I have been dreaming of going back to Copenhagen just for the delectable bowl of Ramen here. The…read morespicy miso ramen here is quite possibly the best ramen I have had in my life ! They have a vegetarian and meat version of it and both variations are delicious. The broth is rich and packs a punch and noodles cooked al dante ensuring they retain their texture instead of turning soggy. Soft boiled egg was just as we expected it to be. We got a refreshing beer to accompany our ramen. Note that the spicy ramen is indeed SPICY, I went with a level 3 and had to take a couple breaks to make it through the bowl. The place itself has a fun interior. Service was friendly. I am so glad we decided to bike all the way to the Norrebro district for a meal here, it took us about 20 mins from our hotel and eating a slurpy soupy bowl of noodles post that on a chilly night was such an experience.

Unfortunately, we have been to Ramen to Biiru for the last time. After 8 years as neighbours and…read moreregulars (monthly and sometimes weekly), and most recently prior to today 9 days ago, we must end this toxic relationship with the Mikkeller owners. We have stuck by this restaurant through several misses, portion reductions, price increases, and multiple recipe changes (mostly for the worse - fx when they changed the Spicy Goma from pak choi to cabbage and later to an entirely bland, white broth - at least the broth has changed back to its original now but you still pay more for a smaller portion and significantly cheaper produce). But this August and today especially will not be tolerated: 9 days ago, much to our surprise, the free water that has ALWAYS been out at Ramen to Biiru was removed to impose plastic bottled own-brand water (how effin stupid, stop commodifying natural resources). Hot tip: in Denmark, restaurants are not allowed to deny you tap water. Ask for a glass of tap water and you don't have to buy into this stupid capitalistic hellscape. Today, we place our order and hand the waitress our neighbour discount card and stamp card - only for her to point at a freshly printed and framed A4 sign to her left declaring that pr August 1st, these cards are no longer accepted. Of course, this comes as another great surprise seeing as we were there just over a week ago - still very much August - and our cards were accepted just fine. Today as well, we had a free ramen to enjoy - well, no we didn't. When the first of our ramens came, they were cold and the waiter had his whole thumb in my ramen as he served it. Disgusting. The last two ramens (we were 5 together) came over 20 minutes after the other three, and by then the rest of us were obviously done eating. Such poor priorities. The staff is doing what they can, but unfortunately the Mikkeller owners are wet for profit and profit only. In the last year, the management has made extremely poor choices - surely benefiting their pockets in the short run, but guaranteed to hush all their regular and loyal customers far away. Luckily, there are many new ramen places in town and none of them include Mikkeller. Choose a different restaurant.

I don't live in Kopenhagen, last and this year, I spend only a couple of days in Kopenhagen, but both times, I had a bowl of tonkotsu, and it's very hard for my, to get only one bowl, but Kopenhagen has at least three more very good ramen joints, so I had to be very strong. But this tonkotsu is a dish I long for, when I'm back here in Hamburg. Sugoi oishii!

Very good vegan ramen (130 DK), about on par with Ramen to Biiru and a step above Mr Ramen. We both…read moreordered the vegan ramen for lunch one day, plus a side of veggie spring rolls (45 DKK), which came with 5 pieces. All the food came at once. The spring rolls were extremely oily, somewhat chewy, but not particularlt satisfying, with a mostly green cabbage filling. 3/5 The ramen broth was lightly creamy, with good depth and complexity, not too rich or spicy. The noodles were well-cooked and plentiful. Toppings-wise, you get kimchi, shredded beets, shredded carrots, corn, two pieces of soft tofu, bean sprouts, and green onions. That's the 3rd CPH ramen place I've been that include kimchi as a topping, and I don't think it works, as it creates too much acidity. Anyway, good stuff overall. We asked for tap water to drink and they charged us 30 DKK (assholes -- such a stupid thing that many places here do), so bring your own if you want to avoid wasting money on water. Overall, a good spot for vegan ramen in Vesterbro.

[Note: I wrote this review at the time not knowing about the recent controversy regarding…read moreallegations of a toxic work environment stemming from gender-based harassment to indifference to quality control and safety protocols. I apologize for my ignorance and oversight. While I had a great time at this bar and I like Mikkeller's beers in general, I cannot in good conscience go to any Mikkeller bar until I read reports that working environment have significantly improved. The review and rating will still remain because I don't want to discredit the bartenders who still need to make a living]. While everyone knows me nowadays as a wino, I still appreciate beer in that beer will be my go-to alcoholic beverage in countries that have a strong beer culture. In Copenhagen the beer culture can be summed up by two beer brands, each with a different philosophy. - Carlsberg, one of the Big 4 beer production companies. They revolutionized the beer production scene by 1) isolating and marketing the yeast that is specific to lager fermentation and 2) creation and standardization of the pH scale. In the case of beer brewing it is used to measure the acidity of the water (remember, water is normally neutral pH). - Mikkeller, one of the pioneers of the "contract brewing" concept - collaborate with other breweries to produce your beer. What started out as a passion project collaboration between a schoolteacher and his friend ended up becoming the face of the craft beer movement in Copenhagen. What catapulted Mikkeller to international fame was their Beer Geek Breakfast, which took top rating at ratebeer and currently has a 4+ average on beeradvocate. Eventually the original partner left to pursue other projects, the sole owner's passion now became his full time job and he finally had to create his own brewery (with the first one being in SD, CA, USA of all places for American-style IPAs). Although it is signature Mikkeller to collaborate with other businesses for food/beer pairings (Ramen to Biiru, Warpigs), there are only a few outposts of Mikkeller bars. The OG Mikkeller bar is this one located in Vesterbro. Vesterbro has had a bad rap in the past but now has evolved into one of the more hip neighborhoods of Copenhagen. Its close proximity to the train station (and additionally, my hotel) meant that this ended up being a perfect bar for a nightcap drink. I ended up liking it so much that I came back again on my last night in the city. The Danish ethos of "hygge" is in full force here - it's as hyggelig as it gets. Entrance is kinda tucked away somewhere between the train station and the Meatpacking District. From the down-to-earth staff to the patrons I talked to it was the perfect place to just wind down and relax over a glass of beer. Special mention to Hannah, Becs and Christian for being awesome. As a contrast I haven't seen an equivalent feeling in any beer bar back home - and this is considering SD is one of the craft beer meccas in the US! As a rule, 20 brews on tap. 19 are beer and there's always a non-beer option. There's always Mikkeller brews plus a few non-Mikkeller options. Beer styles are primarily IPAs, lambics/sours (focus on spontaneous fermentation) and porters/stouts. Two sizes available for most beers, the more rare options only have a small size. Here are the beers I had over the course of 2 days. Most important to note that a small 20cl glass is around ~30-35DKK/~$5USD and a standard beer pint is double that price. Sticker shock isn't so bad here because SD prices are just about equal. For current beers on tap check out their untapped page (https://untappd.com/v/mikkeller-viktoriagade/3124) - Scour Scandinavia Spontanseabuckthorn (Mikkeller) - typical sour - Crackle (Gamma Brewing Company) - strong smoky notes here; thinking bacon. - Kaffestout (Mikkeller) - Export India Porter (The Kernel) - excellent nightcap
