We liked the ideas the architect offered but not the cost as quoted by the contractor the architect referred us to. So we decided to contract our own specialists - act as our own general contractor. SD Paverscapes was one of three paver contractors we contacted. Luis was quick to respond and listened to our ideas. He provided us with a plan we loved and a price we could handle. The installation crew was absolutely first rate. It was a pleasure to watch craftsmen apply their skills! The result is fabulous! Honestly, it turned out better than we had imagined! As with ALL contractors, you - as the client - need to always be communicating with Luis. We made slight modifications to our original plan as the work progressed, but they all were fine because we were in constant dialog with Luis.

The job required some precariously climbing as it was at least 2 stories up a hill, and certainly austere working conditions given the status of the job site, but Mike and friends worked with it and got the job done within 3 days of quoting it. 2. Mike also poured me a slab to extend the size of my driveway, it was smooth, clean, level and matched the original driveway perfectly, all at a fair price. That said, the job would have gone quicker if they had worked more than just a few hours each day. My problem was with the company itself. I hired them because of the generally good posted reviews. Most of the reviews mentioned that Mr. Klein himself was involved with doing and/or supervising the work being done. Not so in my case. The initial response from Yelp after I requested a quote I assume was from Mr. Klein. I was told he was unable to come out for the quote but he was sending someone named Luis, who did come out and work up a quote. He and Abel were the ones that actually did the work, with a third person at my house for just a couple of hours one day. At first Luis told me that Mr. Klein would come around a couple of times to check on things during the one week that they were here. Toward the end of the job I specifically asked about Mr. Klein since I had neither seen nor communicated with him after my quote request. When I asked Luis if my job had been subcontracted to him, he said that it had, and that Mr. Klein would in fact not be coming to our house at all. The fact is that I used this company based upon reviews of the work done for others in which Mr. Klein was usually directly involved. This lack of transparency is not OK. If Mr. Klein was not going to be involved in at least occasional on site supervision of the work, I should have been told that this job would be subcontracted out before I agreed to hire this company. Even if Luis and Abel work for this company on a regular basis, I feel that I should have been told up front that Mr. Klein was not going to be involved. It's just a business transparency thing from my perspective.

The city requires a lot of paperwork for sidewalk repair, and I wanted to find a contractor who could handle that for me. After I requested a quote, Ronnie called me to explain the process of working with the city, and I was convinced that this would go smoothly. Rose Concrete handled all of the paperwork electronically, copying me on every email to the city. As soon as we had Notice to Proceed, the crew was onsite, and they got the work done in one day (plus a couple of days for the concrete to dry). The new sidewalk looks great, and it's perfectly aligned with the surrounding sidewalk and parkway. My parkway is paved with bricks, and the crew did a great job of putting that back together. We recently hired Mendenhall Concrete to replace our driveway, widen it by 6 feet, install a new…read moreL-shaped front walkway, replace and widen the side walkway to our garage, and redesign the front entry by eliminating a crumbling brick step and incorporating it into the new walkway. I can honestly say this was the best experience I've ever had with a home improvement contractor. From start to finish, Mike Stratton and his team were outstanding. Mike is friendly, responsive, knowledgeable, and clearly takes pride in his work. He was flexible throughout the project as I made a few design changes along the way, and he was always willing to discuss options and offer thoughtful recommendations. What really impressed me was that many of Mike's best ideas didn't increase the cost of the project. He suggested installing a sleeve under the new driveway so I could easily run irrigation or electrical lines to the other side in the future, something I hadn't even thought about before he mentioned it and will almost certainly make use of. He also recommended embedding a drainage pipe beneath one area of the concrete so that, if drainage ever became an issue, it would already be in place and could easily be tied into. He also recommended removing the old porch step to create a seamless, modern transition to the front entry. As we discussed different layout ideas, including curves versus straight runs, he made it clear that the cost would be the same regardless of which design I chose, allowing me to focus on what looked best rather than what cost more. The workmanship was exceptional. The crew was professional, friendly, and obviously very experienced. You could tell these are craftsmen who have been doing this for a long time. They worked efficiently, never seemed rushed, and paid attention to the details. Mike stopped by every day, often multiple times, to check on progress, answer questions, and make sure everything met his standards. The project stayed on schedule from beginning to end, with each phase flowing smoothly into the next. They also went above and beyond at the finish by repairing stucco that had been disturbed during construction, rehanging my gate, and even patching some older stucco adjacent to the project that wasn't really part of the job. The finished driveway and walkways look fantastic and have completely transformed the curb appeal of our home. Just as importantly, the work looks incredibly solid. Even the walkways were built with the same attention to durability as the driveway. Nothing about the project felt like corners were being cut. The price was also very fair.
