We came here on a Thursday night hungry for some delicious chicken we've been hearing about. Just do a GPS navigation from Yelp and it'll get you there. It's located in the basement of the Genesis Enterprise center, follow the restaurant signs and it'll get you to the parking lot. We ordered the 2 pc White Meat Chicken Special $8 (Wednesday night special now served as a daily special) with green beans and fried onions & potato, Thursday Baby Back Rib Special $7 with yams and Mac & Cheese, 2 corn muffins, Peach cobbler $3, and Banana Pudding $3. Melly's daughter graciously took our to go orders, and even gave us dessert samples to try. Very friendly service, as others said, it's like being in the kitchen of Melly's home. Our wait didn't seem long since we just chatted with Melly and her daughter. They have been catering for 7 years and have been in their current location for 3. For such a small establishment, they have more sides and dessert items than any chain I know! Melly's daughter informed us everything is homemade and made from scratch. And you can tell. The chicken had deep, complex flavors throughout the meat, not just in the breading. The green beans had a garlicky flavor and the fried onions and potato were amazing! The ribs had the perfect tang to the sauce, and the meat was tender. The yams were like a dessert themselves - sweet! The Mac & Cheese had the right ratio of noodles and cheese, not smothered, but not skimpy either. The corn muffins were so soft, they crumbled to our forks! A crumbly, honey delight! Save some room for the encore that is dessert! Get the peach cobbler when available, and heat it up - it's the best! The banana budding was equally remarkable. For the price of these morsels, skip KFC and come straight to Melly Mell's!

Make sure you leave room for dessert. This strawberry cake came straight from the oven to our table.

Come for the fried chicken, but stay for the dessert! Melly Mel's may be hard to find, but it's soooooo worth the effort. Once you locate the poorly marked entrance and descend a long flight of stairs covered with threadworm grey carpet, the welcoming aromas of the kitchen will guide you the rest of the way. Despite the unassuming exterior, the interior of the basement restaurant is spacious, clean and well lighted. The eclectic décor and mismatched tables and chairs create a homey vibe for those who venture in. The highlight of any trip to Melly Mel's is when owner / chef Carmell "Mell" Jackson pays a visit to your table. Even if you're in the sourest of moods when you enter the restaurants, your conversation with the effervescent Mell will brighten your day. What you need to know: * The fried chicken is the star attraction at Melly Mels. The meat is juicy and far more delectable than any $7 plate of chicken has any right to be. The coating is has a wonderful crunch, not greasy at all. Best of all, it is served piping hot - there are no heat lamps at Melly Mel's - everything is made to order. With a little hot sauce sprinkled on top, eating this fried chicken was a near life-altering event... * There is an extensive breakfast menu. It has the usual fare (eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, etc.) as well as chicken and waffles. * The lunch deals are a fantastic bargain. For $7, you get a generous main course, two sides and a drink. * The sides were hit or miss for me. I loved the cornbread muffin and the fried potatoes and onions. The black-eyed peas and rice & gravy not so much. The yams and the mac and cheese ordered by my dining companions looked promising. * If you are looking for a quick meal, this is not the place to go. Because of the made to order nature of the food and the volume of carry out orders, give yourself a good hour and a half for lunch. My last piece of advice: DO NOT LEAVE UNTIL YOU ORDER DESSERT. I love, love, love, love, love, love the desserts at Melly Mells. On my first visit, I had the strawberry cake with a smooth cream cheese frosting. My second visit featured a lemon pound cake. Both were out of the oven fresh and both were Oh.So.Delicious. 'nuf said. Just get the dessert, trust me.

    Yup, this is the entrance!

Wedding attendees are still raving about the food. The most frequent comments are that "it was absolutely the best wedding food" they have ever had, as well as, "it came hot". The service staff was polite and efficient. The day got away from us, so they adjusted to meet our needs. I never remember what I ate at most weddings. These guests will remember for years. Also, we had several guests with severe allergies and some with gluten issues. All of our needs were met and never questioned. Their menu is designed for GF/DF. But we also needed several plated dinners due to our more extremely allergic guests. We felt that our concerns were heard and taken seriously. Thank you!!! We also used the bar tending staff. They were excellent as well. We had three signature drinks and beer, wine and champagne. There was minimal waiting for drinks, even during the cocktail hour. I highly recommend this company for any event.

A big thank you to the Upstairs Downstairs team for helping to make our day extra special. We look forward to recommending them to future couples getting married in the Madison area.

COMMUNICATION: I live out of state and thought it might be difficult to work remotely with a caterer, but Nicki made the whole experience easy and fun. I really felt like she took the time to make sure I was happy with everything and was always available to chat on the phone or quick to respond to my emails. GRAZING BOARDS + APPETIZERS: I was drawn to Twisted Radish by the photos on their website of their elaborate grazing boards (because appetizers are always one of my favorite parts of a wedding..), and it was so fun creating a delicious spread with Nicki's help. The end result was even better than I expected, she went out of her way to make sure everything was displayed beautifully and it all tasted amazing. DINNER: We did a plated dinner with three different main course options - Wedding Day Salmon, Herbed Tri Tip and Apple Cider Chicken. Each plate came with heirloom carrots with rosemary and orange, garlic broccoli with chili flakes, roasted fingerling potatoes, poached pear salad and sourdough dinner rolls. She even surprised us with butter boards for the rolls! Every dish tasted amazing, even better than I imagined. COFFEE AND DESSERT: Nicki set up a incredible coffee station complete with almond and oat milks in vintage carafes. I have a lot of coffee snobs in the family, and they all approved of the coffee. She also make us two homemade ice cream flavors (vanilla bean and blackberry) that were fantastic. STAFF: Everyone from Twisted Radish was so kind and extremely professional. You can tell they love what they do. I would 100% recommend Twisted Radish for any future events needing delicious and beautiful food. I feel extremely lucky they were available because I feel like we got the very best of the best!

When planning my wedding, I was looking for a caterer who shared my food values. I wanted someone who would present my guests with some delicious local food; someone who would be low-key and easy to work with. UFC seemed to be just what I was looking for. But then, I should have known it wouldn't be so easy. First, I had to email approximately 15 times before I was able to set up a meeting with them. Since I live in San Francisco, I had a window of about a week to meet with them. Needless to say, they weren't very interested in accommodating me. Then, the meeting. After the general unhelpfulness of our scheduling exchanges, my expectations were low, but wow! Now, I generally expect that when I meet with a caterer, I'll get to taste some of their food. Not so. I (sort of) understood, since they don't have a kitchen facility, per se. I reminded myself to keep an open mind. Most caterers will lead you through the initial meeting, getting a sense of what you're looking for, your budget, your style. Not this guy. What we got was... well, not much besides a lot of chef peacockery. Now, being from San Francisco, I'm used to food snobs. I am fluent in their language - they are my people. But UFC made me feel like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman - the scene when she is hysterically pulling wads of cash out of her purse, begging to be waited on in Beverly Hills. Surprise, surprise, they never called me back - another giant red flag - and I didn't pursue them either. I did send an email letting them know how disappointed I was, which (of course) was never replied to. I would caution anyone against working with these folks. Even though their mission and food seem to be top notch, their diva behavior is just too much. I only wish I could give zero stars.
