We frequent Chaparral because we like the drive up IH10 to Boerne and the restaurant is not usually overly crowded, which makes for a more relaxed dining experience. On Fridays and Saturdays there can be a wait, but they often offer a waitlist option, and you can also make a reservation the day before which I highly recommend. For a long time, I struggled with what to order because some of the dishes felt a bit heavy for my taste. They were good but too greasy. And for years I have typically stuck with the chicken quesadilla or a bowl of bean soup. However, I recently tried the mini tacos and that completely changed my experience! The mini tacos come six to an order, and the meat was cooked perfectly: tender, juicy, and full of flavor. They're served on a single corn tortilla (many places use two), so they did fall apart a bit and I had to eat with a fork but honestly, with added lime, onion and cilantro, they were so delicious that I didn't mind. The charro beans are a great accompaniment with really nice flavor and this plate DOES NOT come with rice. I do however like the white style rice that comes with the quesadilla. I know many people rave about the refried beans. While they are tasty, they're a bit too greasy for my personal preference. Service is decent overall. The waitstaff often seems very busy and possibly understaffed, but they are still pleasant and kind. If you're not sure what to order, I definitely recommend giving the mini tacos a try. read more

We've been to the location in Helotes many times over the years...have been to the Boerne location a few times. They are both great for larger parties and both have nice outside seating...very spacious dining inside and out. Both locations have a nice bar area, as well. Today I had what I most often have...chicken enchiladas with cilantro cream sauce. The plate also comes with beans and rice, but I'm allergic to beans so leave them off. Frozen margaritas are so yummy! And their salsa is really delicious. I pour it all over my rice and enchiladas! Service was a little slow...and we were there in the middle of the afternoon, so it wasn't busy. Had to ask several times for water and a couple other things. My first and last time trying this place. I ordered chimachangas with fajita steak and their steak was extremely lackluster. No spices added to the little bit of meat I got and I received mostly lettuce. I ordered two pineapple margaritas and they had no flavor whatsoever. I had to ask for Tajin to add to them to make them drinkable. I had to use Tajin on the chimichangas, as well. This was a very disappointing dining experience that won't be repeated. Always a good meal and drinks at El Chaparral. We were there again today. My father-in-law is picky about his enchiladas & El Chaparral is his "to go place". GF and I don't visit Boerne too often. Not exactly sure why but we just go elsewhere. Charming downtown with fun (also expensive) shopping and people watching. While the available restaurants are good it's lacking a good Tex-Mex option. I also do have to point out that too many restaurants are closing in Boerne. I follow My San Antonio and local closings are staggering. Now, some good news on a recent trip. We were looking at trucks at the local "motor mile" and stumbled onto El Chaparral. Restaurants aren't always on Main Street folks. We found El Chaparral by taking backroads to visit car dealerships. Praise for their tenure in the town we sat down for lunch on the first visit. Chips and salsa starts your experience. Then, bean soup! The most flavorful borracho/charro beans in all of Texas. Did Lupe Tortilla steal this? The server explained we had the option to sub them on an entree instead of refried or similar less seasoned "charro beans". WHY???? Those beans are perfect! As I said two visits. First entree was my requisite shrimp enchiladas. Can't remember when I've had the dish paired with a sour cream sauce. Shrimp were well seasoned with grilled onion. Sauce was too heavy on the sour cream and zero seasoning. Next visit I went with a taco salad. This is my second go to and again found issues with the dish. Shredded chicken was tasty; artful presentation with the toppings. But, tortilla bowl is not hot. Cold in fact. No crispy love there which makes the dish an indulgence for me. Finally had time to stop by the new location in Boerne. The restaurant is very spacious with traditional Mexican decor and plenty of parking. Was greeted immediately with no wait time. The complimentary chips and salsa was flavorful and spicy. The shrimp poblano was absolutely wonderful hitting savory, spicy, and fresh flavors. Paired with charro beans, avacado, lettuce, tomato, and the coastal rice was interesting yet tasty. The shoestring fries with the steak was unexpected but strongly complimented the dish. Puffy tacos, a San Antonio tradition, are done nicely here - perfectly puffy taco shells, loaded with hearty picadillo filling, arrived hot and upright on a stainless steel taco stand that kept everything from spilling out. Plenty of parking in their private lot (overflow for on a side gravel piece too-good for big trucks!) tried the tortilla soup and a chalupa on the side. The rest of the party had different plates. On Friday 12/26, we went to El Chaparral. Sat in the bar. Chips and salsa were promptly served and Pablo took our drink order. Pablo brought us our drinks and then ignored us for more than 15 minutes. we sat there with menus closed waiting. We became upset as we watched Pablo take the orders of other guests who were seated after us! when those guests' food arrived ( this restaurant gets food out fast) we asked to speak to a manager. This kind a sloppy looking lady appears and rudely told us, "you have your drinks; you should have waived him down!" we paid for our drinks and left hungry. read more

Let's get the basics out of the way: the ambiance was stellar, the food phenomenal, and the drinks cold and delicious. Now I want to talk about service. Absolutely unparalleled. In what can only be described as a momentary spot of insanity my husband and I decided to take our two children (3 and 18 months) out for dinner at 7pm (we called ahead to make sure there wasn't a wait) and from the moment we entered the restaurant we received some of the BEST care I think I've ever had. Our main waitress, Julie, I think was an actual angel. She was patient, kind, caring, and attentive. When she offered a spare plate for our 18 month old she brought a regular plate and a plastic to go cup (which we GRATEFULLY accepted). She even brought little balls or tortillas dough for the kids to play with completely unprompted. She never hesitated to offer a high five or listen patiently to my children's incoherent ramblings. Both my kids decided to flag down another waitress (I believe her name was Katelyn) who patiently knelt down and listened as my 3 year old described his age, his birthday party, and his favorite toy all without so much as batting an eye. Even if the food was ice cold and the drinks came with melted ice I would come back here for the service alone. Also worth mentioning is the fantastic playground and lovely patio. Have been dining at the Helotes location for 30 years+. Have family in Helotes. We had dinner for 8 people and we seated on time at a round table. Reservation was $10 plus tax non-refundable - app to website to text to yelp was too complicated. Service was attentive and fast. I had a skirt steak med rare with onions, refritos and corn salad. Was excellent. The mariachi band was amazing but the acoustics made it VERY LOUD. Really couldn't converse about others dishes. One had Chile Rellanos and they were as good as the other restaurant. I understand you cannot make people seated there leave, but perhaps those tables should not be seated closer than two hours prior to the next reservation. Bit that $10 is a huge deal - but I hate having to pay for a reservation anyway, and I believe I should get a refund as I did not receive what I paid for. There were plenty of open tables so we would not have had to pay to be seated right away regardless. Additionally, my enchilada was so hard, greasy and had so little filling or chili con carne topping that it was pretty much a fried/stale tortilla covered with greasy cheese. I sent it back and our waitress was great about that, but I didn't get my replacement until everyone else was done with dinner. Very disappointing evening! read more

Bad To-go experience! We ordered two plates to-go. One was supposed to come with guacamole, it was not with the order when we got home. In both meals, the cheese in the enchiladas was not even melted, needless to say, they were cold. We live close by, so it wasn't the commute. We did not get any chips, salsa or tortillas. When I called and talked to the manager about this, he apologized for leaving out the guacamole and said they do not give chips and salsa and tortillas with to go orders unless requested. There was no way to request them online, which was the only way to order to go. I could have ordered them and paid for them which would not make sense to me since you can sit in the restaurant and eat all the chips and salsa and tortillas you want without being charged for them. There are too many good and accommodating Mexican restaurants in the area and I will definitely go elsewhere next time. Also, when we picked up the order, we never saw an employee. Cold tasteless food. I don't know what's happened to Mexican restaurants but this is another example of mediocre at best. The carne asada looks and tastes like it came out of a can. The rice has no flavor and I know there has to be a 55 gallon drum of refried beens in the kitchen. This was my third time here and they've struck out as far as I'm concerned. Not only the food is bad, the service is awful. we want this past Sunday for a birthday party that was reserved beforehand and the host had to pay in advance. when we arrived they said there was not a reservation and the whole time everyone was angry with all the guests. one of the guests, had an accident and injured the leg with one of the chairs, I mentioned it to the managers and no one did anything, we have photos of that too. the only 2 servers that helped were Preston and Kaitlin. The manager in the photo, was super rude with everyone! Now they block me from instagram because they know this was wrong and instead of doing something right, they want to pretend this didn't happen. To begin, Rene (our server) was INCREDIBLE. She is amazing and a hard worker. It was a pleasure to have her taking care of us. The Chips and Salsa were delicious, and our orders were perfect, delicious, and hot. The decor is very rustic with nice sturdy tables and chairs.
