The facility is very clean, with well-maintained restrooms and vending machines stocked with snacks and drinks. The staff is always kind, welcoming, and respectful. Overall, it's a great place to play, whether you're just starting out or looking for more competitive games.

And the best part at least for badminton is that it is free. Well now you have to pay for parking as of January 5th, 2026, but once inside badminton is free, you just have to sign up. The table tennis, and volleyball, are part of clubs where I believe you have to be a member (San Diego table tennis club). This is just a great place for people to meet outside, as they have a lovely park with a fountain and nice walkways. It's a hidden gem for a recreation center. Get there early as the place fills up. If you are going for badminton you have to have your whole party there before you can sign up. The only not so great part was the introduction of paid parking for balboa park in general. But you know what we had it free since 1915 or something, so not horrible. Besides the proceeds from the parking fees will go to making balboa park even better, I hope.

The staff member in charge who was using the microphone was very kind and helpful. However, the two employees distributing skates came across as rude and unapproachable. I understand that working with large groups of kids can be frustrating, but their attitude was noticeable. At one point, I even stepped in to help distribute skates because the situation felt a bit overwhelming due to their frustration. Overall, the experience was okay, but improved customer service would make a big difference.

Over at North City, parking is an issue. This gym definitely had more people and most of the bouldering happens on the first floor in a designated area. At 9:30am, part of the bouldering section was closed off for cleaning and a section of it was down as a new route needed to be set. It felt a bit cramped to boulder here and by 10:30am, a bunch of people showed up and that's when it really felt like packed sardines in here. Since I already had a good hour in here, I started to wrap up bouldering and headed out. Women's locker room on the first floor, clean and well stocked. Lockers available for use. Staff are really nice here and checked in on my experience when I left. Staff told me this location tends to be the busier one as it is central to everything, so I appreciated that tip. Overall, still a great climbing gym, I'd definitely come back!

There's lights, bleachers, and the baseball/soccer field is pretty much the focal point of the rec center. Whenever my team plays here it somehow feels like there are people are there to watch us...even if there aren't. Sure, the percentages of me turning an ankle are waaay higher than I'd like, but it's a small price to pay for that nostalgic feeling of my high school sports days.

Main entrance is off So. 40th st. near Alpha St. This leads to Recreation Building, children's playground, inner parking lot. Some picnic table nearby lot too. Handicap port-o-potty in parking lot. Be aware of one lane driveway. There is also a drive-in entrance off end of Newton St. at bottom of hill. Here there is a senior rec. building with shuffle board court. Next to it is restrooms for the two large baseball diamonds with bleachers. They have a snack stand also. Inside the Recreation Center you'll find game room (foosball & pingpong, snack machines, weight room, restrooms & locker room, desk for checking out equipment. Nice staff. There is a great hillside with some shade trees for picnic with great views over the city of San Diego. Walk in entrances include Newton St. up the hill a bit and Alpha St. at the top of the hillside, that exits toward the Market and Shopping center. Freeway (805) exit/entrance ramps leaves from shopping center on 43rd St. The time I visited there were tens of families watch kids play baseball, and a few setting up tents and blow-up play slides/bouncy houses to have family/community gatherings. Nice amount of kids/families playing at playground when not picnicing. Hopefully soon the City will consider using the adjacent lot (Alpha St.)to the east up on the hill & vacant one across the street on So. 40th for community garden spaces. Then people can eat REALLY FRESH vegi.s & fruits at their park events. Now go and Enjoy!
