Before our 2:30p tour of Sintra's palace, we needed some sustenance to get us through that late appointment. Plant-based/vegan options in Sintra are very limited; but, we lucked-out in finding this modern vegan restaurant: Mela Canela ("Mel a Canela" translates to "Honey and Cinnamon"). It's a very modern, clean and well-lit space, with an exceptionally large outdoor space for alfresco eating on a fine day. The woman who was both our greeter and waitperson (an expat from Zimbabwe) -- naturally, I missed her name! -- was super-friendly and welcoming. We began with a couple of Sintra-brewed beers, and the hummus/olive/bread starter. After hearing the special of the day, we didn't need our arms twisted: Enchiladas was the main of the day! They arrived with a side of lime rice and small salad. All was really tasty (the enchiladas were a tad on the cool side), especially the lime rice, which was fluffy and light and actually had a fine flavor and texture. When all was said and done, we left satiated and energized for our palace tour. If we ever find ourselves in Sintra again, Mela Canela will be our go-to...! :D read more
