That said, the job would have gone quicker if they had worked more than just a few hours each day. My problem was with the company itself. I hired them because of the generally good posted reviews. Most of the reviews mentioned that Mr. Klein himself was involved with doing and/or supervising the work being done. Not so in my case. The initial response from Yelp after I requested a quote I assume was from Mr. Klein. I was told he was unable to come out for the quote but he was sending someone named Luis, who did come out and work up a quote. He and Abel were the ones that actually did the work, with a third person at my house for just a couple of hours one day. At first Luis told me that Mr. Klein would come around a couple of times to check on things during the one week that they were here. Toward the end of the job I specifically asked about Mr. Klein since I had neither seen nor communicated with him after my quote request. When I asked Luis if my job had been subcontracted to him, he said that it had, and that Mr. Klein would in fact not be coming to our house at all. The fact is that I used this company based upon reviews of the work done for others in which Mr. Klein was usually directly involved. This lack of transparency is not OK. If Mr. Klein was not going to be involved in at least occasional on site supervision of the work, I should have been told that this job would be subcontracted out before I agreed to hire this company. Even if Luis and Abel work for this company on a regular basis, I feel that I should have been told up front that Mr. Klein was not going to be involved. It's just a business transparency thing from my perspective.

From the first meeting, I could tell Steve was an unconventional kind of contractor and was willing to work WITH me to get the exact results I wanted. We spend at least an hour in person reviewing the project, then several rounds of phone call/emails back and forth to hammer out the details and price. Compared to my other bids for the exact same work, Steve's bid was exceptionally detailed (I kid you not, down to the nuts and bolts required) and was SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper--so much so that I hired him on the spot when I got his final reworked bid. I am a pretty particular person (some might say a micro-manager), and I had a very specific vision for how I wanted the fence to be built and look. Steve (and his employees Chris & Patrick) were completely receptive to my input and turned the whole project into a collaborative effort in figuring out how to solve some of the more unique issues that arose during the construction. For me and my personality, that worked out perfectly. I am sure other contractors would have totally blown their lid dealing with me onsite everyday asking questions and talking, but Steve's guys took it in stride and the added collaboration really worked out for the benefit of the final result. The final fence built is so amazing people literally stop as they drive by and shout to ask who did the fence for me. I have even had SEVERAL people knock on my front door and ask for the contractor who built the fence. Part of that is down to my killer modern fence design (Steve know's I am right on that!), but most of it falls down to Steve's excellent execution of my vision. Due to the complexity of the project, Steve estimated 3-4 weeks, and they landed a little early at 3 weeks despite a few mix-ups and change orders. As the project was wrapping up, I was really looking forward to hiring Steve to do more work on other landscaping projects, but sadly, Steve told me he was moving home to be closer to family and this was his last project! I would without a doubt hire Steve and his team again for my future landscaping needs if he ever returns to San Diego.

After seeing an ad on Instagram, I decided to reach out to New Age Design & Build for a quote, along with a few other companies. Their quote was very competitive, and they were able to start the project quickly, which was important to us because we wanted to enjoy the pool during the summer. From start to finish, the entire project took only 10 days. Yotam was our project manager, and he did an excellent job keeping us informed throughout the process. He checked in with me daily to explain what work was being done, answer questions, and offer suggestions for design improvements and additional repairs. We ended up taking several of his recommendations and are very happy with the results. Overall, we were extremely satisfied with the quality of work, communication, and how efficiently the project was completed. The only concern I had was with some exposed rebar in the hot tub that, in my opinion, should have been replaced rather than patched over. NADB assured me that this would not cause any issues and explained that this approach helped keep costs down. While I was initially hesitant, I appreciated their transparency and honesty. I can honestly say this was the best experience I've ever had with a home improvement contractor. From start to finish, Mike Stratton and his team were outstanding. Mike is friendly, responsive, knowledgeable, and clearly takes pride in his work. He was flexible throughout the project as I made a few design changes along the way, and he was always willing to discuss options and offer thoughtful recommendations. What really impressed me was that many of Mike's best ideas didn't increase the cost of the project. He suggested installing a sleeve under the new driveway so I could easily run irrigation or electrical lines to the other side in the future, something I hadn't even thought about before he mentioned it and will almost certainly make use of. He also recommended embedding a drainage pipe beneath one area of the concrete so that, if drainage ever became an issue, it would already be in place and could easily be tied into. He also recommended removing the old porch step to create a seamless, modern transition to the front entry. As we discussed different layout ideas, including curves versus straight runs, he made it clear that the cost would be the same regardless of which design I chose, allowing me to focus on what looked best rather than what cost more. The workmanship was exceptional. The crew was professional, friendly, and obviously very experienced. You could tell these are craftsmen who have been doing this for a long time. They worked efficiently, never seemed rushed, and paid attention to the details. Mike stopped by every day, often multiple times, to check on progress, answer questions, and make sure everything met his standards. The project stayed on schedule from beginning to end, with each phase flowing smoothly into the next. They also went above and beyond at the finish by repairing stucco that had been disturbed during construction, rehanging my gate, and even patching some older stucco adjacent to the project that wasn't really part of the job. The finished driveway and walkways look fantastic and have completely transformed the curb appeal of our home. Just as importantly, the work looks incredibly solid. Even the walkways were built with the same attention to durability as the driveway. Nothing about the project felt like corners were being cut. The price was also very fair. In fact, another contractor I'm working with on a separate project, someone who frequently works alongside concrete companies, told me that the price I paid was very reasonable for the scope of work being performed. I recommend Mendenhall Concrete without hesitation. When I'm ready to tackle the backyard, they'll be my first call.

The main issue was that we would agree on a scope of work and price, but after the job started, he would later complain about the price or try to change the terms. On one project, he initially offered a discount if I paid cash, but about a week later said he could no longer honor that arrangement. I agreed to pay the full amount because he is also my neighbor across the street and I wanted to keep things friendly. I also asked him to repair damaged stucco under my patio doors, and he agreed to include that work. While I was traveling, he sent me a bill for the full amount, and I paid assuming the agreed work had been completed. When I returned, I found that the stucco repair had not been done. I asked him again to fix it. He sent a long message complaining about the price and scope of the work, apologized, and said he would fix it -- but he never did. After dealing with repeated complaints, uncertainty around agreed pricing, and unfinished promised work, I gave up. I would not hire him again. In my opinion, there was too much inconsistency and stress for work that should have been handled clearly and professionally.
