ever had with no toast. Go google "Lisa from Temecula". It's an SNL skit about a super rubbery steak. That was my experience. My significant other had to hold a table while I tried to cut through the steak. I would like to say I'm taking dramatic licensing but this literally happened. I tried my best to enjoy my food, even though it wasn't what I ordered, but it was disgusting. When I pointed it out to the server that she got my order wrong, she just went "Oh,yeah..." then walked off. No apologies and didn't try to rectify the situation. Me and my significant other paid for our meal and tipped 20%. I spent $50 on food I had to throw away because it was inedible. The service was so bad, we had 3 different waiters yet were hardly checked on. My fiancé waited ten minutes for his coke after they brought him the wrong drink and his brothers "steak and shrimp" had a steak that was literally a centimeter thick. ??? My torta barely had any pastor meat inside and the meat that it did have were like charred fragments of leftover looking shit lol It was almost laughable with how bad everything was, the only meal that turned out okay was the enchiladas because THEY'RE ENCHILADAS. The line to pay was 7 people long and took forever for how *not busy* the place was. Basically- don't go here? Find another place? First time to eat here, was a mixed bag. My suggestion is skip the Tex-Mex and order more towards authentic Mexican. Chips - 1 star. Not homemade, obviously store bought and kind of tough Salsa - 4 stars. Good taste, slight burn. Really good. Crispy beef taco meal - 2 stars. My sister ordered this and said the taco meat was bland with no flavor. Rice was so-so Nachos- 2.5 stars. Huge helping but like the tacos, the ground meat was bland. Enchiladas plate - 2.5 stars. Was told it was "OK" Carnitas tacos- 5 stars. I ordered this and they were delicious! By far our favorite thing. Came on homemade tortillas and were stuffed full of pork. Yummy! This may Bandera's best kept secret! The Crispy tacos are probably the best we have ever had, served with rice and beans. Hubby had the Shrimp Parrilla, (basically shrimp fajitas.). At least 20 shrimp with onions and bell peppers and the side platter with rice and beans, guacamole sour cream, pico and salad. They make their own tortillas and give you a choice of flour or corn. They serve beer, Margaritas and make an AWESOME Michelada with your choice of beer. (Try the Dark Modelo). It's off the beaten path but well worth the short drive from Main Street. It's our go to Mexican Restaurant when in Bandera. read more

I live in Bandera and I own a small business, and as a small business owner, I support small businesses. But this place... horrific service. I don't eat out much, but tonight I decided I didn't want to cook so I ordered what I thought was a burrito plate. I had to pay extra for chips, so I did. After paying and tipping ($14 total), I waited for 20 minutes and the hostess brought out one of those tiny bags that you get like when you buy something small at a store... earrings or whatever. Tiny bag. I asked, is this my burrito plate and chips and she said with a smirk, "Oh no, it's a burrito ala carte and chips. When you said you wanted a beef burrito, I asked you if that was all and you said, 'Yes, ma'am.'" So for $14 I got this weak burrito the size of a breakfast taco and a handful of chips. Arrived at lunch on a Monday....did not seem too busy or crowded. I ordered the carnitas lunch special and my friend got chicken flautas and a margarita. Her marg tasted like tang powder drink mix and about 35 minutes later our food arrived, mine was room temp and hers was blazing hot from the fryer. The carnitas, being cool were tough and dry. For Mexican food in Bandera this is as good as it gets. The restaurant is clean, up to date and smells good. The service is good and friendly. The prices are average. Without going into bite by bite descriptions let me just say that I have always been pleased with the quality of the food. Plus their is a big parking lot. read more

I've been here twice. Both times I ordered the steak mini tacos which came with charro beans. Delicious. My companions ordered full dinners which they stated were just ok. I did notice the puffy tacos were a greasy wet mess and overall not very flavorful. So it's a toss up and I guess depends on what you order. If you like your salsa more on the spicy side then ask for it. They will bring you a green and red version that are just right. read more
