I hesitate to give this place anything less than 5 stars for fear of dissuading a potential donor when there is ALWAYS a critical need for blood in our community, so let me first explain why I knocked a star off but simultaneously feel 100% confident in this blood center's staff and impact and would recommend that you make an appointment today.
Just yesterday I donated a double unit of platelets through a process called aphaeresis which normally takes me about 2.5 hours (my veins begrudgingly relinquish their juice but other people are in and out much faster). The check in process was a breeze; the staff that did my hemoglobin/vitals check and questionnaire was great and was actually being monitored by a supervisor for her annual evaluation that is part of their policy to ensure competency.
*Star deduction note* Once I move to the donation bed, I had a different staff person who set up the machine and got the needle going and got me settled into a lengthy donation. Everyone is entitled to a bad day at work every once in a while and maybe that's what happened here but I was taken aback by the lack of bedside manner I experienced. Also, I don't want to smell cigarette smoke on the lab coat/hands/person during my donation-- I just don't like that in a health clinic-ish environment.
Everything else was 5 stars: I watched Netflix, sat with heating pads and puffy blankets, got to eat delicious cookies and popcorn and coffee afterward. Every other staff person I engaged with was friendly, and I always felt like I was in skilled hands during the donation. Which is important when there's a needle in your arm for over 2 hours!
I'm a fan of memorial and will continue to donate here regularly. No, they don't offer the nice incentives to come in and donate that Red Cross does but that's not why I do it. I come to memorial because I know my donation stays local and serves my community. That's important to me. read more
