Why are there only 5 stars here? Am on vacation in Santa Fe and broke my crankset. Called up and explained that I was in a bind, was hoping to ride every day and now I am out of luck. Dropped it by and they had a new crankset and bottom bracket installed in no time. What GREAT service, definitely will be back as we spend a lot of time Santa Fe and they are such a great business. This is one of the best bicycle shops in the whole state... They can fix just about anything. I have a vintage racing bicycle not only did they help rebuild it but had excellent advice along the way. Also I have newer bicycles as well never any attitude just really good helpful service from all employees and the owner. The servicec department is second to none. Ok it has only taken me several months to write this review because I am that kind of person BUT here I am still fondly reminiscing the experience I had at this shop. My stupid rear tube had been going flat randomly every couple of days and despite changing the tube/taking it somewhere to get looked at etc. it was still effing being a brat. OPEN SCENE...me, downtown, running errands. Amy, my bike, being baller as ever dodging confused, slow-walking tourists, mouths agape, in the middle of the road...all is smooth...BAM! FLAT! I'm like well I will die before I WALK anywhere ever again BUT I know this place exists so here goes. I'm sick of this sh*t, onwards to MV. New tubes! New tires! Awesome dudes, no eLiTiSt CyCliSt nonsense, just a really chill environment with knowledgeable, helpful people getting it frikkin done, not charging 1 arm + 1 leg, & also being charming as heck! 10/10 would recommend. Came here to rent bikes for a few hours of mountain biking. This place gets 5 stars because: 1) They gave us a great suggestion for biking in an area with rolling hills (La Tierra Trails)--my wife hates trails with long steep climbs. The trailhead was about 3 miles from the store and the park had wonderful signage. 2) The bikes we rented (at $40 for 24 hours/bike) were great and reasonable for what we got(+$5 per helmet). 3) The attitudes of everyone who we interacted with at the store were great. And if you are staying anywhere near the main Plaza in Santa Fe the locaction is very convenient. read more

Two bikes were purchased for my sons from this place. They were birthday gifts from grandparents. We were on a ride and my oldest son (12) was riding and his bike pedal completely fell off. Luckily he was able to stop and get off the bike safely. No injuries thankfully. We had to walk the bike back home about 2miles. We loaded the bike and immediately took it back to Mellow Velo for repair where we were met with an angry, condescending, ass of an owner. No apology, no acceptance that they may have improperly assembled the bike, just a rude person bothered that this was a problem for us. I am surprised at all the praise given to this owner for this type of behavior we experienced. The bikes were not cheap so I definitely expect better customer service at this level. read more

For our honeymoon, my husband and I decided to go to Santa Fe NM. While there we knew we wanted to do something active and scenic so we decided to go for a bike ride along downtown Santa Fe but first we needed bikes. We found this little bike shop that had rental and decided to try it out. Once we got there the staff was very helpful and friendly. We felt comfortable because the guys really knew their stuff. They provided us with two really nice bikes for a very decent price and a map of our route. I even got a free souvenir out of our visit. I've rented bikes on vacation at various Mt bike destinations. Melo was by far the friendliest and had the most varied demo fleet, especially considering the size of the shop-- on the smaller side. David, Rossen, Jonah, thanks for your attentiveness. Owen setup my bike like a champ (Santa Cruz Bronson). I've never ridden a bike I would consider trading for my bike (carbon stumpy) at home. With the care and expertise with which it was setup, I immediately felt at home on it. The rail trail is great, they put me on a new carbon gravel bike, wildflowers and cacti blooming in late June it's a great ride. Bring extra water. If you can get someone to drop you at the top of Windsor, it's a fantastic downride. Not much technical, but enough to keep it interesting for intermediate riders. Or you can bike up the 4000 ft to Windsor, but I live at sea level so that didn't sound like fun for me. The Windsor south 8 is worth a look. read more

I do a lot of destination mountain bike trips and therefore deal with a ton of local shops. So I don't say this lightly: Mellow Vello rocks for rentals. Incredible selection of my favorite bikes, perfectly tuned. Owen set me up like I was buying the bike... tweaking every adjustment. They let me swap bikes in the middle of the multiple day rental so that I could really get the feel for what's out there. Great advice on trail selection and the price was very reasonable. They don't offer insurance, which I found slightly concerning but then they didn't charge me for some noticeable wear and tear. If you are renting or buying bikes in Santa Fe this is your place. Funny how some reviewers talk about amazing prices, are they talking about rentals? This is the kind of place that you walk in needing a $10 item and David (owner?) will attempt to sell you a $5k dollar bicycle. The guy completely overcharge me for an item, the return was excruciatingly painful since the owner is the only person that can basically do anything there. Then he charged me for return fees while crying "how about my time"? Too funny. I watched him try to sell a super high end bike to a elderly non-rider...his pitch, this way you won't need an entry level bike nor a second bike. Voila, you deserve a professional bike. A little scummy, would never buy from them again. Your experience may be different. Too bad, I liked the guy at the beginning. read more

Wanted a hybrid, but got a multipurpose mountain bike because they don't carry hybrids. After a few miles, I understood why. Even though I'd planned to stay on-road, I was seduced onto gravel and dirt trails that would have been nightmarish with any other bike. Bike was in great condition and well-tuned, the lock was easy to use, and everyone in the shop was as helpful and friendly as you could imagine. The map and suggestions were superhelpful, even though I completed all of the highlighted portions in just two hours, which was a bit short for what was expected to be a two-day rental. read more

My wife and I had an amazing experience rental mountain bikes from Mellow Velo. The entire staff was super friendly, knowledgeable, and professional! The equipment we rented was top of the line. They have an amazing line of high end demo bikes being offered at a reasonable price. Great place to demo $2,500+ equipment. They also offer city cruisers and all other levels of bikes. I rented bikes with my family today and was thoroughly impressed with the service! I called before I got there to reserve 4 bikes and they had them ready to go. I wish I could remember the guys name who helped us (he had very long hair) and was excellent in every way. He helped us map out the trails, set us up with fabulous new bikes, helmets and even locks so we could lock-up our bikes when we stopped for lunch. I was real concerned that they would not have a bike for my 10 year old but they had a perfect brand new one for him. These are the best, most high quality bikes I ever rented so we felt real safe with them. At the end of our ride, the owner came out to greet us and help us with the bikes. My family had a great experience and we would recommend this place to anyone! read more

Don't be afraid to go mountain biking in Santa Fe if you are an active person! It's fantastic! My husband and I like to mountain bike but never know what we'll find when we visit a new place. We walked in to Mellow Velo at 10 am wearing our running tights and tennis shoes and within an hour were riding on top of a hill on the outskirts of Santa Fe enjoying an incredible network of trails for every riding ability. Mellow Velo made the whole experience simple and comfortable. First, they asked us what type of experience we hoped to have. Then they gave us the bikes best suited for that type of experience. Finally, they directed us to the trails that we would enjoy most. We were able to ride 3 miles to the trailhead and spent a total of 3 hours with the bikes before returning them. Regarding the trails, don't be afraid to get off the bike and walk it up or down the sections that seem a bit tricky. When I wasn't sure about my ability, I didn't take chances. I just walked it. That strategy was the key to guaranteeing a fun afternoon. The staff at Mellow Velo know how to meet the needs of different types of riders, from the ultra-serious (just check out the high-end gear for sale) to the novice. And it was obvious that they wanted us to have a good experience. If we go back to Santa Fe again, I am 100% certain we'll be back in the store to rent bikes. read more

A review on renting a mountain bike with theses guys. They have grown a lot since my last visit 5 years ago. The new shop is awesome, the rental bikes are as well. Dillon took the extra time to make sure my Santa Cruz was set up to my personal liking and the bike rode like a bike I owned. We rode the Dale Ball trails. The trails were so well maintained and marked a map was not even necessary. I rent and ride mountain bikes all around the country and this was probably my best total package experience (great shop/bike/trails). I can't wait to come back next time I visit Santa Fe. took my bike over there and this has been on my mind for little while before i knew what Yelp was . Here it is I took my bike in to get the shifters replaced on a old 90's frame Lotus mountain bike . They said that they would have to order the part that it would take couple of days I said ok . Well the couple of days came close to week and half skirting on two weeks. When started calling has the part arived they said no it has not waitted couple days same ansrew , How Fucking hard is it to get a tracking number to track the order for the customer ? That is when i got fed up and took it to REI where there were compatant people that worked there . I got fucking sick of the incompatance at Mellow Velo . Yes i belive in supporting mom and pop stores but these guys are fucking Idiots, by the way there are far better mom and pa bike shops that this dump. read more

Renting a road bike here was one of the high points of my recent trip to New Mexico. There are some great rides out of Santa Fe; in just a mile or two you are out of town and, with low vegetation and houses, enjoying some tremendous views. I particularly enjoyed the rides to Eldorado and Rio en Medio. The climbs can be challenging--my computer registered sustained 11% grades--so it's good to have a nice road bike, in good condition, that fits. That's what I was able to rent from Mellow Velo, and I had a great time as a result. read more

Great service, attitude and equipment. They set me up with the maps and directions I needed for an amazing day of mountain bike riding on the Dale Ball, Borego and Winsor trails as well as a nice afternoon checking out the great neighborhoods of Santa Fe. Their prices are a little bit higher than others in town, but they give you a lot more ( new equipment, tool, tube, lock, pump, extra bottle clips, peddals you want) and it is worth the couple extra bucks. They are also local and really nice people. I will go back to Mellow Velo for a bike everytime I come to town! I very highly recommend this place. read more

We had an absolute blast on our bikes rented from Mellow Velo last Saturday. The staff was super helpful in ensuring our that our bikes were fitted correctly and we were appropriately geared up for our ride. They took the time to explain a map of the area and suggest routes for us to explore. Although part of the terrain was pretty technical, it was so much fun giving it a try and just getting out in the Santa Fe terrain. There was also a lot of in-town biking for us to do. Biking along Canyon Road was such a memorable experience. I can't recommend Mellow Velo enough! read more
